I searched but can’t find a thread about this. I missed it and can’t seem to watch on iPlayer. Does anyone know why? Do I have to wait fir the three episodes to air first?

And finally, the ‘children’ are now 20? Is it good?

Rihanna is the worst...

Ifeel1000yearsold · 11/03/2020 21:50

Its really sad. I think this generation have such poor mental health, I think it said 45% rise in anxiety and depression in children and young people since 1999. I know some of that is more cases being reported/more people seeking help but I do wonder where things have gone so wrong.

Verily1 · 11/03/2020 21:51

It shows what happens to a generation exposed to the internet 24/7.

Smithtylater · 11/03/2020 22:00

Aww poor Parys. Thinking of his mum. Just welled up at the last bit.

bobbypinseverywhere · 11/03/2020 22:01

@Ifeel1000yearsold I agree - I think it’s more than just an increase in diagnosis/ reporting, I think that there is a lot less resilience.

@Verily1 that’s interesting, I agree about the internet, but I wonder if it’s just also a whole social mindset change away from personal responsibility/accountability. Whatever has happened, it’s terrifying.

Ifeel1000yearsold · 11/03/2020 22:03

I almost said the same @Verily1 but I’m not sure this generation of kids are those ones who had the iPads when they were tiny. I think my 2005 born daughter was one of the last ones to escape this fate. All the kids I know who were born 2008/9 plus had I pad access as toddlers. Goodness knows you they will fare in 10 years time.

Haworthia · 11/03/2020 22:06

I’ve always been fond of Rhianna. Although it was so sad that her parents tried to stay together for too long and she was raised in such a sad household. She’s a lovely girl and wise beyond her years.

Who is this Charlie who was taken into care, though? She went into care aged five? I don’t remember her from the early footage they showed. I’m really annoyed I’ve forgotten her because I remember all the children so well! I’d probably remember the mother but they obviously can’t show any footage of her.

Ifeel1000yearsold · 11/03/2020 22:09

Was that the only one? I thought there was one next week but looks like that’s a repeat showing

Verily1 · 11/03/2020 22:20

That’s it.

Invest 20 years watching a show and it ends like that.

I hate the bbc.

Elouera · 11/03/2020 22:22

@Haworthia- I too cannot recall Charlie and no memory of seeing her before!!! I've watched every episode also.

Surely there must be at least 1 episode, because at the end they showed the kids as they are now, but only had interviewed some of them Confused

Haworthia · 11/03/2020 22:24

That was it? I’m sure I saw James featured right at the end, but he didn’t even get to speak? And the triplets? They got nothing? What was the point of filming some for a montage at the end but not actually featuring them?

God, what a disappointment.

Haworthia · 11/03/2020 22:29

This bloody article provides more updates than that entire episode. The Charlie we don’t remember is known as Charlie G.

Interesting that the BBC caption said 21 families. Wikipedia says 22.

Tell you something scary though - I was 19 when I first started watching this series, younger than these kids are now. Life is short Shock

LuckyLickitung · 11/03/2020 22:33

I enjoyed following them over the years. There's a couple of "children" in my family around the same age.

There was naturally more to cover in the early years when there is so much change in development and it would naturally settle with age once into school and beyond. It's fairly natural for families to fade out over time too.

Some I do remember more clearly than others.
I remember the way a very young Paris was trained to move safely around the car, and the sculpture of a pregnant Alyson at Trafalfar Square. Such a very sad loss.

SallyOMalley · 11/03/2020 22:36

I had no idea this was on until I spotted it on the TV guide this evening (too late to watch it tonight unfortunately).

I knew Taliesin's mum when we were kids in the early 80s. Was he on it?

TinnedPearsForPudding · 11/03/2020 22:39

I think I remember Charlie, I'm sure she featured in an experiment in one episode to show how well bonded the babies were with their mums, and there was no bond there at all. I've never forgotten that as it was heartbreaking. I thought her mum changed her life around and joined the Transport Police though

sofiathe2nd · 11/03/2020 22:39

There’s some more updates on the ou website I think.

No idea if this will create a clicky link:

LaBelleSauvage123 · 11/03/2020 22:40

I didn’t think the three who were mainly featured tonight were ‘moany brats’ at all. I thought all three of them came across as reflective and resilient, especially as none of them had had straightforward childhoods. I liked the fact that they were all doing things they loved and seemed comfortable with who they were.

Haworthia · 11/03/2020 22:42

Here are some videos of the people who didn’t make the cut.

And I’m sure that’s James, top right. Looks like his mum Smile

Eve · 11/03/2020 22:46

Read the article - interested that Will is still playing tennis - I remembered his mum being very exhausted driving him for hours to lessons.

Who was the musician couples child?

Ohhh! I remember the mum joining the police force and then disappearing from the series. See, I knew I’d remember the parent better than the child. Shit.

She’s not on Wikipedia either. There are some big gaps in the show’s archive. Just noticed Tyrese isn’t there either. How sad that some families have been erased from existence.

Haworthia · 11/03/2020 22:48

Oh wait, she must be Charlotte Goldsmith on wiki. Wish you could edit posts, I wouldn’t be double posting all the time otherwise Grin

calpolatdawn · 11/03/2020 22:52

its not the internets fault Hmm, its probably the one few escapes they have, this country has hurtled fast down the shitter in the last 11 years, dear god it depresses me and im in my thirties, imagine this shitshow being the beginning of your life. Sad

Haworthia · 11/03/2020 23:02

I don’t blame the internet either @calpolatdawn. Technology is far from the root of all evil in this world, and it’s ludicrous to suggest the dark ages were better Grin

Here’s a bit about Charlotte from the Child Of Our Time book (which is rubbish - tries to combine the Open University stuff with generic pregnancy/child rearing advice.

I am gutted that things turned out so badly for her.

Child of our time?
SoMuchToBits · 11/03/2020 23:06

@Eve the child of the musician couple is Matt who is featured in the link that @Haworthia posted. Matt's mum was a childhood friend and neighbour of mine, and we are friends on FB, so I see updates of the family from time to time. Matt seems to be doing well.

theschoolonthehill · 11/03/2020 23:47

That was interesting. I welled up seeing Eve and her mother together in video footage. My own mother died of cancer when I was a young child and her story always stuck with me.

Rhianna is lovely. She grew up to be so self aware.

Wasn't there a girl from Wales who was very tomboyish when she was young and then became very girly. The last time it was filmed, she had a big barn dance 16th where her friends got very drunk. Anyone remember which one she was?

It is disappointing not to see more of them. I imagine there is a huge sense of pressure to be 'successful' when appearing in it as an adult so it is understandable not to wish to be filmed.

I thought there was a second episode of this?
