Starts tomorrow night on Sky Atlantic with a “fresh” faced Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant. It looks good and I love glamorous New York 😃

Oooh just had a thought re lawyer friend, if she is the other one HG had an affair with as suspected up thread then maybe she is giving the prosecution info as a way of revenge?

Annasgirl · 25/11/2020 12:40

@banivani

Those court room scenes were ridiculous. No judge would permit children to be present for those photos being shown. Alternatively what parents are so useless as to let children attend!

NK:s face more frozen this episode :( she found it hard to emote that final scene.

Oh, @banivani, were you inside my head while I watched this? I kept saying to DD, Nicole can no longer move her face. It looks so unreal. And I screamed out about the two boys being allowed in to the court and showing the photos with them there - do they not realise we all watch American courtroom dramas all the time, so we know the score Wink.
Annasgirl · 25/11/2020 12:51

DD and I watched episode 5 last night and our only conclusion is that NK's character is the oddest person we have ever come across on screen or in real life (going over to sleep with HG after the phone call and walking back across NY city in her pyjamas Confused). Donald Sutherland's character is equally strange - are rich New Yorkers really that weird or are we supposed to realise that Donald and Nicole are particularly weird.

I am completely addicted but I don't really care who did it as I would be happy enough for any of them to end up in prison - there was not one likeable character in the whole series, and yet it is compelling (I think that shows that the old adage that characters need to be "good at heart" or "relatable" to engender loyalty to a series is a load of BS.

banivani · 25/11/2020 12:53

You could almost reconstruct what order they've filmed the scenes in based on Nicole's face, it's sometimes very frozen sometimes not. She must have been tinkering with the botox.

They're such shitty shitty parents! I'm waiting for the conclusion to be that it was all a dream or something, she doesn't even seem like a psychologist, totally unaware of her husband's sociopathy (alleged not yet proven but come one) and she's def not centering her son!

Chemenger · 25/11/2020 13:22

Who takes their children to a murder trial? The whole thing is so odd that I am tending towards the entire plot being a psychotic fantasy in NK’s head because she murdered Elena and has lapsed into some sort of fugue state.

MadDoggoLady · 25/11/2020 13:35

@carolebaskinfedhimtothetigers I thought that about the other lawyer friend, she's a pretty pointless character other wise.

banivani · 25/11/2020 13:49

@Chemenger exactly!

JustDanceAddict · 25/11/2020 14:04

@Chemenger - yes!!

Chemenger · 25/11/2020 14:06

To be fair I see now that banivani said almost exactly the same thing before I did.

banivani · 25/11/2020 14:49

But I liked "psychotic fantasy" and "fugue state". More psychobabble than NK:s character has said in all five episodes Grin (what's the point of a psych character without psychobabble I ask you)

goingtosnow · 25/11/2020 21:39

Even a teenager would surely know to get rid of the hammer (river!) and not keep it in his violin box? No?
And how did he sneak out and go to kill Elena? Would NK not have heard? Or when he sneaked back in in bloody clothes supposedly?
If he turns out to be the killer then it's not very credible

RaraRachael · 25/11/2020 21:50

i thought the same about disposing of the hammer and clothes. I thought the hammer looked rather clean considering it had been used to beat her head to mush.
I think DS is very shady, although I loved the scene when he was telling the headmaster to basically fuck off. Maybe he helped Henry to dispose of his bloody clothes to frame HG as he doesn't like him.
Or the final episode will have NK all angst-ridden trying to decide whether to throw HG under the bus and keep quiet to protect her son, as revenge for his affairs. That will give plenty of scope for lots of emotional, expressive acting Hmm

Starting to feel sorry for NK. The first time she gets to eat something she ends up with some strange meat and melon concoction, then she’s getting face timed by grammar nazi granny and she can’t even open her mouth properly to scream..

GoldenGumballs · 25/11/2020 23:28

NK exhales and sighs every so much.

CheetasOnFajitas · 26/11/2020 12:41

I agree very weird to keep the hammer rather than dispose of it in the river or somewhere.

The identity of the other woman HG had an affair with has to be relevant I reckon. However it did look like he was about to tell his lawyer who it was, just before the camera cut away, so she should know and you would think would want to use it.

Blondie is a good shout- jealous.

Who was babysitting Henry on the night of the fundraiser/murder? Or was he old enough to be left home alone?

Re NK Botox, is it possible that she did it for the character ie Grace is so weird anyway that she might be just the type to overdo that sort of thing. Agree she is a crap psychologist.

I wonder what the weird grammar nazi thing was about- was it to make us dismiss HG’s Mum as nuts and possibly an unreliable narrator?
Why did NK, a psychologist, automatically believe that HG showed no grief or remorse rather than entertaining the idea that his parents were so unremittingly awful that they either didn’t see it, or he hid it?

CheetasOnFajitas · 26/11/2020 12:42

Pretty much everything about the trial was nonsense.

CheetasOnFajitas · 26/11/2020 13:42

I’m really enjoying it though!

goingtosnow · 26/11/2020 20:39

Going off on a tangent here but just seen a 2019 movie with Kristin Davis, she's 55 and you can see plenty of wrinkles (but she still looks good )and I instantly liked her more for that. NK is 53 and the face is just wrong , she's doing a Meg Ryan and ruining her career because she's starting to look so odd that's all that people will really talk about.
I find her face distracting (but i guess it might not be a bad thing in this case)

MadDoggoLady · 27/11/2020 11:15

Tbh i watch love actually religiously every year so I was really shocked by how much HG has aged! Still would though..

Clawdy · 27/11/2020 12:46

Guess it was 17 years ago though! I watch it every year too, it's one of the few things DD and I both agree on!

Whenwillow · 29/11/2020 15:36

I'm enjoying it. Just watched 5. My money is on grandad.

Crikeyblimey · 29/11/2020 15:44

Unless it was just shit ‘filler’ I think the scenes with NK counselling the cheating couple could be interesting. She was banging on about ‘did you secretly want to get caught?’ Hmmm.

Trying2Heal · 29/11/2020 15:52

I think NK did it!

As for NK's face has it been like this for a while now? I've not really seen her in anything or seen pics of her for many years. Her face looks like a less extreme version of Jocelyn Wildstein. Why has NK done this to herself? She looked lovely before?

Elena's husband is gorgeous and seems lovely. Interesting she'd choose to cheat on him with creepy looking old HG.
