Yes it is extraordinary that posters reckon they don't do tabloid style journalism in America

I knowHmm

I wish Joan Rivers was still alive, she'd have had something to say Wink

SenecaFalls · 25/10/2019 19:03

I didn't say they don't do tabloid journalism in the US. But it is in no way at the level of coverage and targeted negativity against particular individuals as it is in the UK. And it is definitely not as mainstream. That is just a fact.

Blingandrings · 25/10/2019 19:16

Thomas had also been taking money from Meghan for some time. He wrote to her asking for more money I think the run up to the engagement. So that was probably embarrassing too.

FiveTwoFaster · 25/10/2019 19:23

The Queen already knew Major Ferguson very well, and also Camilla’s parents from when he was in the Household Division and of course Diana’s family were friends with the Royals from Norfolk. Sophie’s father was invited to Ascot by HMQ. The Middletons are more publicly around probably as babysitters when their nanny is off but on the whole Mr Markle senior (architect of his own destiny) has been treated differently. Doria has been fab and I think welcomed?

BertrandRussell · 25/10/2019 19:24

I think the main difference between American and British tabloids is that there is much less crossover. America has nothing like the Daily Mail, for example, which presents itself as a serious newspaper, but has the most gossipy, vile “celebrity” stories as well. The gossip gets given some credibility because people can say it’s a proper newspaper, not a Take A Break type rag. The distinction is much clearer in the States.

GlitteryNow · 25/10/2019 19:51

'The gossip gets given some credibility because people can say it’s a proper newspaper, not a Take A Break type rag. The distinction is much clearer in the States.'

Fascinating. When did you live there? I've always thought American culture is much more gossipy and critical than ours, but I'm just speculating on what I've seen with links to American journalists on news programmes.

derxa · 25/10/2019 19:53

Probably but if you're a millionaire do you really leave your father living in poverty? I'm sure Mr Markle is a bit of a panhandler but...
MN is forever talking about going NC but in 'real life' people just deal with their annoying and embarrassing relatives. I think Meghan thought her father was just baggage to be jettisoned.

Blingandrings · 25/10/2019 19:54

Who says she's a millionaire though? I keep reading this, but where's the evidence?

CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook · 25/10/2019 19:56

Take a Break's alright actually. Bit of drama, bit of obvious gossip interposed by a few fluffy ahhh stories, one page of woo, a couple of small prize winning puzzles ,bit of (actually affordable) fashion all very distracting but ultimately forgettable. I would also say it's value for money.

Nothing as sinister as DF.

SenecaFalls · 25/10/2019 20:08

I've always thought American culture is much more gossipy and critical than ours, but I'm just speculating on what I've seen with links to American journalists on news programmes.

The media landscape is very different in the two countries. FWIW, I'm American, but I have lived in the UK. There is no "mainstream" media outlet that would be considered gossipy and critical. And certainly none that would be engaged in riling up the citizenry against particular individuals that certainly appears to be part of the agenda in the UK.

Another thing that seems odd to Americans when visiting the UK. The morning talk shows display the newspaper headlines, including the tabloids. That emphasizes how much these papers are part of the culture and the national conversation. It's very different in the States.

FiveTwoFaster · 25/10/2019 20:14

Is the DM essentially the newspaper equivalent of Fox News?

BeaCalm · 25/10/2019 22:01

I don't think MM was a millionaire, was she? She was a jobbing actress (nothing wrong with that before Bert pounces) and was earning (I believe) $500k a year on Suits. Now thats a lot to me but after taxes, agent's cut, living costs, etc I doubt there'd be enough left over to invest to turn it into real wealth.

SenecaFalls · 25/10/2019 22:33

Her net worth was well over a million. I think I have seen estimates at about 5 million. That's really not all that hard to do with a long-term gig like Suits.

SenecaFalls · 25/10/2019 22:36

Like a lot of high earners, she was likely socking a large portion away in pre-tax retirement accounts.

Notmyrealname855 · 26/10/2019 00:39

Hello! We’re both still online but she’s wfh today (has been this busy for the last week sadly).

So we’ve read your comments and she was going to set up an account but says she won’t use MN. I now feel bad for bothering to involve her as obviously she’s “immature” etc and I didn’t realise her opinion doesn’t count. Good to know some posters get to decide on who has a valuable opinion and who doesn’t. She’s sent me an IM and I’m copying it below - she’s not checking the thread again, on account of her being immature and not having a valid opinion etc etc. We don’t want to interrupt the clever and valid people! She’s just turned 25 btw.

Thank you for discounting me and my opinion, next time I hear a brown girl talking about mumsnet Ill tell them not to bother as ‘I don't think her opinions or their sources are really worth delving into at all’.Im the average London 20 something. Ive got family in three countries in the commonwealth. who else are they supposed to be targeted at. Theyre the same as the rest of the royals - thats the problem!!!! Theyre doing another empire and calling it a foundation. Its more rich people not helping. Its more of the same when we were promised something new. They are cringey and try to be ‘down with the kids’. It doesnt feel respectful and were all working so hard just to get first experience and get any jobs. And all their pr is on them. They both went to posh schools and lived posh lives and they dont really care about real people. why wouldnt they just give some money away and stop doing flashy things if they were genuine. They started off ok but they are so flashy and then preach to us. And in south Africa. Do they know how half of London lives. Id like to offset and jet but I cant.was really into it at first but whats the point when theyre all the same. And Id also like their education and healthcare and free housing and free transport.knowing their kids are set for life but I cant afford any. And there are proper experts who should be given that platform but you never hear about the . Anyways I always appreciate a slap down from strangers on the internet and always from the internet police so sound intolerant as [bleep]

Back to me - yeah I agree. I removed the bleep as it’s worse than you think Grin and I agree with her on a lot. Now waiting to be told how that’s wrong and no everything’s ok on this thought police thread and especially enjoy calling first generation minorities from Whitechapel racists and don’t forget to call them immature too Grin One thing both of us agree on is the best thing to do would be to wind up the monarchy - if this is “modernising” then it looks a hell of a lot like “business as usual”.

Notmyrealname855 · 26/10/2019 00:49

Oh I forgot! I asked this morning if she uses Tumblr and she said “no I’m not a furry”. So taking that as a no...

CallmeAngelina · 26/10/2019 07:22

Eh?
Notmyrealname What was all that about? You on the right thread?

GoFiguire · 26/10/2019 07:34

It’s alright @Notmyrealname855 I’m already on here and if I can cope with Harvey then I can cope with MN.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 26/10/2019 08:07

I think your friend's perspective is worth hearing. She seems to tick all the target audience boxes. What are her thoughts on HM the Queen, out of interest?

BertrandRussell · 26/10/2019 08:45

Interestingly, my own dd and her friends and workmates, feminists and republicans to a woman, are all Meghan fans.

GlitteryNow · 26/10/2019 10:13

'you can't have a discussion about female empowerment without having a man present so thankyou for letting him crash the party'

On twitter from their latest engagement. It's like Harry is now M's PA. Why do they do this cheesy crap. They don't seem like equals at all. It's the MM show, like she is using the Royal platform to perform and no that's nothing to do with the being either an American or biracial.

BeaCalm · 26/10/2019 10:15

Notmyrealname855

Huh? Confused

GlitchStitch · 26/10/2019 10:30

Notmyrealname if your colleague wanted to be taken seriously she could post on MN herself? I don't disagree with some of her views but I'm not sure why you think posters should have a 3 way discussion with someone who 'won't use MN,' via you. It's the equivalent of 'I've just asked my DH and he says...'

Blingandrings · 26/10/2019 10:45

@BertrandRussell
Mine don’t know who she is and don’t care! I think the RF are an irrelevance to most young people.

MissEliza · 26/10/2019 11:15

@GlitteryNow She said she 'let him join today'. How patronising. Imagine a man saying he 'let' his wife do something.
