I really enjoyed this first ep. Especially Taki stabbing a boy in the thigh for putting his hand up her skirt, and the comment from her granddad that he was lucky to keep his cock.

I will be watching again, I think it's great, sort of Japanese/British Noir.

Where is Sarah's house? I wondered that.

Spotted the Rosemary Branch! DP and I have been there a few times.

AnyFucker · 13/11/2019 21:26

Well, who bloody recommended "Flowers" on this thread.

I am BAWLING.

AnnaNimmity · 13/11/2019 21:32

Really? is it good? Where can I watch it?

(I read your first post on it AF and decided to avoid it...)

DappledThings · 13/11/2019 21:55

I did warn you I sobbed AnyFucker!

I might watch it again soon

AnyFucker · 13/11/2019 23:06

Anna, there are 2 seasons on Netflix

Will Sharpe is quite brilliant and the acting by everyone is just sublime. More than just a dark, dark comedy. The best thing I have seen for a while.

CruCru · 13/11/2019 23:35

I’ve just rewatched the end. Kenzo tells her that is is going to hand him in to the police in the UK.

WhereShallWeGo · 14/11/2019 11:40

Just found that they put interviews with casts. Interesting to read if you haven’t yet. www.bbc.co.uk/mediacentre/mediapacks/girihaji/takehiro

CruCru · 15/11/2019 09:49

That’s interesting - the actor playing Yuto hopes that there’ll be a second series.

QueenOfTheAndals · 15/11/2019 10:14

That's interesting though I'm not sure where a second series could go.

And speaking of the actors who look young, the guy playing Eko's dad was born in 1965!

CruCru · 15/11/2019 10:33

Hmm - Kenzo goes to prison for a couple of years then the series starts when he gets out. Because he’s been in prison, it’s been Yuto’s job to look after the family but he can’t go back to Japan or the UK. Taki is living in London, going to art school (?) and Rodney is working in a bar (?). Abbott decides that he needs to finish the unfinished business and hires someone to find Yuto.

Or something like that.

flowerycurtain · 15/11/2019 21:54

Loved loved loved this. The dance. Rodney. Oh it was brilliant.

tomboytown · 17/11/2019 13:35

That dance at the end was amazing!

Hated the violence, loved all of the main characters.

Will sharpe as Rodney- brilliant. He was in Defending the guilty recently, such a different character. I'd recommend watching that. Not your normal court/legal drama

drspouse · 19/11/2019 21:33

I am on episode 7 and the mum/granny/girlfriend are awesome. And the traffic cop.

Cooroo · 22/11/2019 23:58

Just watched first episode of Flowers - brilliant! Utterly bizarre but I'm hooked. Thanks for the tip.

ArcheryAnnie · 25/11/2019 11:58

drspouse I loved the traffic cop, was devastated at the end.

DoctorTwo · 28/11/2019 22:36

I'm happy you all loved the show as much as I did. Best thing on terrestrial tv since
The Killing

I binged all the episodes the first weekend and I absolutely adored it. So refreshing and different. Will Sharp was magnificent and to me was the star of the show.
Reading this thread has made me want to go back and watch it again.

HoofWankingSpangleCunt · 28/11/2019 22:50

I agree, best thing on telly for a long, long time.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 29/11/2019 07:36

I would say it was unique. Agree about Will Sharp but I thought the cast was very strong generally. Loved the semi-comedic women's roadtrip scenes back in Japan too.

stumbledin · 05/12/2019 23:03

I'm sorry there wasn't an episode by episode thread on this as there were so many levels to it would have liked to be able to discuss each one.

A lot of the references and intertwining of the stories I didn't always get.

And am not sure about the ending.

Or the poetic dancing.

I also wonder whether it has been shown in Japan and if so what they thought of it.

I suspect that for film buffs a lot of the shots and sequences were refences to "respected" films, but I thought visually it was really interesting.

I now wonder if I had binge watched it whether I would have maybe understood the storyline better but missed out on some films style.

Was it in fact just an homage to a strand of film making?

Snugglepiggy · 06/12/2019 07:01

I absolutely was blown away by this.We nearly missed it.Shows how the critics can be so wrong.Early on I read the one in the Guardian -not my regular paper -but was checking out reviews on line and it was pretty scathing, calling it 'all killer but no thriller '.And a bore. What the heck?!So glad we decided to binge watch it this week. The best thing on TV for a long time. And the characters will be in my head for ages. Especially Rodney.Did his mum really even care?I'm usually unable to watch anything with violence and stuck with it,but this just drew me in from the start.

stumbledin · 06/12/2019 13:51

I nearly stopped watching because of the body count but stuck with it, partly because there doesn't seem to be anything worth watching at the moment.

But because it was quite different in a lot of ways, I was interested a lot of time.

But was trying to work out whether it was actually saying anything differnt or I was distracted by how it was shot.

But then as I said up thread, I dont always follow plots well so would have loved a thread where others could point out the things I missed!

(Do think generally when there is the option to stream and watch week by week need different threads, one for plodders like me and one for those who zip through.)

DarlingNikita · 08/12/2019 11:17

Just finished it last night. I thought it was exceptional. So, so original. Funny, humane, sad, horribly (but justifiedly) violent, surprising... The dance scene was audacious and wonderful. Expressed so clearly everyone's characters and feelings. The cinematography was breathtaking. The acting phenomenal (Taki was particularly good, and Will Sharpe as Rodney – what a character). I LOVED the women's car scenes; outstanding acting and dialogue.

It seems to have gone largely under the radar Confused A real pity; it's one of the best things I've watched in ages.

MinesaPinot · 09/12/2019 13:56

DH and I finished this at the weekend and both agreed it was one of the best things we had seen in a long time. Loved the whole series, the way it was shot, the interaction between the characters and thought the acting was very strong, particularly Will Sharpe as Rodney. And the Dance was inspired, really encapsulated the emotional turmoil which rang through the whole series.

We both said we could quite happily watch the whole series again, and may well do that over Christmas.

DarlingNikita · 09/12/2019 16:04

I'd love to watch it again as a binge. It was so beautiful.
