I'm not inspired by any of them yet. Maybe someone will grow on me. Agree with a PP that there doesn't seem to be the usual age range. social mix etc.

I know this was pages and days ago but:

What is different about Paul's face?? We can't agree!! Different colour? Surgery? Whiter hair?

I think he's had some extra hair put in. Men usually cut it as short as they can when they have it done too, which might explain the lack of spikes.

NigesFakeWalkingStick · 29/08/2019 08:39

@EntirelyAnonymised ah ta thanks. I like Michelle too then Grin

Djangor3725 · 29/08/2019 10:34

I remember in an earlier series that someone was eliminated partly because they had used ready-made (i.e. brought in) fondant. Are they now allowed to do that as I didn't notice anyone making their fondant & most of the contestants seemed to use it instead of other types of icing.

Mammajay · 29/08/2019 11:21

Is it only me who found Paul Hollywood's repeated reference to the girl's furry garden yeuk...he seems so seedy now.

CaptainMyCaptain · 29/08/2019 11:43

You're not the only one Mammajay I can do without the double entendres.

I've been thinking similarly. But then again, as I've said before it's no longer a baking competition.

I hate the idea of contestants being kept in to be mocked. It's not the X factor.

Saucery · 29/08/2019 12:07

I hated that, Mammajay. She’s not in a position to tell him to stop acting like an old creep and fuck off. Creepy bastards pretending to have misheard you is such an old trick.

LemonRedwood · 29/08/2019 12:28

Ah but he just made a stack of biscuits and fondant and called it a rocket. It was rubbish and he deserved to go.

Momniscient · 29/08/2019 12:58

Late to the thread, watching on catch-up! Not loving Henry. Not sure what it is about him, but not my cup of tea. The rest of them are much of a muchness so far... looking forward to knowing them a bit better. Can't understand the vet either - she seems to be speaking at 100mph.

Tonnerre · 29/08/2019 13:09

The fondant thing may depend on the time factor. ISTR they've allowed things like pre-made jam before.

TSSDNCOP · 29/08/2019 13:15

They should have to make everything IMO.

Mary would have put her foot down. No way did that Jamie make that much fondant when he couldn’t even remember to put eggs in his batter.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 29/08/2019 19:21

I liked the early series better.

"Make a sponge"

Award place.

Kitsandkids · 29/08/2019 23:27

It does seem much more important to be really artistic now than it did in early series. It used to be more about getting a really good bake but now having to make it look like some amazing piece of art is also essential.

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 30/08/2019 08:26

Paul wasn't saying furry garden! He was saying fairy garden! Which is roughly what the cake was depicting.

Everyone just (wrongly) took it to be a double entendre.

It's Paul's beard that is different! Instead of just that sexy goatee, it's now more of a very sharply sculpted full stubble-beard.

Also, the moustache area has lost its previous darker colour, and is completely white now.

southeastdweller · 30/08/2019 08:37

I expect he’s been told to say stuff like that, I can’t imagine much of the dialogue from the hosts being spontaneous.

CaptainMyCaptain · 30/08/2019 08:40

I agree that 'fairy' sounds like 'furry' in Paul's Liverpudlian accent but I think it was done on purpose as a, not very funny, joke.

EntirelyAnonymised · 30/08/2019 09:03

Of course it was done on purpose. He was mishearing the contestants pronunciation of ‘fairy’ because of her heavily accented English (let’s gloss over the fact that ‘fairy’ and ‘furry’ sound the same in Paul’s native English accent too though, eh). It’s part of the naff and cringe inducing double-entendre scripts that Bake Off have been running forever. They were always embarrassing in the Mel & Sue day’s but they somehow seem worse coming from him because he’s such a seedy creep who’s convinced of his own irresistibility.

Tonnerre · 31/08/2019 01:37

Wot, no comments on Extra Slice? I think it's a pity they've still got Tom Allen, one series with him was more than enough for me.

NaomiFromMilkShake · 31/08/2019 02:02

Henry reminds me of a very young Philip Schofield. Not totally, I think it is across the eyes.

Wolfcub · 31/08/2019 07:02

I gave up on extra slice after 20 minutes. Tom Allen gets on my last nerve, he just isn’t funny. Even Jo Brand looked bored of him at one point

mydogisthebest · 31/08/2019 08:37

I quite like Tom Allen but he just annoys me on Extra Slice. I thought Dan came across as even more of a nob than he did in Bake Off.

RebootYourEngine · 31/08/2019 08:46

Dan should not have been sent home.

As for Tom Allen. He just spoils every programme that he is on. I am not looking forward to the apprentice, You're fired because he is taking over from Rhod Gilbert.

Piggywaspushed · 31/08/2019 10:54

Awww... I like Tom Allen!

Dan's tattoo was spectacular. I don't like tattoos but that was remarkable!

Saucery · 31/08/2019 11:00

Love Tom Allen! He’s the main reason I watch Extra Slice. Although Scarlett Moffat’s apologetic and genuine heave at the sweet corn cake was the funniest thing on last night’s.
Shame about Dan, he comes across as really genuine and a bit shy. Think he would have done some good stuff if he’d stayed (although the fruit had sunk to the bottom of his cake last night).
