I really enjoyed this first ep. Especially Taki stabbing a boy in the thigh for putting his hand up her skirt, and the comment from her granddad that he was lucky to keep his cock.

I will be watching again, I think it's great, sort of Japanese/British Noir.

Definitely cannycat. I think he wrote Flowers too.

Loved it, I so wanted to watch weekly but I had to binge it was so good. I might rewatch. Fantastic music too.

Fatshedra · 11/11/2019 06:53

@Fatshedra is that really the only comment you can make

To be honest I missed a lot of the dialogue as I was hobbying as well as watching and the subtitles were too fast for me to follow. Which is probably why I didn't really get into it. What I did see seemed a bit far fetched. Will watch it again properly.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 11/11/2019 14:10

I thought it was pure genius. One of the best TV shows I've seen in a very long time.

mizu · 11/11/2019 20:25

Finally finished and LOVED it. Almost in tears watching the dance - and I rarely cry. It was such a fabulous series, especially the last 2 episodes. The scenes with the three women in the car with the baby were amazing.

AnnaNimmity · 11/11/2019 22:08

Oh the roof top scene was so moving. Loved it.

Very good - best thing I've watched in months.

AnyFucker · 11/11/2019 22:15

Loved this.

Rodney made me laugh, and cry.

ColonelCathcart · 11/11/2019 22:54

Do you think the Japanese actors all follow the Asian skincare regimes that people talk about on the Style & Beauty boards? The actor playing Yuto is 40! Shock

AnyFucker · 11/11/2019 23:04

Just watched the 1st episode of Flowers recommended on this thread

It's err, unusual Grin

DappledThings · 11/11/2019 23:09

Stick with it AnyFucker, it gets seriously weirder but completely compelling and the ends of both series had me sobbing.

QueenOfTheAndals · 11/11/2019 23:15

I know @ColonelCathcart, I'm fully expecting to read that the actress playing Taki is 35!

AnyFucker · 11/11/2019 23:21

I will give it a go, DT

I like the actor who plays the son (in Flowers). He acts about 9yo and is actually about 39 Smile Olivia Colman superb as ever.

DappledThings · 11/11/2019 23:24

I think him and Will Sharpe must be friends, he also turns up in an episode of Defending The Guilty

Fatshedra · 12/11/2019 08:12

I loved flowers.

CruCru · 12/11/2019 09:29

Do you think they’ll make a second series? I couldn’t decide whether Yuto meeting Eiko in Paris was real or a fantasy.

CruCru · 12/11/2019 09:31

I think they may just be blessed ColonelCathcart. The actor playing Yuto used to be a model.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 12/11/2019 17:16

I took it to be real that Yuto did meet Eiko in Paris - they were the only ones who really got a 'happy ever after'. Not sure it would be good to do a second series as it would run the risk of not being as good as the first (thinking of Broadchurch!!!)

Igottastartthinkingbee · 12/11/2019 22:36

Oh wow this was fab. I am ever so slightly in love with the actor who played Kenzo, I was willing him and Sarah to have a happy ending. I know that was never really going to happen! The bit with Roy in the final episode had me 😮 and 😂

ColonelCathcart · 12/11/2019 23:27

I was really worried Yuto was going to be gunned down when walking towards Eiko in Paris.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 13/11/2019 09:44

Suspect they chose Paris as a trouble-free haven (for them).

CruCru · 13/11/2019 10:11

I don’t think Kenzo and Sarah end up together. At the very end he had the sort of expression that makes me think he was breaking up with her.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 13/11/2019 10:54

No, it didn't seem likely that they would end up together, although I did like that Kenzo said that his relationship with Sarah had meant something (rather than just being a fling). I guess that would appeal to the Japanese audience given how strong is their belief in being honourable.

There were so many themes in the drama - it was rather like a Shakespearean play but with tragedy, comedy etc...all rolled into the one story.

DappledThings · 13/11/2019 11:58

Just having a sandwich and coffee in the cafe where Sarah and Kenzo talked in episode 2!

ArcheryAnnie · 13/11/2019 12:12

DappledThings which one is that?

I spotted: The Espresso Room in New Row in Covent Garden (where Sarah and ex were getting takeaway coffees) and The Rosemary Branch in Hoxton (where Sarah and ex were negotiating whether he'd rat her out or not, with Taki eavesdropping).

DappledThings · 13/11/2019 13:50

It's part of UCL where all the university bits were filmed.

Igottastartthinkingbee · 13/11/2019 15:01

Kenzo and Sarah don’t end up together, she asks him ‘what happens next’ or words to that effect and Taki replies from the jukebox (in Japanese) ‘It’s finished’. I thought it was more like a play than tv at times. The parallels between scenes and the dance on the roof. Such an unusual show. Loved it.
