I don't understand the motivations of the writer chap just now. I'm guessing he fancied writing a book about a serial killer so got in touch and just started meeting up with him? That seems a bit random.

And then why wouldn't the writer share what he knew with the police? They seemed quite combative with each other, surely they are sort of on the same side? I guess anything that came from the writer would just be hearsay and not evidence, but it might still help the police? I don't know.

I felt a bit sad about his dog. Surely they could have rehomed the dog?

The80sweregreat · 16/09/2020 10:45

Ah, I wondered why they didn't tape him! He confessed to 15 murders at first I believe.

Lottapianos · 16/09/2020 10:48

I watched episode 1 last night and thought it was great. It reminded me of Appropriate Adult in that it was really atmospheric, really well acted and just plain horrible (as it should be). Im not usually the biggest fan of David Tennant's acting but thought he was fab in this. The interview scenes were so creepy - I'm assuming hes enjoying playing with the police by withholding lots of details and pretending hes forgotten. Vile

Mrsjayy · 16/09/2020 10:48

It's so good isn't it I was watching astounded at his behaviour he said something to Brian about his moral compass that had me Shock .I read neilson had stopped his visits from Brian because he wrote a book about Jeffrey Darnam(sp) because he compared them.

The80sweregreat · 16/09/2020 11:00

As an ex policeman and in the army once too, he knew how to play cat and mouse.

MadameBlobby · 16/09/2020 11:08

@The80sweregreat

I said to dh why wasn't his confessions all taped? Was it because he hadn't been convicted and just confessed? I know it was a long time ago and maybe different back then?
Yes it’s all a bit casual isn’t it? The initial police interview in the senior officer’s office and the other ones in the prison canteen. And not even cuffed when he was arrested initially
The80sweregreat · 16/09/2020 11:13

Obviously tapes were brought in to stop this kind of thing from happening again as he goes on to contradict himself and is playing mind games with them all.

DGRossetti · 16/09/2020 11:21

@Handsoffisback

the80s I think you’d find a huge percentage of the population would be in favour of it. I do think that punishment certainly fits some crimes but of course it’s a complex issue.
Yes, but there would probably be a majority in favour of free money and making cancer illegal.

The wisdom of crowds is an oxymoron.

Tapes were bought in because the police fitted up the Guildford four and Birmingham six. And you can add those into your death penalty debate if you like.

@HirplesWithHaggis

Contrary to Puppy72, I think his accent is very mild. Nilsen was from the Broch ( Fraserburgh).

Yes, I know all the arguments against the death penalty ! A referendum on any of that would be a blood bath and you can't bring people back from the dead it's true!

It's barbaric and that's that. No argument will ever stop than and people who clamour for it are themselves barbarians.
southeastdweller · 16/09/2020 11:35

David Tennant is astonishing in this, completely disappearing into his role. The script seems pretty tame, not that I'm complaining, but the methods of murder and how he disposed of the bodies, and the necrophilia aspects of the story seem quite subdued here. I also wonder if tonight it will emerge that one of his victims was 14.

I feel for the families of his victims, especially the families of victims DN wasn't convicted of the murders for, and then there's the seven men DN murdered who were never identified.

A decision like that would never be put to the public.

I hope you don't have any money on that.

tornadoalley · 16/09/2020 13:11

I read killing for company, and this s an excellent series to accompany it.

Hearwego · 16/09/2020 13:41

Reference the death penalty, in my opinion people like The Moors Murderers, Ian Huntley, Robert Black, and Mark Bridget would fully deserve this. Oh and also Dennis Nilson...
Not sure what Masters interest was in Nilson but many infamous killers have books written about them and attract massive interest. So nothing really out of the ordinary with that.

Hearwego · 16/09/2020 13:49

Sorry Nilsen not Nilson...
Interestingly Nilsons original prison sentence was 25 years. Not even a whole life tariff..
Believe it or not, the UK is much tougher on sentencing now than it used to be, considering people were still being hanged in the 60s.
Sentences actually started getting tougher under New Labour.

I think Priti Patel stated that she believed in the death penalty for some murderers.
Although I think she just another Home Sec who’s all talk and no action. I think she’s rubbish.

DGRossetti · 16/09/2020 14:24

I think Priti Patel stated that she believed in the death penalty for some murderers.

Well yes. And her reasoned argument when challenged by Ian Hislop on QT about miscarriages of justice was "DNA innit ?". So if you don't mind, I'll not look to her for any nuanced advice.

Can you imagine her face as they pulled the lever (I bet she'd wangle a way to be there) with that smug grin ? It pretty much explodes any argument in favour.

MissFitton · 16/09/2020 14:26

I'm really enjoying this series, although I don't think 'enjoying' is the right word. The performances are brilliant.

WRT the death penalty I recommend a documentary called 'Fourteen Days in May' - It was recently on iplayer. I remember seeing it when it came out in the early nineties and it's the sort of thing that stays with you. The death penalty is barbaric.
