So we know she is dead

Will we find out who killed her

Was it boyfriend ?

Have hazy memory of last episode

May have to rewatch

Not sure what plot they can use for this series

I loved it in the end - a total turnaround from some earlier series!

I liked the #metoo storyline as I felt it connected so well with the underlying theme of the program ie the different perspectives shown in each episode. Thinking back to those encounters Noah had, I don’t remember even thinking about consent as an issue at the time. Because they were shown from Noah’s perspective and he saw them as consensual. I found it very in-keeping with the rest of the show.

The thing I don’t understand is about Joanie. Why did Cole let her think Alison killed herself and tell her they were better off without her. Couldn’t he see the damage he was doing to her? He didn’t have to say he suspected murder if that was too difficult, he could have just said it was a dreadful accident.

Of course, then there might not have been a Joanie storyline to tie it all together again in the end!

supercee · 09/11/2019 10:53

I loved it too, perfect song to end it on a high.

Like I said on the other thread, loved season 1 and 2, hated 3 and only watched half of 4. Semi liked this season but for once the ending was great. I too would've liked to see how the others turned up. I thought Whitney, though she had a glimmer of being alright, was unbearable throughout the whole thing Confused

I missed what old Noah said to Joanie though, will have to watch that back and to echo a PP, Anna Pacquin definitely hammed up that part. All of Joanie's parts were annoying my apart from the end.

So was Noah a sexual predator? I was confused when he was getting accused as I don't recall it like that in the previous seasons but now I'm thinking we only saw it from his perspective and obviously he won't see himself like that?

userxx · 09/11/2019 12:10

Just watched the last episode and I loved it. Shed a tear at old Noah dancing on the cliff. I will miss it.

jardy · 11/11/2019 16:06

Loved every episode especially the last one.It was all brilliant.
Well done to the superb writers and actors.
I shall miss it very very much-and the entertaining insightful comments from mumsnetters!

SarahBeeney · 11/11/2019 21:00

I've finished it too. I thought it was brilliant!

InvisibleWomenMustBeRead · 12/11/2019 00:29

I'm another who thought it was excellent?

ConfCall · 12/11/2019 08:12

I thought that it was a super conclusion although I feel that Eddie was miscast - a good actor, but he did not look like his parents’ son, and appeared to be older than 30/31.

I liked the hints that the characters had had pleasant lives - Stacey’s book, Eddie’s comments about Sierra having spent summers with Helen’s family and Noah referring to Eddie as a “nephew” of sorts. And of course, Helen and Noah remained a couple until her death at 79.

Whitney and Colin laughing and cuddling in their last scene outside the motel - implies that they were happily married, and maybe that the siblings remained close.

Loved the flash mob, Bruce contentedly tied to his chair, and underage Stacey taking sly swigs of champagne!

Glad that Sasha Mann was not present. Would have been nice to have seen Vik’s parents amongst the guests though.

ihatethecold · 12/11/2019 08:18

ifonly
beautifully put... ive always had very strong views about infidelity but your post has really helped me see it from a different perspective.

As for the final Affair... it was wonderful, to see the Grandad tied up, was such a funny lighthearted touch.

Whitney was an utter bitch to her mother, Undeservedly I thought.

I feel sad its over and didn't like the final scene with Noah dancing. I would have preferred to see him with his kids and grandchildren. I thought it was cringy.

Helen is an amazing actress.

If anyone is needing something else to watch then Modern love on amazon is lovely to watch

Figgygal · 12/11/2019 08:43

I don't know how mainstream the show is it's not something I see referenced a lot online but I hope it gets a reputation for being one show that ended properly.

Agree Series III was absolutely diabolical I barely managed to watch it. last year definitely improved although funnily enough I never watch the episode where Alison died I don't think I wanted to

AutumnRose1 · 12/11/2019 11:01

This thread made me decide to watch it

Two episodes so far, really excellent.

Re Noah, I always thought he was dodgy, AFAIC he raped Helen and Alison and I assumed we were headed for that story.

happilybemused · 12/11/2019 19:59

I really liked this season and if you liked 1 and 2 you may also love season 5.

I absolutely hated season 3 and stopped watching halfway through. Didn't get the whole Noah prison/stabbing/ french teacher story.

Watched during season 4 and gradually binge watched.

I absolutely loved season 5. It's not for everyone but -

If you look back Whitney is always seen as difficult by Helen's perspective.

Grandmother and Helen have a similar problem from episode one.
.
Loved Noah's words of wisdom to Joanie.

It was a great ending in my opinion :)

IfOnlyOurEyesSawSouls · 12/11/2019 23:49

@ihatethecold that is kind of you to say . Like Helen , when she said at the end "what if i just want to be with you?" I knew that is was right thing for me , there was a much bigger picture than seeing it as "well he cheated- its a deal breaker".

I am still so moved by the insight of the cast & writers into how an affair can play out . i was isolated by family & friends because of my decision to stay with DH so to have my thoughts & feelings validated (even though it is only through a TV show!!) was quite powerful for me.

And The Waterboys song in the finale was so bloody perfect, because that is also about seeing a bigger picture, a bigger plan, and realising that there is just so much more to life.

nononever · 15/11/2019 18:14

Shed a tear at old Noah dancing on the cliff. I will miss it.

Me too. We just finished watching it last night, even my husband was touched by it. He just asked me to play the last 5 minutes of Noah on the cliff again. That Waterboys track is one of my favourite songs.

So sad it has finished!

AutumnRose1 · 15/11/2019 19:06

I’m currently watching an episode based on Sierra and a bit bored, but all the episodes before that were great.

When helens mum says to her that her dad has Alzheimer’s and Helen said “oh my god, it never stops”.....I really felt that.

AreYouSiriusLupin · 15/11/2019 23:24

I loved the ending! Perfect. I feel rather emotional thinking of old Noah dancing.

InvisibleWomenMustBeRead · 16/11/2019 23:17

I agree @AreYouSiriusLupin

Starksforthewin · 18/11/2019 11:55

I’m with everyone who thought it was an excellent ending. I may go back and watch the first two seasons again.

I also hated Series 3 and nearly gave up on the whole thing. I’m glad I didn’t. I found the Helen and Noah relationship to be so significant and touching. Sobbed my heart out at the final scene of Noah on the cliff.

The music has always been great, disappointed to see there is no S 5 soundtrack album yet.

AutumnRose1 · 18/11/2019 22:21

Just finished

Lovely ending but JUSTICE FOR ALISON!

great music, lovely to hear Neil Finn “She will have her way”, one of those tracks I think none of my friends have heard of!

AutumnRose1 · 18/11/2019 22:22

Also, if you’d told me someone could remake Whole of the Moon, I’d have been Hmm but the new version is lovely.

Fatboysmudge · 02/12/2019 20:01

Good ending 👍
I was just wondering if someone can tell who one of the faces are in the opening credits? I recognise Helen, Noah & Joanie in there, but there's another woman's face too? Is it Whitney?

Deecaff · 04/12/2019 21:36

Finished watching yesterday and loved it. Good to see a series get a proper wrapped up ending, too many go on too long or end abruptly.

Fatboy - difficult to tell, I assumed it was Alison but doesn't look that much of a likeness really.

I guess with Whitney being difficult they're showing she's high maintenance, but in the other episodes of this series she's seemed far more of a sympathetic non-bratty person than previously.

Did anyone notice the dates on the graves at the end? Helen's mother living to 100 and dying in the same year Helen did.

Blondeshavemorefun · 07/12/2019 08:19

Yes noticed the grave dates

She never got to escape her mum :(

Deecaff · 07/12/2019 11:53

Blondes, we laughed because DH is always joking that certain of my relatives will live to 110.

Got the song in my head still.
