Am glad! It didn’t deserve another series!

Kit19 · 05/12/2019 18:56

Ooooh!! My friend went to hear andrew Davies talk the other week & he said a second series was dependent on the American ratings. They get it in January.

JaneJeffer · 07/12/2019 19:44

Let's hope the Americans watch it without checking the ending first!

Confirmed today by sanditon official twitter that it won’t be renewed

Rhubarb01 · 10/12/2019 19:48

Well it will keep the fanfiction writers busy for years to come, which is ironic as it's already effectively a bit of fanfiction, but so was Fifty Shades of Grey and look what happened to that!

I suppose, the writers can argue that they didn't pander to the JA traditionalists and the ending was poignant but more realistic.

Perhaps Young Stringer and his hat should get a spin-off series.

lululup · 10/12/2019 20:24

I'm gutted. What a shabby way to proceed. Do these TV stations ever really think about who viewers are and what viewers want?

Kit19 · 10/12/2019 20:32

Hahaha yes the fanfic writers will be fixing that ending for years (fanfic squared!!)

Lol the adventures of stringer & his hat

@lululup I think Andrew Davies really thought he’d get a second series. At the talk he did last month he said he’d written it with the assumption of at least one more season

Rhubarb01 · 10/12/2019 20:41

I think the word is already out in the US amongst Austenites that the ending didn't go down very well in the UK. I've seen comments on some US sites expressing apprehension. For all it's faults, I can't help feeling it's a pity they couldn't create a second series, or at least wrap the first one up without the modern twist. A Christmas special finale would have been quite charming. Ah well....

Kit19 · 10/12/2019 21:06

The timing of the announcement is odd - a few weeks before it airs in America. Why would ppl watch something already cancelled

Rhubarb01 · 10/12/2019 21:14

Just saw a twitter comment about the cancellation of Sanditon that made me chuckle. Someone said it was good job ITV didn't film Pride & Prejudice or they'd have married Elizabeth Bennet off to Mr Collins to save money Grin

Kit19 · 10/12/2019 22:01

@rhubarb01

Don’t joke Grin ITV are doing a remake of pride & prejudice.....

JaneJeffer · 11/12/2019 12:47

Really Kit? Can't wait for the thread Grin

I hope Andrew Davies has learned his lesson!

GingerRogers84 · 11/12/2019 18:17

Ahh gutted! It was just a bit of fluffy tv that I enjoyed. Now the purists have got it cancelled! 😭

Seriously, though I neeeed to know how it ends! 😊👀

Kit19 · 11/12/2019 21:19

@GingerRogers84

They lost 1.5 million viewers from episode 1 to episode 4. I think it was just not very well written in common with too many ITV dramas :/

AppleYumYum · 29/12/2019 20:47

Nooooooooo! Oh no just saw the news on this thread, I want to know what happened next! Surely at least an alternative ending was filmed they can show! It wasn't going to win any academy awards but I really enjoyed it on a Sunday night. I was completely taken in by the chemistry between Sidney and Miss Heywood. Meh Sad

Kit19 · 30/12/2019 15:58

@AppleYumYum my friend went to hear Andrew Davies talk before the cancellation was confirmed. He said that his plans for series 2 had Charlotte & Sidney marrying but interestingly he implied they wouldnt necessarily be happy, and probably wouldnt be the main focus for a second series to allow other characters to come to the fore.

Let's hope this year ITV commissioners manage to commission things that last more than one series and dont end on a duff note because of non renewal

RevealTheHiddenBeach · 07/03/2020 18:01

PBS has confirmed no no series :( I blame the bastards who allowed such a shitty ending. It would never have happened on the BBC...

RevealTheHiddenBeach · 07/03/2020 18:02

*no new series

ScreamingValenta2020 · 07/03/2020 18:07

A lesson here for TV scriptwriters - never end series one on the assumption there'll be a series two. Now all ITV's Sanditon will be remembered for is its crap ending.

AppleYumYum · 07/03/2020 18:20

Nooooooooo!

upinaballoon · 18/03/2022 19:46

But apparently there are going to be two more series, made by the Americans. I believe I have seen that it will come to ITV in time. I googled Sanditon. I shouldn't be interested but I am. I must check to see who has written it.

Mumrey · 19/03/2022 19:23

Sanditon S2 begins streaming on BritBox at 9am on Monday 21st March🥳🥳. Will return for S3 next year ! (Already filmed).
Justin Young is Lead Writer and EP

upinaballoon · 20/03/2022 15:06

I haven't got Britbox, and I'm not sure I'll want to watch.GrinGrin I'm afraid I think Andrew Davies is having something to do with it so he might be making a bit of money from it. Damn.

vjg13 · 20/03/2022 15:17

It will be on ITV later this year too.

upinaballoon · 20/03/2022 21:36

I was furious with the first series, but of course I watched it. I wasn't on MN but I made a few cross posts on my friend's computer. So when I was wondering about it I also wondered if there had been an MN thread and I found this and have had a lovely laugh, reading through.
It looks as if she's going to be a governess and meet Mr. Rochester and Jane Fairfax and the army's coming to town so all the boys will have to go skinny dipping with their muskets at the ready and she'll stay quite single for these two series and 3 minutes before the end of the very last episode Tom will say that it's terribly sad that Eliza has died of typhoid and the makers will re-show the shot of Sid driving along the cliff road towards Sandytown, and Charlotte will look happily out of the window and that will be the suitable and happy end, without Theo James having to stir his stumps.

I liked the scene when Miss Lambe nipped off behind the sand dunes, but it was generally a load of old lovely rubbish and a disgrace to trade on Jane Austen's name.
