Anyone else looking forward to this? Starts tonight at 9pm.

OP posts:
TonTonMacoute · 07/10/2020 22:19

I'm old enough to have read all the books when they first came out, & watched & enjoyed the first TV series, but in many ways I'm enjoying this one more

Me too! I have been watching it with DH and DS and we have all loved it.

Clawdy · 08/10/2020 08:36

I'm enjoying this one more, too. The new James is so much nicer than Christopher Timothy. And much as I loved Peter Davidson, this Tristan is funnier.

SallySeven · 08/10/2020 09:39

I agree as a lover of the books that I think this one has the edge.
(I did enjoy watching Robert Hardy though, back in the day.)

ImAncient · 08/10/2020 09:43

I’m watching them both side by side. It’s quite interesting seeing the differences. I prefer this Helen.

WhatWouldJKRDo · 08/10/2020 09:46

It has been a joy and I love the casting. Having useless Leslie Durrell and useless Tristan Farnon has been splendid - Callum’s hilarious.

And I love Mrs Hall, don’t care if she shouldn’t play games with them.

GiantKitten · 08/10/2020 11:27

That “congratulations, love” bit was genius (though sad for poor James of course). So many proper LOLs with this series.

They all seem to have grown into their parts - even though I suppose they won’t have filmed sequentially? Their interactions are so natural. And Mrs Hall is my hero with her shooting and driving skills!

Very much looking forward to the Christmas special and the next series.

@CaptainMyCaptain, I’m well into the first kindle book and loving it just as much as I remember. The books were so well-written and so funny (apart from the tragic bits). I’d forgotten that it opens with that terrible difficult calving - and he had to lie on bare cobbles in a small decrepit barn on the cold windy tops, not on a nice bed of a straw in a cosy farmyard - just as a PP pointed out Grin

AdoptedBumpkin · 08/10/2020 11:29

Loved the series, it was all too brief. Looking forward to the Christmas special.

ramblingsonthego · 08/10/2020 11:30

I am loving this series. I remember the original very well. I bet the BBC are kicking themselves that they turned it down.

To me its Sunday night TV in midweek. I wish they had put it on Sunday nights as I think c5 would get more viewers that way.

CaptainMyCaptain · 08/10/2020 11:51

I heard a R4 programme about YouTube yesterday. They mentioned that channel 5 are going after the older viewers now. I thought it had improved lately.

SallySeven · 08/10/2020 12:08

I've even left radio 4 now, I'm that old!

123456abcd · 08/10/2020 12:12

ramblingsonthego - it's repeated at 7pm on Sundays

Yeah it strikes me more as Sunday night 8pm viewing but guess they did it to follow The Yorkshire Vet.
Maireas · 08/10/2020 19:26

I know that the BBC are aiming for a younger audience, but I think it was a mistake not to take All Creatures Great and Small. Credit to C5 for considering an older audience, although I know young people who are enjoying it!

purpleme12 · 08/10/2020 20:07

Yes I would say it's for all ages

AuntieJoyce · 09/10/2020 21:58

Just come back to this thread and so nice to see that everyone else is really enjoying it too.

Big shout out to Tristan and his excellent comic timing. He’s made the series for me, especially when faced with that chicken

EerilyDeleted · 09/10/2020 22:20

Just watched Ep6. I wasn't sure after the first episode but it has really grown on me, I love the relationships between Siegfried, James and Tristan, it's beautifully shot, perfect escapist TV.

MollynAlly · 10/10/2020 00:12

I love it👌

Rhubarb01 · 10/10/2020 08:53

Another thumbs up from me. I read the books and watched the old BBC series, but I've thoroughly enjoyed this version. Love the casting and performances. Looking forward to the Christmas special and hopefully another series. Well done Channel 5 for commissioning this.

Rosehip10 · 10/10/2020 12:07

I was reading an interview with the director and apparently most of the overhead scenic work is done by drone and can do shots now that would have been impossible or massivley expensive with helicopters not so long ago.

RightOnTheEdge · 10/10/2020 14:39

I've loved it. I'm sad this series is over, I can't wait for the Christmas one.

It's great casting, I love all the main characters and their relationships with each other.

BasiliskStare · 10/10/2020 14:53

We have been watching it as a family ( Ds is a millennial - just ) - IF it is true that the BBC didn't take it as were worried about all age groups - well , they missed a trick there. Looking forward to the Christmas one. Sam West is just brilliant but all the actors are good. Oooh & @Rosehip10 - never thought of that - how clever. ( you can see how very non tech savvy I am - though I do like watching things and seeing how they have filmed etc to save on budget. ) & yes @AuntyJoyce - I think Tristan has been fabulous - but he was also funny in the Durrells - especially when the chap has a shot gun pointed at him and he deflected by asking about the bore etc.

Maireas · 10/10/2020 15:05

I loved the scene where Tristan had to do the surgery and kept running to the room next door to consult the textbooks!
I thought the surgical scene with the choking cow was very moving. I think that's how James comes across in the books, young, idealistic, determined and a bit intense!

GiantKitten · 10/10/2020 16:18

Nothing to do with All Creatures, but this is one of the best bits of drone footage I’ve ever seen. It’s breathtaking - Rome under lockdown.

Ginger1982 · 10/10/2020 16:19

I really hope we don't have to wait a whole year for series 2, especially with series 1 having been so short. That's the bonus with US programmes when they have around 24 eps a season and then you only have to wait about 6 months or less for the next season.

I am also hopelessly in love with Sam West now! 😆🥴

JaneJeffer · 10/10/2020 18:14

@GiantKitten that would have been more effective if they hadn't put the music on. Not much silenzio there Grin
