Yes wendy craig was the nanny. She was a sister in the Royal

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 27/12/2019 12:33

Yes, you're right about Wendy Craig. Well remembered.

On the subject of burns, when I was about five, I reached over the teapot at teatime and managed to spill very hot, black tea all over my arm. Due to DM's quick actions, I wasn't so much as left with a scar.

Rockbird · 27/12/2019 12:36

This will out me but I caught fire in the same way as Isla on CTM. I was about her age and I'd been to a party and sat in front of the fire when I got home. I was wearing a pinafore dress that tied at the back and one of the ties trailed into the fire. It burnt through my clothes and burnt my hair and my back was only saved by the fact it was winter and I had about 6 layers on. My mother had been hoovering and didn't hear me scream for ages.

Mrsjayy · 27/12/2019 12:44

Oh Rockbird that is awful

PuppyMonkey · 27/12/2019 13:03

My mum had lots of babies in the 1960s (Catholic Grin) and for her it went:

1960 - home birth
1962 - home birth
1963 - home birth (during the famous Big Freeze)
1964 - hospital birth
1966 - hospital birth (that was me).

Ihavethefinalsleigh · 27/12/2019 13:19

Burns are my very worst nightmare. That's the main reason I couldn't watch this episode.

CaptainMyCaptain · 27/12/2019 14:14

Everyone at our house thought the little girl said the cat had pooed on her and it was going to be about toxoplasmosis (she said 'calf' in a Scottish accent) until she started twirling round in front of the fire.

woodhill · 27/12/2019 17:18

Sister MJ is ultra annoying as is Miriam Margoyles.

Christmas tree incident was interesting

dementedma · 27/12/2019 17:25

The whole thing was laughable. the islanders would have been able to dealt with births as part of everyday life and would not have welcomed intrusion from English incomers (many of them still don’t)!
The nurses would not have known how to manage a rowing boat to get from one island to another, nor been allowed to.
The white stag appearing at the Callenish stones was just bollocks.
The whole thing was so stereotyped as to be offensive.

iklboo · 27/12/2019 17:53

I couldn't watch to the end. It was a trite pile of pants. Like others have said the islanders could probably deliver babies blindfolded. It was all 'ooh the poor backwards things not like in That There London Where We Are Oh So Modern Don't You Know'.

And yes we know it's cold in The Outer Hebrides at Christmas. There's no need for all the wrapped up in unmatching (perish the thought) clothes.

ConfCall · 27/12/2019 19:36

I loved District Nurse. I remember a child who’d turned orange having eaten loads of carrots.

I wish they’d repeat DN on the Drama channel.

Mrsjayy · 27/12/2019 19:50

Sister MJ is annoying and I think immortal I said this before but the woman must be a 100 if she is a day☺

impostersyndrome · 27/12/2019 20:09

I too found the little girl’s accident upsetting, but managed to suspend my critical faculties to wallow in the, mostly, happy endings.

As for Stephen McGann, I agree he’s a bit overused, but he’s a delight to read on Twitter, clearly a lovely man IRL, so I feel bad thinking he might see the criticism of his acting.

woodhill · 27/12/2019 20:55

Also the woman left behind who was a teacher In Waterloo Road who always plays the same kind of character is irritating.

Tbh most of the cast are , apart from Nurse Crane and Fred.

Mrsjayy · 27/12/2019 21:24

Nurse Crane is a ledge !

jay55 · 28/12/2019 06:25

The only good thing about the long drawn out Christmas episode was the idea that the doctor might stay on the island.

A new doctor is exactly what the series needs.

Squigean · 28/12/2019 06:38

I'd actually forgotten about the white stag thing. I might have blocked it out! It was so ridiculous and pointless.

MJ does need to go, or have far fewer stories, which I totally agree the doctor does too.

daisypond · 28/12/2019 06:59

Were the Scottish accents right? I expected more Gaelic and Gaelic-influenced speech. Were little girls in the ‘60s in such a conservative place called Isla?

FeltCarrot · 28/12/2019 07:07

Nurse Lucille must be a time traveller. While they were all peeling spuds, she was wearing a green fringed M&S coat/cardigan. I know because I had the same one about 14 years ago😂😂😂

Nighttimenope · 28/12/2019 07:11

The Wee Free is not the reformed Presbyterian church, it’s the Free church.
But it’s not mentioned in the programme anyway so 👍🏻

Nighttimenope · 28/12/2019 07:13

The accents were Scottish but about as accurate as a London accent representing Yorkshire.

Nighttimenope · 28/12/2019 07:16

Agree with the poster calling the depiction of the islands and islanders nearly offensive. Loads of inaccuracies, romanticism and stereotyping.

daisypond · 28/12/2019 07:25

Thank you, Nighttime. I’m no expert in Scottish accents. Those accents didn’t seem right for the Hebrides, especially in those days. The perfect English for people speaking in what was likely to be their second language also struck me as unrealistic.

Smashtastick · 28/12/2019 08:06

Overall I enjoyed it if you ignored all of the very valid points already mentioned.

I think that; sadly Sister Monica Joan needs to pass away.
The Turner's need to move to the outer Hebrides.
We need a new hunky doctor for Nurse Dyer to fall in love with.
Bring back Patsy
Trixie needs to fall in love with a docker and get knocked up out of wedlock and lose her little rich girl persona.
I'd like to see them tackle the racism Lucille would have experienced properly and not just nod to it occasionally. They did at first but it very quickly just became low level.
Less births and more about the other issues that pp have mentioned of the time.

Smashtastick · 28/12/2019 08:07

Oh and mother superior needs to sod off back to the mother house.
