They're mumbling.

Ffs.

They can hear it three houses away. The telly is up at 11. Still can't hear a damn thing.

Is this what pay my tv licence fee for?!

There was the joke about Martha at the end where Scrooge said 'whoever you are'. Obviously a cast in joke but I remain confused there!

Piggywaspushed · 26/12/2019 21:43

I don't understand the pc nonsense comment Arnold. Dickens is probably the overlord of PC.

My year 10s will be most aggrieved by the absence of the Littlest Cratchits. Dickens has taught them the word ubiquitous. More like invisible!

Fishcakey · 26/12/2019 21:49

I enjoyed the Last episode, was downright cross at the second. Talk about taking liberties with the story!

RoseMartha · 26/12/2019 22:38

I quite enjoyed it but the screen was very dark which annoyed me a bit. The first part was slow but it got better as it went on. I don't think they deviated too much from original plot.

However the musical versions are a bit more light and not so heavy going and I would choose to watch these over the new version.

BillywilliamV · 26/12/2019 22:40

My 14yo GCSE student and I loved it, though would have liked him to go to Fred’s.

daisypond · 26/12/2019 22:40

They deviated a lot from the original plot! But it all worked, so I was fine with it.

Equanimitas · 26/12/2019 22:43

I suspect people who think this is too PC would have thought the same had they been around when the original book first came out.

CoolCarrie · 27/12/2019 00:22

I thought they should have gone on to Christmas with Fred and his family too.

Clawdy · 27/12/2019 12:33

Felt a bit sorry for the actor playing Fred - imagine being told "You've got the part of Scrooge's nephew! " then you appear in one small scene, and aren't seen again!

Piggywaspushed · 27/12/2019 13:15

I suspect quite a lot of material ended up o the cutting room floor. Martha's sudden appearance made no sense either.

woodhill · 27/12/2019 14:40

Yes I would have liked more with Fred, especially when his mother? was Christmas present.

I felt all the mine stuff was superfluous and there was too much of Jane.

Piggywaspushed · 27/12/2019 14:51

Jane??

Do you mean Mary??

MrsPworkingmummy · 27/12/2019 14:56

My husband and I thought it was fantastic. We didn't pick up on mumbling? Just thought it was a thoughtful modernised interpretation.

Drabarni · 27/12/2019 14:59

Me and dh loved this too. It did start off very quietly and mumbling was a bit rubbish. The first episode was very slow and we thought we'd try the first bit of the second part, but it got better and then we were hooked.

woodhill · 27/12/2019 15:02

I mean Mary😊

Piggywaspushed · 27/12/2019 15:25

Well, it was a made up name anyway!! Grin

Ginger1982 · 27/12/2019 15:32

So odd. An Aussie Scrooge was a bit odd to start with and loads of characters were underused. I wasn't convinced by Scrooge's sudden change of heart either.

Poor Guy Pearce. Despite his Hollywood career, DH looked up at one point when it started and said, 'is that Mike from Neighbours?'

Footle · 27/12/2019 16:54

I loved it. I'm old, btw.
And I'm pretty sure they hadn't thought of putting the clocks back an hour in wintertime in those days.

woodhill · 27/12/2019 17:07

He's definitely Mike and you could hear his accent

Trewser · 27/12/2019 17:19

Thought it was awful. But then I think all those bbc remakes are shite. The Muppet version was a hundred times better!

The80sweregreat · 27/12/2019 19:04

Not seen the muppets one but people rate it and Michael Caine!
I'll have to see it one day.

DarlingNikita · 27/12/2019 19:23

Martha's sudden appearance made no sense either. She clearly introduced herself as being widowed and said she’d had many Xmas invitations and was glad she’d chosen theirs to say yes to. I assumed she was a neighbour/friend who they’d invited to share Xmas dinner.

I really liked this. liked how sour it was ( no forgiveness or Xmas dinner for Scrooge!), the sweariness and the flashes of humour. loved the ghost of Xmas past burning old Xmas trees, the pissing on Marley’s grave every year, Scrooge’s sister and her gun...

EstebanTheMagnificent · 27/12/2019 19:25

Martha was shown to be present at Tim’s birth.

Clawdy · 27/12/2019 20:00

For some reason, I assumed Martha was Mary's sister.

Piggywaspushed · 27/12/2019 20:02

I did too or her daughter. I am not sure I was always paying attention....
