They're mumbling.

Ffs.

They can hear it three houses away. The telly is up at 11. Still can't hear a damn thing.

Is this what pay my tv licence fee for?!

Nope too dark and gloomy no light. Cannot hear it absolutely awful. Tosh cannot believe ir has had good reviews.

It's a shame as I was really looking forward to it and had bedded down into the sofa with Christmas fayre. Hmm

CoolCarrie · 23/12/2019 21:58

I think am going to watch the Albert Finney musical version tomorrow as an antidote to this , at least that has good songs.

xmassquared · 23/12/2019 21:59

I'm sorry but they have completely defiled "A Christmas Carol". They really didn't have to make him that reprehensible.

CoolCarrie · 23/12/2019 22:00

I agree and look what they are doing to Dracula next

xmassquared · 23/12/2019 22:02

Oh, I really hope they don't trash Dracula because I'm looking forward to that. Really like the Louis Jourdain one, so it will be interesting to see how this fares.

Saucery · 23/12/2019 22:02

But Scrooge is reprehensible! Whether he is redeemable is another matter.

Took a while to get into it but that second episode...wow!

Dinoctoblock · 23/12/2019 22:02

I might be being dense or naive or something, is he expecting to have sex with her for that money? Or am I getting the wrong end of the stick?

If he is, I they have taken the bleakness too far.

CoolCarrie · 23/12/2019 22:02

Did anyone else notice that it’s Tom Hardy’s Production company that made this?

CoolCarrie · 23/12/2019 22:04

Dino, I think he is and frankly I don’t think Dickens would be happy

Saucery · 23/12/2019 22:04

Yes, hence the rumours that he was actually going to be in it. His wife is, but he isn’t.

xmassquared · 23/12/2019 22:05

Maybe Saucery, but having him proposition Mrs Cratchett for sexual favours is a step too far.

Leflic · 23/12/2019 22:05

It’s like the Handmades Tale of a Christmas Carol. It’s fab.

Of course he’d be a nasty bastard

I’m guessing Dickens generation had different standards of misogyny but a modern version is allowed to portray men as they are now.

Chienloup · 23/12/2019 22:08

I think Dickens would approve. He wrote what he was able to at the time, his writing was seen as a mirror to society. If he was writing now, he most certainly would address these very themes.

Saucery · 23/12/2019 22:09

I disagree, xmassquared. Dickens knew full well how women and girls were trapped and used in that society, even if he couldn’t couch it in the terms we can today.
Scrooge has become so sanitised that a serious interpretation of it needs to put his fall in terms we find distasteful or it just becomes cutesy and trite, which it was never meant to be.
I think it’s really interesting to see how his miserable isolation is being tied into his own feelings and past actions. He’s doing that to himself as a punishment, which he doesn’t even realise until the supernatural element rocks up to spell it out for him.

BillywilliamV · 23/12/2019 22:11

Can't see him becoming a second father to Tiny Tim after this!
Maybe she just had to show up. Maybe they won't actually do the businesd

BillywilliamV · 23/12/2019 22:12

And yes,I think Dickens would love this..

CaptainMyCaptain · 23/12/2019 22:13

Dickens knew full well how women and girls were trapped and used in that society
Particularly as Dickens himself set up home with his mistress and abandoned his wife.

xmassquared · 23/12/2019 22:13

Well, I think we'll have to agree to disagree. I can't see how his and Bob Cratchett's relationship will develop into anything positive by the end. Still think they should have left Mrs Cratchett alone.

Saucery · 23/12/2019 22:14

Got to hand it to Dickens though - still provoking debate on social ills all these years later Grin

herecomesthsun · 23/12/2019 22:15

IIRC, 1 in 8 women in Victorian London may have resorted to selling sex (in an age when women couldn't work and there wasn't really a benefits system). Just saying.

Piggywaspushed · 23/12/2019 22:16

It's CRATCHIT...!

Powerplant · 23/12/2019 22:16

Much better 2nd episode and think the mumbling has reduced a bit or I m getting better at lip reading

xmassquared · 23/12/2019 22:18

I hope she does tell him to go to hell.. maybe that's what that clip afterwards showed.

When Dickensian was shown a couple of years ago, Mrs Cratchett was propositioned by Marley.

xmassquared · 23/12/2019 22:19

@Piggywaspushed Cratchett Cratchett Cratchett.
