Anyone else getting excited? The Diana trailer looks great. It's on Netflix on 15th November.

My biggest criticism of the actor playing Charles is his posture - he's terribly round shouldered whereas Charles does have a straight back. It spoils an otherwise good portrayal I think.

I noticed that too, I couldn't tell if it was some characterisation or not. In the early days he portrays him as being quite meek and unsure of himself but I was thinking surely as aristocracy his posture would be much better, I noticed GA did the same which I don't think Mrs Thatcher did until later years.

Smallsteps88 · 16/11/2020 12:58

thank you @Rinoachicken.

southeastdweller · 16/11/2020 13:07

@Smallsteps88

Im just watching the scene where Diana danced in the theatre for Charles birthday. Did that really happen like that? with that song? if so, how unbelievably hurtful of her to do that. poor Charles.
Why would it have been hurtful? She did it in good intention, a birthday present for him.
Smallsteps88 · 16/11/2020 13:18

the song! uptown girl- tired of her high class toys and presents from her uptown boys, looking for a downtown man. very clear message being sent to charles there, and considering the context of their marriage at that point? awful.

mrscampbellblackagain · 16/11/2020 13:20

I think the dance just high lighted the differences between them really. Charles was so vicious towards her in this series - was such a different Charles to the previous series.

mrscampbellblackagain · 16/11/2020 13:21

I thought it was more that Diana was the uptown girl to Wayne sleep and it was just a popular song at the time.

Rinoachicken · 16/11/2020 13:41

It made her firmly the centre of attention...on his birthday.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 16/11/2020 13:55

I'm still on the institution episode. How very upsetting to watch.

PrayingandHoping · 16/11/2020 14:23

Only watched episode 1 so far and very irritated by PP referring to Anne as a SJer. She wasn't.... she was an Eventer. Researcher fail 🙄

TheNighthawk · 16/11/2020 14:46

@Kittytheteapot
Yes, I noticed the mouse too and wondered the same!

I have only watched up to episode 5 as yet, but what I have seen so far is utter rubbish.

I particularly objected to the juxtaposition of the IRA propaganda and the Mountbatten assassination as a justification for the IRA's terrorism.

This was followed immediately by further propaganda portraying the RF (and presumably, by extension other aristocracy) as bloodthirsty murderers of wildlife.

JA's portrayal of Thatcher is ludicrous - mannered, exaggerated, hoarse voice - nothing like Thatcher's. She does have her walk perfectly, though. Also she gives Thatcher a constant cringing posture - totally unlike her IRL. This seems strange as I have always thought JA a very good actress.

The portrayal of Thatcher's handling of the Falklands crisis is inaccurate - she was not distracted by her son being missing as that occurred at least two months before. In reality her handling of the crisis was masterful.

I enjoyed series1-3, but I don't think they should have made this series.

It's incredibly intrusive and I don't think you can make television about very sensitive personal history (Charles and Diana) when the main protagonists (and their immediate family) are still alive, and most especially when it involves complete invention (some of it scurrilous).

Clearly you have to accept that artistic license will be taken, but the total traducing of almost every character and situation in the current series is beyond belief.

So far, I would say this series is extremely anti RF and anti British.

Lionoflove1 · 16/11/2020 14:56

@TheNighthawk This was followed immediately by further propaganda portraying the RF (and presumably, by extension other aristocracy) as bloodthirsty murderers of wildlife.

So the RF don’t hunt or shoot any wildlife??! You know well they do and are known to hunt stalk and kill innocent wild animals. So it’s pretty accurate then.

mrscampbellblackagain · 16/11/2020 15:30

I thought it was common knowledge that the creator/writer is a republican - it wasn't intended to be a RF PR exercise.

I didn't think I would enjoy this latest series but really did. Maybe because Charles and Dianna both put so much out there themselves via the media it didn't feel quite so intrusive. I felt sorry/feel sorry for Camilla as she alone has kept her mouth shut.

Did anyone hear Penny Junor and Anna Pasternak being interviewed on the today programme this morning? Was quite interesting.

Andylion · 16/11/2020 15:48

I am halfway through. I agree that GA's Thatcher comes across as a parody, but I also think EC's portrayal of Diana goes overboard with the shyness. She looked like an idiot during the engagement interview. Still dislike OC as the Queen, still love Tobias as PP.

IcedPurple · 16/11/2020 15:59

@Sabrina124

Claire Foy was fabulous as the Queen, although I thought she was pretty awful as Anne Boleyn in Wolf Hall.
I thought she was amazing. She captured Mantel's Anne perfectly. She came across as a prize bitch much of the time, yet somehow you couldn't help but feel desperately sorry for her too. Only criticism I'd have is that she was too pretty for Anne, who was not regarded as a great beauty, but that's TV for you.
veryordinary · 16/11/2020 15:59

I enjoyed it. Yes they dramatise and make up some bits but it is TV and i thought the actors and actresses did a fab job. They're not impressionists and it's not a documentary. It's entertaining enough, thought-provoking, it made me empathise with some characters and look up various historical events etc. Isn't that what art should be? Preferable to some nonsensical, historically ungrounded soap?

Bagelsandbrie · 16/11/2020 16:01

I am absolutely LOVING this season. I think the portrayal of Diana and Charles is amazing.

littlebitupset · 16/11/2020 16:20

I've loved it too. Finished it today. Still think Charles was a weak shit.

Are there six series? If so, that should take us well past Diana's death. Wonder what they intend to finish on. William getting married?

southeastdweller · 16/11/2020 16:22

Yes there's six planned. They start filming season five next summer which means we probably won't see it until 2022.

CaptainMyCaptain · 16/11/2020 16:22

The dance with Wayne Sleep actually took place a month after Charles' birthday.

ListenLinda · 16/11/2020 16:23

I was wondering when they would finish, as there is only one more season.

ListenLinda · 16/11/2020 16:27

Two*

Smallsteps88 · 16/11/2020 17:01

it made me empathise with some characters and look up various historical events etc.

it has probably taken me twice as long as everyone else to watch this show from series 1 as I keep pausing to google people and fall down a royal history rabbit hole! its fascinating.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 16/11/2020 17:05

There are lots of basic inaccuracies. Perhaps more this series then the 3 preceding.

CaptainMyCaptain · 16/11/2020 17:06

That's what I always do watching this or reading a historical novel like anything by Phillipa Gregory or Hilary Mantel. I looked up Michael Fagan earlier and his version of events is somewhat different but he may not be an entirely reliable witness (his heroin habit wasn't mentioned on TV). I'd say there was a bit of dramatic licence in the filming too.
Bagelsandbrie · 16/11/2020 17:11

I constantly google and you tube all the events and facts as I’m watching. I love the history of it all. It actually kind of makes me want to go back and study history again. It’s fascinating.
