Every episode is like Groundhog Day.

CoolCarrie there's already one Scott & Bailey actress in it - Amelia Bullmore as Mrs Atkinson. And she was in Coronation Street too!

northernstars · 27/06/2019 22:48

@StayAChild I can't remember her name either but she was going out with Sophie Webster and possibly died??

StayAChild · 28/06/2019 07:26

@northernstars

Was it Maddie from the time Sophie volunteered at the homeless shelter?

LittleAndOften · 28/06/2019 09:01

I have given up on this too. I suppose they are restricted by the events in her diaries, but it just doesn't seem to be going anywhere. There's no momentum.

AuntieMarys · 28/06/2019 09:04

I absolutely love it! Went to Shibden Hall this week too.

placemats · 28/06/2019 09:05

Loving this show. Great video here:

StayAChild · 28/06/2019 10:53

Thanks for that Gentleman Jack song link placemats. I love hearing at the end of the show.

CheckingOutTheQuantocks · 28/06/2019 20:49

I'm still watching. I see what you mean about some of it being repetitive, especially the coal storyline, but it's never anything less than entertaining. And I love Gemma Whelan in it. I went to Shibden a few weeks ago, with it being in my neck of the woods. It's a beautiful place, so interesting, and it's got adorable little stained glass panels in the main hall. Every time I catch sight of them in the background of the programme, I do a little squeak and point at them and say "stained glass!", which I am sure is not at all annoying for anyone else.

GotToGoMyOwnWay · 28/06/2019 23:06

I find the coal story line interesting from the point of view of a forward looking female trying to deal with the attitudes of misogynistic men & beating them at their own game. I love that she’s not bound by convention. I’d rather it was slow & realistic & based on her diaries than made more exciting to suit a modern audience. I think Anne Lister has managed that by her own efforts. If that makes any sense.

SoupDragon · 29/06/2019 09:01

What worries me is that if they are based on her diaries, how did they know about the man being fed to the pigs? Surely that means the son gets found out 🙁

Good point @SoupDragon and he must anyway, as folk get away wi nowt.

I love the series. There's obviously more political unrest to come, as well as the domestic drama.

I had only heard of Anne Lister through O'Hooley and Tidow whose song about her rightly became the theme tune. They are brilliant and well worth checking out; a couple and folk duo from Huddersfield.

I wondered about all the food too, every meal is a spread, with jelly moulds and pies. They would be enormous if they ate so much all the time.
I suspect the same food was brought out time after time until it was mouldy. That was certainly the case in Jane Austen's time - not sure when this all took place.

CoolCarrie · 29/06/2019 11:47

Yes I noticed ‘Steph’ from Corrie as the nosy auntie. She is a good actress and her husband in real life Paul Higgins, was excellent as Hilton in Line Of Duty.

GotToGoMyOwnWay · 29/06/2019 15:12

This is interesting, while Sowden was real the facts have been changed- a lot!

SoupDragon · 29/06/2019 15:44

So, they have made some of the story up!

GotToGoMyOwnWay · 29/06/2019 15:47

Clearly. The actual story sounds just as interesting so I don’t know why they messed with it Confused

Meyoumeanmeh · 29/06/2019 15:50

I found the last episode a bit boring but have loved all the others. I hope the next one is better.

powershowerforanhour · 29/06/2019 16:08

Was the coach crash/ leg amputation bit real or did they make that up to make the baddies seem badder and give the audience someone to boo?

I'd be pissed off if I was a descendent of the pig guy! But it does make a good story.

SoupDragon · 29/06/2019 16:10

I was just thinking that about Pig Man's descendants. They have completely changed his character !

powershowerforanhour · 29/06/2019 16:19

The real Sowden story- with the son going to Cambridge university- is interesting but I suppose they already had one go-ahead convention breaker in the story (Anne) so they didn't want another and went with a more convenient trope to give another boo-baddie (dad) and yay- goodie (son).

I think the son was well cast and whoever played his mum was good too; brought a bit of nuance to it and the son looked like he had a streak that would render him capable of bumping soneone off.

BrienneofTarthILoveYou · 29/06/2019 16:36

I'm really enjoying it, think it's great & Suranne Jones is fantastic.

CheckingOutTheQuantocks · 29/06/2019 16:49

The rest of it, other than Pig Man, sounds pretty accurate, which makes me think that they're going to go for an authentic version of the ending too. If so, it'll be very sad!

BrienneofTarthILoveYou · 29/06/2019 17:44

No spoilers @CheckingOutTheQuantocks Smile

CheckingOutTheQuantocks · 29/06/2019 18:08

That's as far as I was planning to go!

Bouldghirl · 30/06/2019 15:31

I really tried. I adore Suranne Jones but I just couldn’t get into it. I lasted 3 episodes (2 more than lots of my friends). I might give the book a try.
