Child of our time?

I searched but can’t find a thread about this. I missed it and can’t seem to watch on iPlayer. Does anyone know why? Do I have to wait fir the three episodes to air first?

And finally, the ‘children’ are now 20? Is it good?

They were absolutely lovely. I can't believe anyone thinking they were moany and negative. They were obviously being asked about their feelings.

HarrietM87 · 12/03/2020 20:25

Yes I agree @friendlyflicka. I thought all of them were incredibly mature and had great perspective on their lives. Certainly more than I did at 19/20! Eve in particular. She is just lovely.

Oh I absolutely loved it, I have watched every episode since it began having had a (late) Millenium baby myself. I have watched these wonderful children grow into young adults like I've watched my own child. It was a bittersweet ending to a fabulous idea back in the day but the reality of following so many lives through such changing times was always going to be a feat. If you think about it, the technology alone since 2000 just blows your mind let alone the actual world as a result of that. I loved Eve, what a wonderful young woman, her Mum would be so proud and I feel so sad she'll never know that.

I would definitely recommend watching the Open University links up thread as they feature more of the children's stories, only about 4 minutes each, I guess some of the children's harsher stories are difficult to update (such as James who was removed due to the DV in his life), let's hope they all are in a better place or at least getting some support. I know Robert Winston seemed to be very invested in their lives through the series, it's a shame he didn't feature in the last part, and such a lovely tribute to Parys
Lapper at the end, they said in the BBC write up that they all still stay in touch and have done since the beginning, so perhaps they are each other's support. I will miss it for sure.

I absolutely love this programme! Thank you for letting us know it was back. I can remember being so sad when Eve’s mum died and so worried about James.

BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 12/03/2020 21:10

Hawarthia- thank you!

Yes, I remember Ethan's mother. I remember her irritating me to glory.

Haworthia · 12/03/2020 21:15

I remember Ethan’s mother as being very sad. She lost twin daughters I think? And Ethan’s behaviour was maybe quite challenging: autism and/or ADHD? I felt sorry for her.

ChicCroissant · 12/03/2020 21:25

I also thought that Eve's father had remarried in the last programme.

I remember the boy that was 'kidnapped', his mother had to move and I don't think he appeared after the second series. I wonder what happened to him, I hope he's doing OK.

pratchetteer · 12/03/2020 22:30

I was just really glad to see it on TV again, even if it was just 1 hour.
I used to know Eve's family, still vaguely in contact on facebook, her dad is definitely still a church goer and I think the whole family is too? He remarried in 2014 I think to a lady with a daughter of her own.

I've always thought Rhianna was a great person to listen to speaking, very clear on her opinions! I don't think being opinionated is always a bad thing.

The Charlie with the baby is definitely Charlotte Goldsmith/Charlie G who had the policewoman mother, she looks so similar to when she was younger. A shame the other Charlie who had a baby wasn't featured, would have loved to have heard her thoughts on becoming a young mother seeing as I think her mum and grandma did the same thing.

@caulkheaded

Thankyou.

purpleme12 · 12/03/2020 23:02

I'm watching it now. It's so sad about Charlie. Bars on the windows. I feel so sad for her when she was little

So did I,didn't come across as 'irritating' or hard 'work' imo,she was very depressed though.

partystress · 12/03/2020 23:18

I feel a bit bereft that this has come to an end. They are my eldest DC’s age - he was an IVF baby, after 9 years of trying, and I was still in the mists of new Mum befuddlement and wonder when COOT started. Feel very attached to them all, and protective towards them.

Seems to me that far from moany, they are incredibly self-aware and mature, and all very likeable.

I found last night’s programme though a bit different in tone. It felt voyeuristic in a way I had not felt before. Perhaps because it condensed so much it had to focus on the starker moments.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 12/03/2020 23:20

Bear in mind its been 20 years, so I would have been in Upper Sixth when it started.

I remember finding her hard to watch, perhaps with the intervening years, I'd feel differently, I did not recall the bereavements

purpleme12 · 12/03/2020 23:25

Did Rihanna have behavioural problems? I mean is that why they took her to a psychologist or whatever you call them? I can't remember

purpleme12 · 12/03/2020 23:27

Anxiety and depression has increased by 45 per cent. That's loads

Poetryinaction · 12/03/2020 23:31

Loved the baby falling asleep at the end. So sweet!

purpleme12 · 12/03/2020 23:33

Can't bear watching Eve's mum saying her greatest fear is not seeing them grow up when you know what's coming sitting here with tears

purpleme12 · 12/03/2020 23:44

Richard(?)s mum and are separated but still live together! And he says it's had no impact on him! What a lovely story

purpleme12 · 12/03/2020 23:53

That statistic about how many people thought same sex relationships were wrong in 2000 compared to now is shocking. I didn't realise how far we'd come

purpleme12 · 13/03/2020 00:13

I read not expecting it to be so emotional
I've watched them all too
So sad it's finished loved them
Such a good series
Fascinating

purpleme12 · 13/03/2020 00:13

*was not expecting that should say

I found this heart wrenching. It’s my own worst fear.

Nathan, I think. What they didn’t mention was his dad came out as gay years ago and his ex-wife didn’t mind him bringing men back to the house. I was genuinely amazed that they still lived together - I figured it was more financial necessity. She’s a tougher woman than me!

purpleme12 · 13/03/2020 12:08

Oh wow. I wonder if she's with someone?
