Of course there have been racist posts... but very, very few on MN. Yet still a couple or so posters bang on and on and on about this issue. To my mind it says more about them than anything else. Meghan is their excuse - and gift - to wear their woke credentials on their sleeve and berate perfectly decent posters who are simply saying they find a few behaviours irritating . If they were more reasoned, eg "Yes, the baby shower was a bit OTT but..." or "the South African interview was rather ill-judged but..." then I'd have more regard for their points, but a blanket (faux?)) worship, coupled with constant superiority and insults levelled at all other posters is just one-note political stuff which is boring.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 25/10/2019 09:51

I think Notmyrealname855's friend has a point actually. Fair enough, Harry is in his mid thirties. Meghan is not far off forty. She's not young by any stretch.

MissEliza · 25/10/2019 11:08

I was a bit bemused to read Kate was buying costumes In Sainsbury's. Isn't that kind of thing right up Granny Carole's street? Surely she'd be running them up a bespoke costume?

Encyclo · 25/10/2019 11:20

I was coming on here to say that Kate's costume buying in Sainsbury's is hilarious. Bit like the Flybe flights right after the private jet kerfuffle.

"Relatable Kate" 🤔🤔

If Harry had married a blonde, blue eyed American who behaved in the same way there would still be critics.

Do you really believe this? I don't think ALL the criticism is racist but a percentage of it is, in the same way a percentage of it is because she is a divorcee, American, from a dysfunctional family. All of these things individually contribute to an overall major backlash.

Had she have been blonde and blue eyed it would have made things easier, but yes she still would have suffered.

I'll never forget the headline 'straight outta compton'. She was bought up on LA but somehow because she's half black was associated with one of the worst ghetto gang areas in the world. This is the type of stereotyping of blacks that IS racist. The ignorance to acknowledge it makes you a part of the problem.

Hey1256 · 25/10/2019 11:38

Just had a quick google and here are just a few of the things Meghan has been labelled;

‘Jungle fever,’ ‘gold digger,’ ‘biracial commoner,’ ‘whitest black girl’ and ‘unsuitable’ all flashed up on the screen during the broadcast.

None of these are racist are they Hmm

These are fringe loonies though @joyfulhippo. They aren't representative of most people who have reservations about Meghan.

SenecaFalls · 25/10/2019 11:50

Her gist is they’re old and cringe.

The fact that she has ageist attitudes says it all really. I don't think her opinions or their sources are really worth delving into at all.

I genuinely don't think younger people even know who most of the Royals are. They don't care and don't follow them. In 20 years most of the population will barely know who the Monarch is in my view.

TheOliphantintheRoom · 25/10/2019 12:10

Charlie is on itv tonight talking about his own private cash machine , the duchy of Cornwall
Grin

I wish Meghan would stop hugging people on official engagements.

SenecaFalls · 25/10/2019 12:11

But it doesn't have to be overt to have racist origins. My concern is that there is a substantial amount of media coverage and commentary that is designed to appeal to a certain segment of the population in the UK, some of the same people whose racist and xenophobic attitudes helped fuel Brexit. Media aimed to appeal to this segment often targets Meghan with criticism that might not be overtly racist, but that in many cases has dubious origins and might be outright lies from the so-called sources. Why are they doing that? It then helps create negative perceptions of Meghan in the wider public which build among people who are not racists but have consumed media and picked up attitudes from content that has dubious original motivations.

Also If you don't think there is much racism on MN, just search for threads on golliwogs, Serena Williams, and, the one that shocked me the most, defense of displaying the Confederate flag in the UK.

At the risk of getting a bit academic, perhaps check out "structural racism" and if you really want to take a deep dive "critical race theory."

BertrandRussell · 25/10/2019 12:14

Of course not all the Meghan criticism is racist. Some of it is xenophobic, some of it is misogynist/anti feminist, some of it is the usual “cut down the tall poppy” thing that we Brits are so good at. But it is undeniable that she gets more criticism for doing the normal things that rich, privileged people do. And some some of the things she has been criticised for have been shown to be untrue, or inaccurate or downright bizarre but are continually repeated despite that. There has to be a reason for that. I find myself, as an “off with their heads” republican, defending a member of the RF- which is weird. And I am not alone in this. Which suggests that there is something “off” in the criticism, surely?

'Some of it is xenophobic, some of it is misogynist/anti feminist, some of it is the usual “cut down the tall poppy” thing that we Brits are so good at.'

There are internet trolls, of course there are. However some of the criticism is true, that is an inconvenient truth. They should not have used the platform of their Africa tour to air their woes. They should've made visiting her df a priority before their TV interview, she shouldn't have allowed her friends to make comments in People magazine about her personal problems with her df then complain when he released a letter. These things have made them unpopular because they seem hypocritical.

They need to stop reading the tabloids, shut up and just carry on doing their job.

MrsPellegrinoPetrichor · 25/10/2019 13:25

Or it might be that she's just annoying and needs to stop over sharing and complaining? That goes for both of them tbh!

BertrandRussell · 25/10/2019 13:28

“Or it might be that she's just annoying and needs to stop over sharing and complaining?”

But she wasn’t doing that at the beginning, was she? Or was she?

MrsPellegrinoPetrichor · 25/10/2019 13:32

The engagement interview made me want to throw cushions at the telly.

justasking111 · 25/10/2019 13:35

The only reason she has not been criticised for the purple skirt she wore today is because the queen of Spain wore it yesterday.

I have seen awful racist/sexual stuff on twitter, FB, comments sections in the media, truly arrestable if you said it to someone`s face in this country. But not on mumsnet.

SenecaFalls · 25/10/2019 13:42

The engagement interview made me want to throw cushions at the telly.

Exactly how was she oversharing and complaining in that interview?

BertrandRussell · 25/10/2019 13:43

“ The engagement interview made me want to throw cushions at the telly.”

I thought it was quite sweet!

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 25/10/2019 13:53

The engagement interview made me want to throw cushions at the telly.

Me too. That was the beginning of my epiphany really. Everything else has just confirmed what I learned about her from that performance.

BertrandRussell · 25/10/2019 13:55

What on Earth was wrong with rhe engagement interview?
No, she didn’t say she didn’t know who Harry was

GlitteryNow · 25/10/2019 13:55

'Exactly how was she oversharing and complaining in that interview?'

She actually came across well imo, they were popular then. Millions watched the wedding, many people felt optimistic that they'd be this much hoped for 'breath of fresh air'. It's obviously been downhill at a rate of knots ever since as the reality didn't match the expectation.

I thought it was so odd that they hadn't been to her Dad's before they had the interview, it seemed an extraordinary faux pas. He was just expected to pitch up at this massive event without any kind of preparation or been given the chance to develop a relationship with Harry.
