But why just delete the dildo? Sex-toy selectivism!

NumbersStation · 22/01/2020 18:23

NumbersStation · 22/01/2020 18:25

Time to plant your spring tubs Fred lad. You will always have your place in CTM for me.

So will Violet - if she stops interfering Wink

toffeeghirlinatwirl · 22/01/2020 20:21

Found this thread out of boredom and started reading about the cringey Christmas special.
That was only on in our house because we we were waiting for Gavin & Stacey and cba turning over! I agree with everything said about this particular episode but it got me wondering why I stopped watching CtM as it used to be the highlight of my Sunday evenings.
My own question has been answered in subsequent post upon post here ~ drifting away from the original JW books; Dr Turner overkill; sister MJ overstaying her welcome and shoehorning in every social change and sugarcoating it.

I'm another huge fan of Phyllis Crane. She's marvellously written and played. Somebody long back on the thread mentioned about the scenes when Barbara was dying/ died and I actually got teary recalling that.

I'm going to go back a few series and give it another go (without any xmas specials) and hopefully be back and up to date.

FlamingoAndJohn · 22/01/2020 20:24

Why delete the dildo?
The women of CTM don’t require the services of a midwife due to doing too many jigsaws.

Smithtylater · 22/01/2020 22:04

I randomly watched the first ever episode today after seeing it on netflix...its changed so much!

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 23/01/2020 06:47

Fred is salt of the earth and I like that his part has been 'bigged up'.

I love Sister Monica Joan. The wisdom in her madness is awesome. I wonder how old she is supposed to be though? 80s? I am hoping that she doesn't shuffle off this mortal coil any time soon.

Saucery · 23/01/2020 07:42

I suspect she will be used as a symbol of the demolition of Nonnatus House Sad

GlitteryGracie · 23/01/2020 07:54

I wonder how old she is supposed to be though? 80s? I am hoping that she doesn't shuffle off this mortal coil any time soon.

When she say the white stag in the Christmas special I thought that it was a really poetic way of her dying.... was shouting "noooo" at the telly as I love her.

Yes she'll probably die just before/as they leave Nonatus house Sad

WineOrGinOrBoth · 23/01/2020 08:04

I love Sister MJ as well. She comes out with pearls of wisdom. She reminds me of my gran who was gripped with Alzheimer’s before she died.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 23/01/2020 17:53

On the subject of Sister MJ, did you know that the actress who plays her, Judy Parfitt, played Elizabeth Corday's mother in ER? Only realised when I binge-watched the latter before Christmas.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 23/01/2020 17:54

Oh and Judy Parfitt is 84!!!

MrsSlocombesPussy · 23/01/2020 18:35

Dr Turner doesn't irritate me so much, but a few things are
Is Dr Turner the only GP in his practise? Shouldn't there be more? Maybe even a female GP (or a lady doctor as they used to call them?).
I'm sure there would have been Indian doctors around by then too, my GP was Indian back in the 70s.

CanIHaveATiaraPlease · 23/01/2020 19:01

I live in a naice village. The female gps are still referred to as ‘lady doctors’.

CaptainMyCaptain · 24/01/2020 09:00

We had an Indian GP in a small town in the 60s, it was worthy of comment but I don't remember any adverse reaction.

Admittedly a lot later, in the 80s, I took my 2 year old to a male locum and she said loudly 'That's not a doctor it's a man!

Binglebong · 24/01/2020 16:21

Saucery I dont want to know how long Terry Wogan stays up, thank you very much! Shock

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 24/01/2020 16:34

We're there male nurses in the 60s?

Mrsjayy · 24/01/2020 16:49

I remember male nurses as a kid mid 70s onwards so yeah.

Mrsjayy · 24/01/2020 17:35

So yeah I imagine there would have been mid 60s*

Saucery · 24/01/2020 17:54

Ermmmmm, yes, Binglebong I could have phrased that better!

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 24/01/2020 19:59

There have always been male nurses working in psychiatric hospitals, because it was seen as an advantage to have some strong men around in case a patient got violent. A few years ago when I was working in a university I helped out at a graduation ceremony. It was noticeable that the vast majority of the nurses graduating were female except when it was the mental health nursing cohort's turn.

Clawdy · 24/01/2020 22:44

I remember male nurses working in our local hospital in 1965, not many, but certainly several on the mental health wards, one or two on the men's medical ward, and one on the children's ward.

Bluerussian · 25/01/2020 01:52

I love Call the Midwife and am enjoying the new series.

One thing that strikes me is how good the midwives are at home births, they really allow the mother to take the lead and are so versatile.

stumbledin · 25/01/2020 21:18

I thought the last episode was one of the worst. Totally lacking in the depth of the original series. Just script by numbers.

However, reading this thread about that episode has been a real treat!
