Ive just started to catch 30 Rock, i never saw it the first time. It does tickle me. I still think that Frasier was just perfect though. I wonder what they are doing now?

@Deadringer

I just watched the one where the radio station did a half hour fright night programme, 'nightmare inn'. Its an absolute riot, with Gill's 'romping with school chums in Surrey' speech. Just hilarious! I love modern family too. Never got on with the middle, found it a bit forced somehow, and while i liked Sienfield it doesn't compare to Frasier imo.
When Roz had to say "multiple murderer" after having Novocaine at the dentist! Grin

I love Frasier. Niles and Marty outshone the others and my favourite scenes are where Niles is made corkmaster and the one where he introduces his dog to the family.

Other favourites are
Friends
Big Bang Theory
The Middle
Parks and Rec
Roseanne - and I’m really enjoying The Conners
Ellen. I wish that’d be repeated
Everybody Loves Raymond

I have loved Frasier for longer than any other sit com. It lost something for me when Niles and daphne got together (the awful fat episodes to cover her RL pregnancy were poor) and anytime her family appear it's fairly bad. There are enough series of beautifully crafted episodes however for me to overlook that. There are so many incredible set pieces of perfect comedy.

I am afraid Friends leaves me cold. Each to their own I guess.

I adore Frasier, but agree it went 'off' a bit in the middle seasons, but I believe that coincided with one of the main writers (David Angelli?) being killed in 9/11.
It regained most of its former glory in the end seasons.
Modern Family and Friends did the same - started brilliantly and then went off. Friends became unwatchable for me once Monica's voice rose an octave and she became completely shrill and neurotic. Ross turned into a whining child.

I’m not really a comedy fan but I love love love fraiser! So well cast and hilarious.

How can we watch The Conners?
I watched it on moviesjoy, so glad it’s getting a third season.

Why didn’t people like Daphnes family?

@Quackersandcheese3

Why didn’t people like Daphnes family?
Because OMG the accents! Daphne’s Manchester accent wasn’t good but her brothers seemed to have a range of different accents including Simon’s very poor fake Cockney. Painful! They’d all be talking in solid Manchester accents IRL.
Inappropriatefemale · 12/08/2020 11:22

Where was Daphnes accent really from, or rather the actress Jane Leeves who played her? Why couldn’t they have just said she was from that part of England?! Makes no sense.

I guess a lot of us natural native English speakers find some global and regional accents initially difficult to follow. Jane Leeves Daphnes Fraser actress’s accent was not necessarily always typically local Mancunian (Manchester/Lancashire England) accent. I can imagine to the North American audience how this would be audibly a little perplexing. Similarly even though my native Received Pronunciation the accent traditionally regarded as the standard for English - I too find some British regional accents a little challenging when first spoken unexpectedly out of the blue especially when not in its usual spoken localities or say on board a long haul flight etc. Examples I personally need to concentrate including lip and body language to aid are the UK Ulster accent and many southern USA English accents and not necessarily very particular America accents like Pennsylvania Dutch English etc. English accents globally adds such diversity and richness of character with each an important component of the Anglosphere.

The perception of Brits in US sitcoms is always the same. Either eccentric, pub-loving lager louts who are never sober, or eccentric aristocrat with an upper class accent.

Inappropriatefemale · 12/08/2020 13:45

I also hate how Americans say ‘British accent’ as if it covers one accent, we natives wouldn’t say that.

Each to their own but if politically safe to suggest - I always refer to American or Canadian English as simply American or USA English. Naturally given the sheer geographic expanse and diversity of populations there are massive regional North American variations. I tend to find a few of the rural southern USA American English accents a little challenging to interpret especially when some English words have different meanings let alone spelling and grammar structure which has changed significantly from original modern English. The UK still surprises so many of my USA and Canadian friends when they visit as to why such a little island has such wide and different regional English accents.

Jane Leeves' own accent is pretty much RP iirc. The accent she does in the show is a pretty generic vaguely Northern accent.
Deadringer · 12/08/2020 15:14

Yes CallmeAngelina and Frasier says, that's easy for you to say Grin

KatherineJaneway · 12/08/2020 15:35

Simon’s very poor fake Cockney. Painful!

But so funny! It was meant to be a pisstake.

CallmeAngelina · 12/08/2020 16:58

I think Jane Leeves comes from Crawley or somewhere. Properly Southern, anyway.

Quackersandcheese3 · 12/08/2020 17:53

Yeah I suppose I agree that the accents of the family weren’t great but I still enjoyed their role in the show.

CharityDingle · 12/08/2020 20:09

Frasier always makes me laugh, no matter how often I have seen a particular episode.
I love all the main characters.

I love the way they all react anytime Lilith arrives, even Eddie. Grin

AdelaideK · 12/08/2020 20:40

Oh I love Frasier.

I love The Office, Friends and Parks &Rec too.

I'm amazed more than one person has said they love Everybody Loves Raymond. It's one of the worst shows ever imo.

Quackersandcheese3 · 12/08/2020 23:22

Fraiser is the best , I watched all
The seasons back to back in the first few weeks after having my baby. Was such a good wee show to chill to while snuggled up with a her. Malcolm in the middle was another favourite of mine.

savagebaggagemaster · 12/08/2020 23:27

We've watched every episode of Frasier at least 4 times. It's my comfort blanket show if I need cheering up. My 14 year old dd adores it. It's been so lovely to see her laugh at all the jokes that dh and I still find funny, even after all this time.

Prettybluepigeons · 13/08/2020 19:10
