CSIblonde- yes there was a serial killer in the USA, Jeffrey Dahmer. He also killed young men and kept their bodies in his home. Very similar to David Nilson.

Puppy72 · 15/09/2020 19:22

Can't wait for episode two tonight!!

dogsdinnerlady · 15/09/2020 19:57

It's more about the character(s) than the crimes I think, so not as gory as its subject might suggest. As for the 'ham sandwiches', I don't remember any suggestions of cannibalism. Is cannibalism a specific crime? He cut up the bodies to make disposal easier. Great acting from all the characters imo.

Puppy72 · 15/09/2020 21:09

Gripped!

GertrudeCB · 15/09/2020 21:33

Fantastic portrayal of a true evil .

The80sweregreat · 15/09/2020 21:37

It is gripping isn't it? I like Daniel Mays.
Tennant is brilliant too.

The80sweregreat · 15/09/2020 21:38

I read the book ' killing for company ' in the late 80s. It was chilling.

Toddlerteaplease · 15/09/2020 22:00

Presumably he pleaded not guilty so he got more attention by going to trial.

Puppy72 · 15/09/2020 22:00

Ohh.. He's thrown a big old spanner in the works hasn't he. Was literally gripped. Can't wait for the conclusion tomorrow

TheNavigator · 15/09/2020 22:07

I remember this at the time, but not the details. The smokey pubs take me back. The actor playing the detective is very good, you really sense his dismay and horror.

The80sweregreat · 15/09/2020 22:10

Daniel Mays is brilliant in this.
I've always been a fan of his .

BlackLetterDay · 15/09/2020 22:22

I have found it less than gripping so far. Much preferred appropriate adult about Fred West.

BlackLetterDay · 15/09/2020 22:25

As an aside has anyone read the book exquisite corpse? It's basically as if Dennis nilsen met Jeffrey dahmer, so graphic but I loved it Blush

Defenbaker · 15/09/2020 22:25

It's bizarre the way Nielson complained about being treated like a criminal in prison, saying that because he had not been convicted he should be treated as innocent until proven guilty. This from a man who had confessed to killing 15 people! Shock Of course everything about the murders is shocking, but this struck me as almost laughable.

It must have been maddening for the police and victims' families when he pleaded not guilty - talk about twisting the knife. He had nothing to gain but extra publicity, but chose to stretch things out and cause more suffering for those families, then seemed to have felt no remorse about anything he did. It's a shame we don't have the death penalty for cases like this. Instead he was fed and sheltered for 35 years at the tax payers' expense. Angry

dogsdinner my friend doesn't know and will never know about the sandwiches - he was an army chef who appeared to enjoy cooking for his colleagues. Now the food he brought in probably wasn't human remains. But it does make you feel funny when you consider he was being rid of human remains by cooking them, at the same time as bringing in food for colleagues. Even it was legitimately roast pork on that butty, was it roasted in a tin that previously contained a human body part? It's the uncertainty I think that haunts his former colleagues - he was seen as an unassuming chap apparently and nobody could believe he was what he was.

The80sweregreat · 16/09/2020 06:52

It is sad that murderers like this can stay in prison at tax payers expense for years.
I know all the arguments against the death penalty , but for people like him it doesn't make any sense. He admitted to those crimes. A controversial subject though I know.

HOkieCOkie · 16/09/2020 10:09

@The80sweregreat thing is even prisoners on death row can be on death row for years and years.

The80sweregreat · 16/09/2020 10:16

I know : the whole death penalty debate is so controversial! God forbid they ever allowed a referendum on that one!

I liked the detectives response to the press when asked what Nilsen was like

"unremarkable".

The80sweregreat · 16/09/2020 10:32

Of course : a referendum would be 80: 20 in favour!

HOkieCOkie · 16/09/2020 10:33

How come they can’t add charges? Shame for the other victims :(

MadameBlobby · 16/09/2020 10:36

His first victim was only 14. So he was a child murderer and a paedophile as if what else he did wasn’t bad enough.

Those poor boys and men ☹️ Some have never been identified.

What a wicked piece of shit.

The80sweregreat · 16/09/2020 10:38

I said to dh why wasn't his confessions all taped? Was it because he hadn't been convicted and just confessed?
I know it was a long time ago and maybe different back then?

ifonerememberstoturnonthelight · 16/09/2020 10:41

@The80sweregreat taping interviews only became standard in 1991.. he also wasn't read his rights because they didn't exist until the year after.
