This was my life until recently, watched it this morning with tears in my eyes, so well done. Once the scales were lifted it was easy to see how abusive the relationship has been. I've left him, I'm free, my son is safe and I can rebuild my life now. I never thought it would happen to me, but it did and I'm healing.

UrgentExitRequiredFella · 24/07/2019 10:43

So bloody triggered watching it last night. It was like someone was acting out my life. Just replace the suicide threats with, if you leave I'll take the kids/you're not taking the kids coz you're clearly unwell/deluded/mental.😒

Rachelover40 · 24/07/2019 11:20

Chilling.

GodDammitAmy · 24/07/2019 11:25

They improvised the lot.

Really? It felt like it but hadn't read anything about it.

Isitmeorhimthistime · 24/07/2019 13:01

This is my stbeh to a T. Fucking hell I've been made to feel like the psycho and unreasonable one for so long that I believed it. I'm going to ask him to watch it because he is so unaware of how he behaves.

IHaveBrilloHair · 24/07/2019 16:44

Just finished it, wow, what brilliant actors.
The barbecue was painful to watch.

icelollycraving · 24/07/2019 17:00

I turned it off after half hour as it was a bit painful to watch. I’d read they improvised a lot, and thought it was extremely realistic.

theliverpoolone · 24/07/2019 18:54

The guy was brilliant - I'd never seen him before so it felt like watching a fly-on-the-wall real life documentary, watching him, he was that believable.

Xyzzzzz · 24/07/2019 19:00

I’ve recorded it! I’ll watch it tomorrow.

LizzieMacQueen · 24/07/2019 20:10

20 minutes in and haven't RTFT yet but, this is like Mumsnet on film!

Did the writers poach their ideas from us!

LizzieMacQueen · 24/07/2019 20:50

@HelenaDove I was thinking the same, an infommercial for 15/16 year olds.

Shouting LTB at the telly.

lollipopguild · 24/07/2019 21:45

Is the actor playing her dp also in 'This is England' ? The one who talks about 'sniff banging' and is mates with the lad who plays Gendry in GOT ?

HelenaDove · 25/07/2019 01:06

@GodDammitAmy They were interviewed on Channel 4 news last Sunday. Should still be on their site

Haggisfish · 25/07/2019 01:08

There are three in the series and the actresses all said the scripts were relatable to their own lives.

MissB83 · 25/07/2019 08:17

This was my first relationship to a T, it made me feel quite chilled watching it. At the time I really thought "he loves me so much" but it was just manipulation, gaslighting, emotional games, you are always the one made to feel like you are in the wrong. So well portrayed

Lilyofthefields · 25/07/2019 13:46

I’ve had to pause at 18 minutes. It’s very tense and claustrophobic.
And a bit close to home. I can see myself in both of them so far (apart from the leggings bit).

He is self- centred and lazy, but isn’t she a bit moody and her behaviour a bit confrontational?

Lilyofthefields · 25/07/2019 13:48

Oh hang on, they’ve started swearing and shouting. That’s not familiar.

Windbeneathmybingowings · 25/07/2019 13:51

I did actually feel like she was also quite manipulative to him as well at times, very subtly but it was overshadowed by how massively awful he was on the whole. I don’t think it was ever a relationship that could have worked even if he wasn’t so emotionally manipulative, she wanted someone to book things for her and take her places and he was never going to be that. They were a recipe for disaster.

Lilyofthefields · 25/07/2019 13:59

Yeah, when she was moaning on about her friends all doing things, and her life being dull I thought, “why is she waiting for him to fix that?”.

Lilyofthefields · 25/07/2019 14:04

Oh god the bbq.

The friends’ acting is great.

CarolDanvers · 25/07/2019 14:09

The bit where he said he'd put a trellis up for privacy if it was his garden was done perfectly. The fact that she knew he was a lazy, fucker who would do no such thing and make no such effort ever and how dare he say such a thing was portrayed with just that one look on her face. That resonated so much with me. I used to sit in stunned silence in group gatherings as ex H pontificated about all his grand plans for our future and home, when he never lifted a finger to do anything in all the time we were together.

BrienneofTarthILoveYou · 25/07/2019 14:31

I thought that was just his way of putting her friends down, rather than actually him saying he was going to do that at their house?

CarolDanvers · 25/07/2019 14:39

I thought he was saying "if it was my house I would do this" not that he was going to do it there.

CluelessAboutClothes · 25/07/2019 14:39

The camera angles were claustrophobic too. It was all so close up and I found that hard.

Xyzzzzz · 25/07/2019 15:21

It was awkward to watch, very well acted. I really felt for her being stuck in a relationship she didn’t want to be in deep down. I’m glad she left that doesn't always happen in real life and it’s hard.
