He did overlook the two glasses of water on the countertop. He supposedly went out to buy milk for Chantelle’s hot chocolate, so why would she have made two glasses of water?

Smallsteps88 · 18/09/2020 21:08

I’m not sure there was anything inspirational about that storyline.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 18/09/2020 21:09

I think it makes a change to show the potential honest outcome/ it was horrible and harrowing but it was important to show imo

southeastdweller · 18/09/2020 21:10

Inspirational or not, DV homicide happens to at least two women a week in the UK so I don’t see any reason why this shouldn’t have been shown.

Smallsteps88 · 18/09/2020 21:10

Whereas watching Chantelle leave, press charges and have him face justice- that’s inspirational. I’m so fed up with soaps going for the big drama and forgetting that many are actually living these lives.

unique1986 · 18/09/2020 21:10

The worst the worst bit was when he just casually walked away.
He wanted to beat her up Black and Blue even if she didn't die.
There was absolutely no way out for her in my opinion I guess.

Calabasa · 18/09/2020 21:11

thats why they actually publicised this episode and what was going to happen as much as they did.. to give people a) the knowledge of what was going to happen, and b) to avoid watching it if it was going to be too difficult or cause potential problems for them.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 18/09/2020 21:12

Felt the same as when I watched “murdered by my boyfriend”- the message is that if you don’t leave the first time a man hits you, you risk your life.

southeastdweller · 18/09/2020 21:14

What I’m saying is that this tragic end for Chantelle could inspire other victims to get out before it’s too late.

unique1986 · 18/09/2020 21:15

It was the best episode of EastEnders in a long long time and I noticed Simon Ashdown was the writer.
My issue was they were not in it very long and was rushed at the end.

nancy75 · 18/09/2020 21:17

Showing her walking away & getting justice is too tidy for this kind of story line. 2 women a week die like this, it needs to be told.
I remember when they first started this story us discussing how they would end it & a few of us saying that to really do it justice he should kill her.

It’s terrible to watch but it’s a huge issue that needs to be talked about.
If 2 men a week died this way we’d never hear the end of it.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 18/09/2020 21:19

Felt like eastenders was before they started recycling all the characters and storylines

Smallsteps88 · 18/09/2020 21:20

I utterly disagree. I’m not going to go into it because honestly I’m just so angry.

meow1989 · 18/09/2020 21:22

I do feel a bit let down by the way she died (that sounds ghastly, bear with me) - ultimately it was an accident, though I understand the aftermath wasn't. But women are actively murdered by their abusers, with intent, and i feel like this was just a way that they'll be able to whizz him back to the square and thus placed story over message, does that make sense?

I do think the episode itself was very tense and hard to watch though. I was dreading one of the kids finding her.

And on a lighter note; that house is deifnately more than 2 bedrooms, why are the kids sharing?

RJnomore1 · 18/09/2020 21:24

That was a harrowing watch.

Missing the point slightly, a woman did actually die from falling on a knife in the dishwasher. I’m paranoid about how I stack it.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 18/09/2020 21:26

I do feel a bit let down by the way she died this I get and do agree with, but I also recognise Eastenders won’t show her being beaten to death.

Smallsteps88 · 18/09/2020 21:27

Thinking back on EE’s treatment of female characters at the hands of Male characters, this was in absolutely no way about helping DV victims. Women are fodder in the ratings game. It’s actually quite sick how many storylines are based on women being abused by men.

This is exactly what I think. Feeling rather underwhelmed by it all now tbh!
UsernameNotValid · 18/09/2020 21:39

I must admit I was surprised by the "accidental" injuries but I guess it highlights how cunning and manipulative abusers can be.

The statements released from Womans Aid and Refuge hinted that it was them who pushed this storyline in the direction it's gone.

Also, stupid as it sounds I did wonder if the manner of death had to be changed in-line with social distancing rules?

RJnomore1 · 18/09/2020 21:41

I think they probably took it as far as they could - his acts injured her leading to her death but then his actions also left her to die; like someone said they wouldn’t get away with showing him beating her but this made her death completely on him?

unique1986 · 18/09/2020 21:42

His intention was to physically push her and break her bones perhaps. We can only guess how far he would have gone had she not died there and then.

unique1986 · 18/09/2020 21:44

Yes they probably said it was murder because he walked away and let her die.
We all know he was gonna murder her one day or another it just happened to be that night.

unkindnessofravens · 18/09/2020 21:46

Awful to watch, but I agree with a pp that the manner of her death likely had to change due to social distancing restrictions.

I'm finding it hard to get along with the HD filming, I've realised I prefer Albert Square a little blurry!

Figgygal · 18/09/2020 21:54

I thought he was going to drown her after the water torture from the other week

SpanishFly · 18/09/2020 21:59

The actor who plays Gray is an ambassador for Women's Aid 💕
