Yes, I've just seen the IW cancellation news. It's hard to know what is the best way of dealing with it, rankings questions included Hmm

magimedi · 09/03/2020 08:22

And yet the French Open have siad they are going ahead (atm).

www.france24.com/en/20200306-french-open-organisers-not-considering-cancellation-over-virus-fears

PrivateSpidey · 09/03/2020 08:26

Oh no Sad

So many of the players are already out there. Petra spent her birthday (yesterday) on a flight for this!!

I have to say, I can't ever remember a tournament this big being cancelled. Ever.

Sport is the thing that always carries on, isn't it? It's a completely understandable decision under the circs, but I'm in shock!

Miami must be in doubt, they have already cancelled music concerts there happening around the same time apparently.

Ben Rothenburg, tennis journalist, just tweeted: "Federer sure picked the right time to have surgery, eh?"

Private I knowHmmI've seen a lot of similar comments Grin.

I still think my way is the best one Grin- if a player was already scheduled for a tournament, then the points stay as they are. If they were not due to play, then they weren't defending them anyway, and they lose them. That's fair. And none of this protected ranking nonsense, or 'just because it's Federer/Serena/Andy'. Not having any of that.

Not when I'm in charge. Grin.

This is coming up to my favourite bit of the year, the clay season, (for obvious reasons) I am worried a lot of it will be affected. Rome could be in doubt, even though it is still a fair way off.

PrivateSpidey · 09/03/2020 09:37

Yes, if they let them keep last year's points, Fed could end up being seeded 2 for Wimbledon again!!

I also think your way is the fairest Raahh Grin

The WTA is going to have a similar dilemma, eg Andreescu is the defending champ but she wasn't playing this year as she was injured. So will she lose points or will they all retain their points? Confused

OP posts:
PrivateSpidey · 09/03/2020 10:02

I've just been reading that points will drop off after 52 weeks as they usually do. That's it, tournament or not, apparently.

OP posts:
Raahh · 09/03/2020 10:29

They had better not seed Fed 2 for Wimbledon- although if they use their convoluted formula, in theory I think Rafa has done enough over the last 2 years to keep his place. I hope.

I definitely think my way is fairest.

Raahh · 09/03/2020 10:30

I was also thinking (whilst walking the dog, as you do) re- The French Open decision, and the fact they say it is ok, as they are an out door tournament. Well- this is the first year they have a roof. Be ironic if the corona issue means they decide they can't use it Grin.

PrivateSpidey · 09/03/2020 10:38

They had better not seed Fed 2 for Wimbledon
Grin
I did think I shouldn't have suggested that but I had already pressed post!! Grin

I'm not sure I follow their logic re RG being outdoors, although good point about the roof.

In the absence of tennis, there is always 'Our Girl'.

I keep seeing the trailer. It's like the BBC knew IW would be cancelled. Grin.

PrivateSpidey · 09/03/2020 11:41
Grin

Not to mention Eggheads (repeats).

OP posts:

Grin

I will never forgive them for that. I mean repeats a quiz show no one watches ffs Grin.

PrivateSpidey · 09/03/2020 19:51

Grin surely the only benefit of repeating it is if you saw it the first time, you can wow your fellow viewers by "knowing" all the answers the second time. The downside is you'd have to watch Eggheads twice Grin

kazza I've just been watching Cadfael - it's on to series 3 and Sean Pertwee has been replaced Shock by an actor who looks a bit like Wayne Ferreira Grin it's quite disconcerting.

I can't believe we are going to have no tennis to talk about yet again this week! I was so looking forward to IW Sad I see the players can stay on site and use the practice courts etc. Perhaps they should screen that Confused

OP posts:
Raahh · 09/03/2020 20:07

I have watched repeats of Pointless, and wowed everyone with my knowledge Grin.

I am very sad about no tennis. Sad

kazzaD66 · 09/03/2020 20:18

Oh no, private !
I don't remember that Hmm
Is Wayne Ferreira still playing Hugh Beringer or have they made up a new character?

PrivateSpidey · 09/03/2020 20:25

Yes he's still Hugh Beringar!!

Here he is - or is it Wayne Ferreira in medieval dress?!

Ok, on reflection maybe he doesn't look that much like him Grin

Sorry to be posting this nonsense on here btw, I know this has nothing to do with tennis. But desperate times and all that.

Tennis
OP posts:
kazzaD66 · 09/03/2020 20:31

Oh yes, I think I vaguely remember him now.

Not a patch on the rather lovely Sean Pertwee though Grin

I was really looking forward to IW now I've got Prime. Although, given the time difference, I suppose a lot of the matches would be late night /early morning here.

Fizzywinegum · 09/03/2020 21:48

I am also sad about IW being cancelled Sad

I think that actor does look a bit like Wayne Ferreira Spidey (clutching at straws Grin)

Now that the whole of Italy is now on lock down I fear for the clay court season and possibly the French Open - I think there are quite a lot of cases in France.

I think Rafa should go back to his yacht and we will probably end up living in our parallel tennis universe. It would be really strange if tennis was played ‘behind closed doors’ if it came to that.

I always want to record Only Connect and pretend that I know all the answers - that is such a hard quiz show - nobody would believe I knew all the answers though!

PrivateSpidey · 09/03/2020 22:07

Fizzy I like Only Connect as well but yes it's definitely v tricky!

I was reading that they discussed playing IW behind closed doors and it was decided against - not sure why. That would have been something at least. Although weird to watch - was it Nottingham last year where they ended up doing that because of the bad weather? And it was so strange to watch. But then they moved it indoors, it wasn't just played without fans.

The ATP has said "the calendar beyond Indian Wells remains as status quo" and Miami says it's still planning to go ahead, safety remains top priority etc. So maybe they are thinking of playing behind closed doors??

OP posts:
magimedi · 09/03/2020 22:46

I got one right on Only Connect ce soir - makes me feel like a fucking genius! Can't remember which one it was - had the strain of University Challenge straight after! Grin.

I love you all dearly & I love tennis Tennis but atm, I am more concerned with keeping my DH clear of this wretched virus as he is in his mid 70's.

Not panicing but concerned.
