Who else is watching?? Hope its not too gory!!

OP posts:
VodselForDinner · 14/09/2020 22:39

Incidentally, Dennis Nilsen always reminds me of David Neilson, the actor who plays Roy Cropper in Coronation St.

Puppy72 · 14/09/2020 22:42

Lol Im glad you clocked that as well.. People Googling him are going to find images of him in Roy's rolls and think he's a serial killer!

Notverygrownup · 14/09/2020 22:43

@Elsiebear90 it was "Stone Cold" by Robert Swindells

CaledoniaCatalan · 14/09/2020 22:59

David Tennant is amazing in this.
I'd disagree with @Puppy72 about the accent. The Broch accent is far stronger than what David Tennant was actually playing it but to be fair for the purpose of network tv he would have had to tone it down

motorcyclenumptiness · 14/09/2020 23:03

Without frilly bonnets, how can we make sure all the viewers know that this is The Past?
The fact that a civil servant could afford to live in Muswell Hill would've sufficed

Puppy72 · 14/09/2020 23:03

I think it just sounded like slurring in some parts.. But overall it was genuine. He depicted him exceptionally well I have to say. Can't wait to see tomorrow's episode

MirandaMarple · 14/09/2020 23:06

Read the book about it years and years ago. Can't wait to watch.

MirandaMarple · 14/09/2020 23:07

@HirplesWithHaggis

"Killing for Company"?
That's was it!
Tomatoesneedtoripen · 14/09/2020 23:09

very good, what a good cast,
impressive show.

MirandaMarple · 14/09/2020 23:10

@VodselForDinner

I read the book when I was about 12 (parents censored none of my reading material, obviously!) and remember...

...spoiler...

Feeling somewhat sympathetic towards DN in parts, especially when it covered the abuse he experienced as a child. Also, there was a part that covered how he’d contemplated suicide so many times but didn’t as he had nobody then to care for his dog.

Will be interesting to see if I feel the same as a grown woman compared to how I felt as a 12 year old.

...end of spoiler...

I read it on family holiday after my Dad had finished with it, I was about 12 too!
Bunnybigears · 14/09/2020 23:10

Place marking for the chat after tomorrow's episode. Also I seemed to have missed the but where the lawyer disappeared, did he just say he was going to represent himself?

Puppy72 · 14/09/2020 23:12

Till tomorrow ladies 😊

HeIenaDove · 14/09/2020 23:15

@unique1986 I read 10 Rillington Place by Ludovic Kennedy back in the late 90s DH found it in a charity shop.

Popcornismandatory · 14/09/2020 23:19

David Tennant is spookily like the real Dennis - what a fabulous actor he is. We switched straight over to the documentary on Channel 5.

Defenbaker · 14/09/2020 23:22

@Bunnybigears He basically dismissed his lawyer, saying that he just wanted to tell the truth and so had no use for him. He seemed to think the lawyer would just slow the whole process down of "sorting this mess out".

I'm looking forward to tomorrow's episode (even though I don't think it will be exactly enjoyable viewing) - this is a very well done series.

Hearwego · 14/09/2020 23:36

He was caught in 1983 wasn’t he?..

As UK serial killers went, there weren’t many others that I can think of who dismembered bodies of men and kept them. The USA has a few.
He was ex army and was a trained Police Officer, not really someone who fits the bill for a serial killer, but it takes all kinds I suppose..

Hearwego · 14/09/2020 23:40

I also agree that Tennant looks like Nilsen in this, both Scottish too.
Nilson actually died in prison in 2018, I had to check on google. Served 35 years before his death.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 14/09/2020 23:45

I don't think army/police force is all that unusual for serial killers, wasn't the Golden State Killer a police officer too?

Chienloup · 15/09/2020 00:23

David Tennant had always given me the creeps, even when playing "nice" characters, so I think he's perfect for this. I find something about him extremely unsettling.

DH had never heard of Dennis Nilsen, I'm not sure how.

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 15/09/2020 00:31

I love DT in everything and anything. But he is particularly good at playing murderers! He's very good at the chilling evil thing!
My only criticism is that he hasn't said murder yet.

I recognise the name Dennis Nielson, but don't know why. It all happened before I was born. I could Google him but don't want too many 'spoilers'

Bowerbird5 · 15/09/2020 00:44

Chienloup
I hadn’t either. DH can’t believe I don’t remember it. I said DS1was born in 1977 and DS2 was born in 1980 so I must have just been very busy.
We lived in the far north of Scotland then so a long way from London although not that far from where he was born. DH worked with people from that village so probably talked about it more at work. He worked away from home too so we won’t have discussed it.

Tennant is a great actor. You can really imagine it is him.

Unknown69 · 15/09/2020 00:48

@Puppy72

He's really exaggerating his accent though sounds like he's slurring
It's because that's how the actual Dennis spoke the accent was very strong
GrimDamnFanjo · 15/09/2020 00:52

I saw the original cooker etc displayed at the Museum of London iirc on loan from the Crime Museum.

CSIblonde · 15/09/2020 01:09

@Hearwego didn't Dahmer in the US keep bodies? I caught the end of something about a 14yr old Chinese boy escaping but then being returned as Dahmer told the Police it was a lovers tiff Then he poured acid into his brain to finish him off. Mr Tenant is v good at creepy. Watching the repeat as missed it before.

IHaveBrilloHair · 15/09/2020 02:55

I'm waiting for all three parts so I can binge.
Only in daylight thought of course.
