Gentleman Jack is anyone still watching?

Every episode is like Groundhog Day.

OP posts:

Groundhog day is utterly boring and Gentleman Jack is fabulous. Cannot see any connection.

SoupDragon · 05/07/2019 07:10

The connection is that each episode seems to be striding, trying to push Anne Walker into a relationship and coal. All 3 on a repeat cycle.

Italiangreyhound · 05/07/2019 08:26

But it is a true story. So if that happened, that's what the story tells. Groundhog is a made up story, annoying and a waste of time to watch IMHO.

I get implication, I just don't agree. It's a slice of history I find fascinating.

BrienneofTarthILoveYou · 05/07/2019 09:08

I find it fascinating too @Italiangreyhound. It's made me want to learn more about Ann Lister and Anne Walker but don't want to until the show is over as don't want spoilers!

Whisky2014 · 05/07/2019 09:13

I'm shocked at how many people haven't heard of grounding day!

Fontella · 05/07/2019 09:15

I'm still watching, in fact I realised this week it's the only programme I watch regularly on the BBC.

I am seriously thinking about cancelling my TV license. I never watch mainstream TV - if I do sit in the lounge (which is rare) I will watch something on Netflix.

The BBC's withdrawal of free licenses for the over 75s, plus finding out that Lineker is on nearly 2 million quid a year (!), has me questioning why the hell I'm paying for something I never watch anyway, apart from one hour a week for Gentleman Jack, and that is finishing anyway.

CheckingOutTheQuantocks · 05/07/2019 09:50

I hear there's going to be a second series, which I think makes sense - without giving spoilers, there's so much more of Anne Lister's life and exploits to come, and I couldn't see how it could have been fitted into the last episode. I am still enjoying it and I thought last week's episode moved things on a lot.

Brienne you'll have a long time to try to avoid spoilers!

BrienneofTarthILoveYou · 05/07/2019 10:29

If there's going to be a 2nd series then I'll not google anything but if next week is the end, then I'll definitely be looking them up. It's a fab show just for the fact that I'd never heard of Ann Lister before, so that alone is fab.

One question I do have if you're able to help - why did Ann inherit Shibden if her dad is still alive? Who did she inherit from and why not her sister?

CheckingOutTheQuantocks · 05/07/2019 11:57

I think Shibden actually belonged to her aunt, the one played by Gemma Jones in the series, not her father. Anne didn't technically inherit until her aunt had died, but she did take charge of the estate several years before that, I presume because her uncle wasn't around any more. As to why her and not her sister, Anne was older than Marian. Her aunt seems to have known about her sexual preferences and been quite ok about it all!

SoupDragon · 05/07/2019 12:07

But it is a true story. So if that happened, that's what the story tells.

That doesn't necessarily make it interesting for everyone or unrepetitive.

Yes, and repetitive. Which was the point.

SoupDragon · 05/07/2019 12:08

The BBC's withdrawal of free licenses for the over 75s....

That was funded by the government and it was the government who withdrew the funding.

BrienneofTarthILoveYou · 05/07/2019 14:40

Thanks @CheckingOutTheQuantocks although surely that means she shouldn't be able to use it as collateral against the loan without her aunts permission? That's worrying me!

SoupDragon · 05/07/2019 15:28

With respect to Groundhog day, people aren't actually saying it's like the film but it's like the premise of the film, and definition of Groundhog Day A day when things seem to happen in exactly the same way as on the previous day (informal)

CheckingOutTheQuantocks · 05/07/2019 16:00

I'm not sure Brienne - IRL she was running the estate for about 10 years before she actually inherited officially. I have no idea if she gambled with the property deeds like that, or if it's a bit of artistic license. She could certainly be quite difficult to deal with and could be a harsh landlord.

Fontella · 05/07/2019 16:18

That was funded by the government and it was the government who withdrew the funding.

Regardless of who is responsible it has made me realise that I don't watch mainstream TV any more apart from an occasional programme (which I can easily do without) so why am I paying a license fee to fund the ludicrous salaries of programme presenters I never watch?

I'll watch the final episode of this series of GJ on Sunday and then I'm cancelling it.

I have just caught up from last week.

I am probably being thick but can anyone explain the giant thermometer?!

buggerthebotox · 08/07/2019 07:11

checkered maybe the thermometer was a nod to the Victorians' interest in science and technology? I can imagine Anne being interested in something like that.

squeekywheel · 08/07/2019 07:36

What did people expect to happen in nineteenth century Yorkshire exactly?

I thought it was brilliant. Brilliantly acted and I really like her little soliloquy's.

BrienneofTarthILoveYou · 12/07/2019 00:07

I thought it was brilliant too & agree, loved her soliloquys.

SoupDragon · 12/07/2019 06:51

What did people expect to happen in nineteenth century Yorkshire exactly?

This wasn't 19th century Yorkshire, it was 21st century U.K. with full access to a editing suite to trim down the "filler" stuff.

SoupDragon · 12/07/2019 06:51

The last episode was far better.

squeekywheel · 12/07/2019 08:22

Filler? I didn't think that any of it was wasted at all.

You may have an awesome flapjack recipe but you're wrong about gentleman jack Smile

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 10/09/2019 14:21

I am (very) late to this thread but I have just binged watched the whole series after a random visit to Shibden Hall.

I hadn't really heard of the show before. I thought it was fantastic! One of the best things I've watched for years. Suranne Jones is especially good. I can't wait for the next series.
