I have been such a kind, kind mother and agreed to postpone watching until Sat night as DS1 is out tomorrow and wants to watch it with me ( he caught up on episode 1 today and loved it). So will be avoiding his thread until then. I am astounded by my own selflessness.

beanaseireann · 17/01/2020 00:21

I got to see it as you suggested flouncyfanny on the repeat showing last night with signing.
Thank yku.

380 posts with this one and it’s only been on once!Hmm

hazandduck · 17/01/2020 09:32

Glad I found this thread! I watched the first episode last night.

My thoughts so far:

Tom definitely gaslights Kate - the whispered antagonising at the beach and the putting the wine in her hands - remember Girl On The Train, the alcoholic whose husband convinced her she had a problem to keep her in line? You just knew as soon as he said quietly “go then take the children” she would react and look like the bad person. Why would he ply her with drink then send her off with his kids in the car? Very odd.

The MIL is definitely off - the way she said she didn’t want him to wake up in the hospital was quite sinister.

I can usually spot an affair in a show a mile off - I said to DH when Tom hugged Jess goodbye after the barn dance “there’s something there.” I think Jess actually participates in provoking Kate, be it from jealousy that she is married to Tom/has 3 healthy children or some other reason, but the way she kept going on in the car about “how much Tom adores” Kate just set my teeth on edge, she could see Kate was stressed already trying to break up the girls’ arguing in the back of the car but kept poking about the mother in law etc. She also went almost in to a parental role at the beach saying to Tom “I’ll go with her” as if Kate was a stroppy child needing looking after.

Something else that stood out to me was when the police officer walked past the park, it was such a sick remark “did you see any bodies?” I think the teenager on the swing said. The copper showed signs of PTSD panicking in the car about not being able to save them etc yet he was so casual and took it in his stride they were making jokes about the bodies of dead little girls. Unless I misheard that?? I was angry just watching it! Not to mention they were supposedly very close friends.

I don’t think the police officer (sorry I forgot his name) trusts Jess, DH couldn’t understand why he hadn’t mentioned the padlock to her as she is his wife, I said maybe he’s being professional, but thinking on it would you be able to keep that to yourself from your wife when it’s about your best friends?

I don’t trust Kate’s GP one bit. He seemed to like suggesting she was unstable, so unprofessional and personal. The headteacher seems to be in love with her I agree with other posters on that!

I cannot wait for the next episode!

peanutfoldover · 17/01/2020 11:38

Come on tonight!!! Hope the DD goes to bed easily so we can be settled down in time!

originalcatlady · 17/01/2020 11:41

@LaBelleSauvage123 I've promised that to DD in the past ... I watch it while she's out and pretend I haven't, then watch it with her

LaBelleSauvage123 · 17/01/2020 11:43

Ooh sneaky!

nibdedibble · 17/01/2020 12:26

Oh crap, I'm not in tonight...Will have this as my Saturday morning watch. See you all tomorrow!

If Emily was running through the woods barefoot in her PJs then it looks as though she was escaping/running away from something.

After this she ended up back in her padlocked bedroom.

Unless this scene is from a different day?

Perhaps she was in the habit of doing this -could be sleep walking as has been previously mentioned, or something else.

The padlock could have been used for this reason.

I don't think we know what date that surveillance tape was from where she bought the padlock.

SpanishFly · 17/01/2020 13:59

Were the kids meant to be locked away safely so they survived? Seems a bit grim for a drama series for the intention to be a suicide and to kill your 3 kids.

SpanishFly · 17/01/2020 14:12

Also. Why is it called Deadwater Fell?? The name of the fictional village is Kirksomething

ChicChicChicChiclana · 17/01/2020 14:55

Just watched it and didn't find it confusing. The car crash may have put one of the little girls in a wheelchair but she was disabled before that. She had walking sticks at the beach and DT's Mum said "someone should have been watching her" which is why Kate told her to fuck off and stormed off home. I don't think DT and the policeman's partner were having an affair ... more likely a one-off quickie.

ChicChicChicChiclana · 17/01/2020 15:00

I did think the dinner party after it had happened where people were giving their theories about who had done it was pretty ludicrous.

Also thought it unlikely that Kate's GP would have been interviewed so casually (with the main policeman character just happening to hear what he said about her anti-depressant prescription) and that he would have talked about this at the dinner.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 17/01/2020 15:16

If you go on the theory that it's the least/most likely person 'whodunnit', I'd wager my money on the policeman, if it's not DT's character.

Of course, it could well be that it is DT and the remaining three episodes fill in the gaps as to why he killed his family.

CassandrasCastle · 17/01/2020 17:01

@Inappropriatefemale the number of posts is hilarious Grin

Ok have rewatched and at the very start when the car flips and the crabs are there it’s as if they are actually falling out of the car? But they walked through a forest to the beach so car not parked at the beach? Suppose the girls collected crabs in buckets maybe. Maybe more of a symbolic thing than anything else though

Nifflernancy · 17/01/2020 20:29

I was really confused by the crabs too, I had to pause several times! Surely it must just be something weirdly symbolic rather than an actual clue?!

adhdme2019 · 17/01/2020 21:12

So the girls were already dead when the was started?

Bunnybigears · 17/01/2020 21:15

So if he went upstairs and the girls were dead why didnt he leave/call the police etc?

edgewater · 17/01/2020 21:21

I think I’ll have to rewind. Why were we at the crematorium and now at a grave side.

IcedPurple · 17/01/2020 21:22

So far so dull.

This is excruciatingly slow.

SouthernFreeez · 17/01/2020 21:24

thought they had 3 kids? only 2 mentioned at funeral so did 1 survive?
