I watched this last night and thought it was a completely set up piece of propaganda.
All the cliches: processed food, too much sugar, fat, salt etc. minimal fruit and vegetables plus type II diabetes AND she was a nurse!
Zero credibility.

Lunde · 17/10/2019 16:05

I see what you mean about it being a bit extreme. However my parents (at 65 and 58) were a lot like this (on a slightly lesser scale) after my dad was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes because they were in complete denial about their eating habits and could not face changing what they had always cooked.

So they would tell the hospital that they were cooking from scratch and eating "healthy" stir-frys with chicken and veg . but totally neglected to mention the jar of Uncle Ben's Sweet and Sour sauce the used and that was packed with sugar. They would say that they ate berries that they picked themselves .... but didn't say that they made them into jam!

I also met a woman in similar denial in my ante-natal group. She wouldn't control her diet so in the end had to be given insulin. But was eating lots of cream cakes, biscuits and sweets because her blood sugar levels were "normal". In the end she had to be induced at 35 weeks because her baby was already over 10lbs and not doing well.

I do wonder if this couple applied themselves or whether a family member tried to give them a nudge.

lastqueenofscotland · 17/10/2019 21:52

My gosh their diet was one of the worst I’ve seen on this show ever

IHaveBrilloHair · 17/10/2019 23:07

Shitting hell, I'm watching now and I'm gobsmacked, I thought they were in their 70's.

Startoftheyear2019 · 17/10/2019 23:22

Finally, someone asking the right question - with all the crap they were eating, at did they ever go to the toilet!!?

megletthesecond · 17/10/2019 23:26

start I had a colleague who ate like this once. She overshared with me that she only went to the loo (number 2's) a couple of times a week. To be fair, she knew it wasn't great.

IHaveBrilloHair · 17/10/2019 23:32

I'd never be off the toilet if I ate that much sugar, but tbf I have IBS!

longwayoff · 18/10/2019 06:35

I buy real baked beans take two thirds out of the can and wash the sauce off then mix them with the remainder. Heat them all up, tastes fine to me. Takes a lot of the sugar out. Low sugar and salt beans are vile, rather have none at all. But crikey, the sweet cupboard! The fizzy stuff! Phew.

Blondeshavemorefun · 18/10/2019 08:25

You wash the sauce off beans ?

OP posts:
longwayoff · 18/10/2019 09:46

I do. In a sieve, not one by one Grin. They're swimming in sauce and two thirds of it isn't missed, well not by me. Much less sugar.

Lunde · 18/10/2019 13:04

Why don't you just buy tinned haricot beans in water?

Blondeshavemorefun · 18/10/2019 13:32

I used to always be a Heinz beans and nothing taker

But I do like Aldi beans and 89p for 4 compete for Heinz that I think are £3 for 4

Just had some now on a jacket

Skyejuly · 18/10/2019 13:44

I prefer aldi beans.

longwayoff · 18/10/2019 14:01

@Lunde, because I want baked beans cooked in sauce. But I don't want to eat all the sauce that they come with, just enough to flavour them. Currently eating a Heck chicken sausage and small tin of -adjusted- waitrose essential baked beans. Nice.

BooksAreMyOnlyFriends · 18/10/2019 14:19

Morrisons beans are the bees knees

BooksAreMyOnlyFriends · 18/10/2019 14:21

Sainsbury's Heck chicken sausage shelf has been empty for 2 days ☹.
They must be selling bumper amounts at the moment.

longwayoff · 18/10/2019 15:41

Grin whilst I was emptying the chicken sausage shelves in Sainsbury's I noticed they make veggie breakfast sausages. I have a pack of tomato, mushroom and spinach, haven't tried them yet. There was another variety too but cant recall ingredients.

JustDanceAddict · 18/10/2019 16:28

longwayoff they sound yum

ny20005 · 18/10/2019 20:08

Wow ! I've got a sweet tooth but watching that made me feel sick 🤢

I felt so sorry for that poor man, he had to eat what she cooked. Rita was like a petulant toddler !

I really hope they made changes & stuck to them

bookwormsforever · 18/10/2019 22:49

That was bonkers. What kind of nurse is she??

Then she rings Gregg for help then has to go to the supermarket and buy a trolley of sugar - what happens to the food? Do they take it back?

She hasn’t cooked for 37 years - wtf??

DettolObsessed · 18/10/2019 23:05

Utterly shocked at that. The amount of sweeties they eat is crazy! I didn't really like the look of that peach and oat bake thingy (that Chris did in the caravan). Looks dry and definitely needed custard Envy
