The new series starts tonight and Jim has got a new dog! I can't wait Grin

PP’s have said how horrible grandma was nasty

You’re missing the point. She’s always been unpleasant, that’s why she’s Horrible Grandma. But she was horrible in a fairly realistic way - passive aggressive swipes, which were funny to watch. In the last episode she was just openly vile - it doesn’t fit with the humour of this programme, but it might work in a different show with broader comedy. The last two episodes have had the sort of characterisation and scenes of a totally slapstick show with grotesque characters.

Seetheprettysnowdrops · 21/04/2020 10:57

Fourpeasinapod t’s not meant to be taken seriously, it’s a comedy

Thanks for pointing that out Hmm

BeardedMum · 21/04/2020 10:59

I had been looking forward to this new series since the last ended and I am just so disappointed. It’s too OTT this time.

fourpeasinapod · 21/04/2020 11:16

Then don’t take it seriously. You needn’t worry if horrible grandma is nasty because she won’t be in it ever again.

I mean, I can’t see how her behaviour on Friday’s episode was offensive. There are worse things on TV. Her argument was bloody hilarious

CaptainMyCaptain · 21/04/2020 11:58

I agree completely with @Extracurricularfatigue. It's lost all subtlety and wit.

And again, it’s not taking a programme seriously to want it to be funny. Horrible Grandma wasn’t offensive. She just wasn’t funny in the style of this programme. People who enjoy FND enjoy its usual type of comedy. The last two episodes have been over-exaggerated and totally unsubtle - a different sort of humour. In a different programme they’d fit, but FND is usually more about plot and writing.

AvonCallingBarksdale · 21/04/2020 12:26

Struggling with this series. Martin was way OTT in the last episode and Johnny’s irritating me too. Shame as we’ve loved it until now 🤷‍♀️

fourpeasinapod · 21/04/2020 12:31

Just my opinion but I found nothing wrong with them. I was laughing my head of as usual.

Yes Gibby was very annoying but I just thought it was so funny

feedingfrenzyatfive · 22/04/2020 22:42

I wish that Robert Popper had called time at the end of S5 when Wilson died as this series has been disappointing. I agree that Grandma Goodman's overt German/Hungarian accent was much more developed than previously.

CoolShoeshine · 23/04/2020 03:47

The ‘boys’ almost seem like background characters now, they don’t have much dialogue and were previously very funny. It’s all about Jim, Martin and the extra characters.

This is so true. They're becoming the straight men.

Mucklowe · 24/04/2020 13:30

I'm actually sort of dreading tonight's episode in case it's rubbish Confused

CoolShoeshine · 24/04/2020 15:08

I’d actually forgotten about it being on tonight! Usually I look forward to it being on! Just shows how underwhelming it’s been recently- hoping for a good episode tonight!!

CherryValanc · 24/04/2020 15:26

Only just caught up with this series. I do love FND, even the rubbish episode. It is just so absurd!!

Jim has got more of a bizarre character. He even talks differently to how he was in season 1.

Paul Ritter always amazes me when I see him in something else. I have to double take - he's barely recognisable- one impressive actor.

midsomermurderess · 24/04/2020 18:03

I agree that this should have finished with series 5, the death of Wilson was a sort natural break point. It feels as if Robert Popper has just dashed this series off, as if he's lost interest in his characters. Even some of series 5 was a bit weak and lazy and running out of steam in parts. It's a knack I suppose, to know when to stop.

Seetheprettysnowdrops · 24/04/2020 19:40

Muck Lowe I'm the same as you

Half of me doesn't want to watch and ruin how I feel about this show

Optimist1 · 24/04/2020 22:37

Well at least we had a Shalom or three this evening, and Martin's shirt came off.

I loved the suggestion that Jim should try Jewish rice pudding - an echo of the former glory of FND.

SouthWestmom · 24/04/2020 22:47

I just like observational comedy I've realised so this has become too slapstick for me.

Although I love Mischief Theatre but that's really a play within a play

MyBlueMoonbeam · 24/04/2020 22:51

So disappointed with this series ☹

Haggisfish · 24/04/2020 23:28

I did like this episode. Although I was watching past series with dd and it was funnier, I agree, with the sons less exaggerated.

fourpeasinapod · 24/04/2020 23:33

In all fairness at the start of tonight’s episode I was slightly disappointed as it didn’t appear to be that funny but it got funnier towards the end

TheChosenTwo · 25/04/2020 08:22

We really didn’t like this latest episode and have enjoyed the series so far.
The character of Val is just too unbelievable - I know it’s a comedy but this was just too far fetched to be ‘believable’ in any way, it fell totally flat for us.

GinnyStrupac · 25/04/2020 08:32

This used to be so good. The boys now are just irritating rather than funny - OTT, not in a good way - for example. Nice dog though.

CaptainMyCaptain · 25/04/2020 08:45

I think last night's was the best of this series so far. Different strokes for different folks.

Roselilly36 · 25/04/2020 08:48

I am really disappointed with the new series too, given up on it now.
