Was it significant that Helen and her mum died the same year I wonder? The #metoo stuff did it just blow over?

Blondeshavemorefun · 07/11/2019 21:56

Well that was bloody brilliant ending and tied up the joanie bits

Well done who said Who ej was

I couldn’t face watching it but heard so much about the finale, I watched some of that after reading synopses.

So I’m not confused, Helen did die young?

I’m not sure if I want to watch the whole season. I struggled with Whitney whenever she was on!

IfOnlyOurEyesSawSouls · 07/11/2019 22:46

Helen was 79 when she died

AutumnRose1 · 07/11/2019 22:51

Ah, I’m confused then.

I might watch it as I’ve heard good things but went off it in season 3.

cheesewitheverything · 07/11/2019 23:01

For once, I felt putting the time in with a series actually paid off and it was a satisfying finale. Thanks for posting the dance, @Blondeshavemorefun ! I'm glad they made Whitney's fiancé into a proper person in the end. Noah did some nice things on the wedding day for various people with no chance of reward (though he does certainly get his reward later on in the motel). Reminded me of Groundhog Day almost, where someone just finally gets redemption by doing the right thing and seeing how that actually matters.

Pandaintheporridge · 07/11/2019 23:47

Well that was very satisfying Smile

Pandaintheporridge · 07/11/2019 23:48

What was the song that was playing when Helen realised she wanted to go to Noah? I really liked it. Something about race you to the light?

Pandaintheporridge · 07/11/2019 23:55

Oh, have found it. It's by Mason Jennings who seems to be the guy in the programme too

FFSnotanotherone · 07/11/2019 23:59

Nothing in these shows are without meaning!

Notice the inflatable swans in the pool during the dance? Swans mate for life.

The song - lots of meaning.

Yes in Helens perspective she was wearing something a bit drab at the wedding but in Noah's she was wearing a sexy Vivienne Westwood type number. This has happened throughout the show.

AutumnRose1 · 08/11/2019 00:18

Weren’t there swan napkins in a previous wedding in the show?

That show has introduced me to some great songs.

Callthemidwifeplease · 08/11/2019 00:21

I loved the last episode and the one last week. Am so pleased as I had been a bit on the fence about this season.
So many things tied up well. I had wondered why all the emphasis on sienna and the baby- now we know! I finally liked the storyline with future Joanie and loved seeing Noah and the advice he gave. Very profound him saying eventually all the small things dont matter. Thought it was a shame for Helen she didnt live any of her life without her mum!!!
Overall it was a great ending and really emotional but I would have so loved to see how the kids grew up, also a bit more about how Helen and Noah ended up. Also secretly wondered if he had any more women after she died (hopefully not before but I'm not sure....)

PollyPelargonium52 · 08/11/2019 07:00

I think I will buy the soundtrack on cd to remind me of the series.

HeavenlyEyes · 08/11/2019 07:35

Noah telling Joni at the end about what her mother was really like - felt like his redemption in a way.

Apparently Helen and her mum dying the same year was about her mum just going on, and annoying her, for her whole life. I noticed her Dad had died few years after Whitney's wedding.

Blondeshavemorefun · 08/11/2019 07:59

When we first met ej did he say anything about his mum. How she died etc

Before we know who he is

Would have been nice to know what happened to sienna. Did she meet someone etc

I would have liked to have known what happened to the children. Especially Whitney. And did Noah ever have literary success again?
Hopefully Sacha Mann met a horrible end!

Vagndidit · 08/11/2019 09:25

I've been a bit meh about the whole series-I found the Joanie/futuristic end of days storyline to be particularly bonkersand the finale did nothing to help. Whitney is atrocious. Helen is so very dull. Noah is and always will be an arrogant ass. They're all one big hot mess of a family. I stuck it out to the end to find some hope of redemption, but I'm happy to see the back end of them all.

zafferana · 08/11/2019 09:25

Yeah, I wasn't overly enamoured of that ending. It's been a great series over the years, but this final one has been patchy for me. The whole Joanie storyline was unnecessary IMO. I don't see how any of it added to the show and the character was prickly and unpleasant. I didn't like the 'old Noah' bit at the end either. Also Eddie looked nothing Vik - he looked Hispanic and Vik was Indian. So a bit of a raspberry from me, I'm afraid. Noah and Helen were great characters though, as were Alison and Cole - I liked the show best when it focused on those four.

zafferana · 08/11/2019 09:30

I agree that Helen was dull, but she was 'a type' that I recognise. A woman who tries to keep everyone happy, who masks or buries her own feelings for the greater good of the family, but then occasionally does something selfish and gets chastised for it. Her repression was understandable when you look at her parents.

MrsPellegrinoPetrichor · 08/11/2019 13:27

Just lost my post ,I'll try again...

10/10 for Noah dancing like a boss on the cliff Grin

0/10 for the kids sitting right outside the motel room where their parents were having sex, they'd have been running back to the car as quick as their revulsion would allow!!Hmm

Helen was dull and I don't think her character was portrayed well by MT and her distracting over inflated duck lips.

Ditto Joanie, the actress was so hammy it was like she was in panto Confused

The whole Joanie storyline was unnecessary.

Considering how long the whole thing went in for, five series, they did well!!

EachandEveryone · 08/11/2019 13:43

I find the actor who played Joanie is the same in everything. Always looks miserable.

Whitney168 · 08/11/2019 14:21

Yes in Helens perspective she was wearing something a bit drab at the wedding but in Noah's she was wearing a sexy Vivienne Westwood type number. This has happened throughout the show.

Aaah yes, of course! I have seen them do this throughout, but for some reason I didn't clock it for the wedding.

Figgygal · 08/11/2019 18:14

The dress Helen wore in Noah's view was beautiful

I might watch it again later

Pandaintheporridge · 08/11/2019 18:48

I did not watch season five, just the very last episode. Was the idea that Montauk had basically disappeared into the sea? Is that why Noah had no customers? I was looking at the coastline at the end and trying to remember if it looked different!
I loved watching Helen's face while it was dawning on her that she wanted to go to Noah. So many expressions.
