It's the first tweet at the top of that page btw... Can't link directly to the thread for some reason...

Oh, I love that GrinI think the mascot with CIlic is my favourite. And Delpo flossing.

All of them in fact Grin

Raahh · 16/03/2020 10:33

DD2 (9)made me laugh this morning. Mother's Day tea at school is cancelled - and she was suppose to be singing with the choir. She thinks it is something to with the ban on big gatherings. (There are about 25 in the choir- bless her).

Grin
PrivateSpidey · 16/03/2020 11:00

Ah what a shame Raahh - and bless her. Ours is supposedly still on (no choir though AFAIK!) So we'll see.

Glad you liked the thread. That mascot always makes me laugh - Marin is so sweet about it too. I noticed he was speaking French as well!

I also liked the Murray hula hoop contest where Andy looked like he barely had to make any effort at all Grin and Rafa's press conference. And Tiafoe. And Goffin's "girlfriends" Grin

Actually yes, all of them!

Grin A lot of those did make me chuckle.

Grigor throwing grapes into Stan's mouth Grin

Not sure that camel looked too keen when Djok suggested he change his diet Grin

Thanks Spidey we’re just at the airport waiting to fly home. It’s been a bit of a surreal weekend. Portugal are taking the virus very seriously. Most places like museums, churches have been closed. There is even tape around children’s playgrounds and public spaces are closed. It’s been very quiet and the locals have been eyeing us up a bit suspiciously! (One woman tried to spray me with disinfectant Shock!)

Luckily the bars have been open (for now) but I will be glad to get home - it’s all been a bit strange and it’s scary how quickly things do get shut down. It’s a bit weird that England seems to be so out of step with what other countries are doing.

Anyway - looking forward to catching up on your tennis musings - hope everyone is well.

JaneJeffer · 16/03/2020 14:17

It's like that here Fizzy all the playgrounds locked up. It's all so strange.

Fizzywinegum · 16/03/2020 14:33

It is all very strange Jane - hope that you’re managing ok

PrivateSpidey · 16/03/2020 14:57

Glad you're ok Fizzy. I can't believe someone tried to sanitize you though!! Shock

Just seen the WTA is off until 2 May...

OP posts:
Raahh · 16/03/2020 17:45

Fizzy that is shocking!

Hope you are on the way home now.

Jane must be very surreal.

Spidey 2nd May Sad.

This year, sports wise, feels like is written off in a way, and for those who are not at the top of the sport, it will be catastrophic- they rely on going week to week to tournaments- mostly earning very little.

Raahh · 16/03/2020 19:05

Dh is gutted. The FA have cancelled all grass roots football- he runs an under 14s girls team- they had 3 matches left (a lot postponed due to the weather) and were on track to win their division. It is a massive climb from where they started 3 years ago. He hoped they would carry on, whilst schools were still open.

On the plus side, he is also fixtures secretary for the league. He no longer has to worry about juggling all that .

PrivateSpidey · 16/03/2020 20:28

Completely agree with this Raahh. The guardian had a feature yesterday about a guy playing either a challenger or futures in Kazakhstan, he flew all the way there and it was cancelled, then he only just made it home (Germany) as they closed the borders. I hope the ATP will find a way to pay players "sick pay" or something during this time.

So sorry to hear about your DH/DD's team, it must so disappointing for them.

My dad is a season ticket holder at Liverpool and (being 6 points from the premier League aside!! He can't talk about that!!) he was pointing out there are loads of small businesses around Anfield that depend on match day business, takeaways, pubs, etc. The impact of all this is just unbelievable. I can't believe it's only a week since IW was called off.

The problem for tennis as well (sorry to be even more gloomy) is all the travel involved in the tours, it's not like they can just play behind closed doors if players can't travel to where they're supposed to be. God knows how long it will take to get the show back on the road.

Right, I might need to go now before I bring everyone else down with my complaints! And I shouldn't really, because it is "only" sport...but still...

OP posts:
Raahh · 16/03/2020 20:43

Spidey I hear you- I know on one level it is only sport- but it is, for many people, their livelihood depends on events going ahead (don't just mean the multi millionaires) and it affects so many things. I am not a fan of the betting industry- but they employ a huge number of people. And the fact that there is no sport , means no bets.

PrivateSpidey · 16/03/2020 22:09

That's true as well Raahh. Advertising etc as well. Sigh. It's awful.

The Tennis Podcast is continuing btw in case anyone fancies a listen. I think they are doing best moments/matches type of thing. So that's something!!

PrivateSpidey · 17/03/2020 12:05

Hi all, hope everyone is doing ok. Sorry for the gloomy post last night. I'm going to keep posting on here so will try and stay positive!

I've just been watching Andy v Romesh in the sport relief mini golf challenge Grin Loved the commentary: "fifth hole, a par 3, seven yards" Grin

I've already watched loads of my favourite films Hmm need to pace myself a bit I think! Going to listen to the podcast and do some baking.

Hope everyone is ok

Waves to Private. I'm Ok but must admit had a huge lump in my throat when I went for a sea front walk yesterday & saw the Newhaven/Dieppe ferry steaming off to France. But am getting lots of photos/vieos & skype. We are so lucky to have that.

I remember my late MIL saying that when WWII broke out & her favourite brother was posted far overseas it took nearly 7 weeks before they had heard that he'd arrived safely & then letters took about 3 weeks.

Lovely sunny day here - off for a walk shortly.

Raahh · 17/03/2020 12:17

The commentary was great, Spidey Grin

At least the rain has stopped -which is a positive. Had a noce walk with the dog. I was discussing the impact no tennis for the next umpteen months may have on the ATP finals (at the moment Cristian Garin in the top 8- I wouldn't expect that to still be the case if it was business as usual). The Dog did not have much to say on the matter.

Grin
PrivateSpidey · 17/03/2020 12:33

Grin very disappointing from DDog! That's madness if they keep the current rankings for the WTFs Shock although it would be interesting!

I noticed Justin Gimelstob (Hmm remember him?) suggested using a two year rolling system or something. He was chatting about it with John Isner on twitter Hmm so I moved on Grin

magi so sorry about your visit. Skype is good isn't it, we use it a lot with our NZ contingent.

Well I say that, but what usually happens is DS and his cousins take over, showing each other their bedrooms and putting daft filters over their faces etc Grin but sometimes we do actually manage to talk to the adults as well!!

But yes when you compare it to something like you said about the WW2 soldiers, it's amazing - we have so much to be grateful for in that sense, we really do.

Just put the cake in the oven. Anyone fancy a piece?! Grin Cake Brew

Maybe next I should make one of those tennis cakes from GBBO Grin at least I'd get the court markings right, if nothing else Grin

OP posts:
magimedi · 17/03/2020 12:38

It's not so much my visit but the thought I can't get to my baby (your kids are always that, even at approaching 40!) if he needs me. Silly & I do feel OK now after yesterday's wobble.

I see Tomic is in self isolation - not been tested but is pretty sure he's got it.

Raahh · 17/03/2020 12:44

GimelstobHmm

Ooh, cake Cake. That tennis cake was very odd- I swear they make up half the challenges on Bake Off.
My mum has just posted something on FB about how all she seems to be able to buy anywhere is chocolate.Chocolate.

JaneJeffer · 17/03/2020 13:25

Happy St. Patrick's Day everyone. Horrible rain and fog here. The boys have not emerged from their rooms yet. I think they're taking this isolation very seriously Grin
