Every episode is like Groundhog Day.

I am shocked by how heartless you all are!! Smile

I know there has been lots of striding about and adventures, but at the heart of it is the story of a lesbian relationship. Ann Walker is struggling with everything she has been bought up to believe, and her family pressures, against what she recognises as her true self.

As this is based on true events I cant question the plot line of her sister and brother in law trying to help (by there standards) but I suspect in many other families at that time she would have been committed to an asylum and all the greedy relatives would have d happily spent her money.

I'm not particularly interested in coal, but still am interested in how it shows that unless you have money you dont have a free hand.

Just because Anne with an e is able to live outside of convention doesn't mean that Ann without an e is able to do so.

In many ways the story is more hers because it starts with Anne Lister well establised as an outsided. So the real journey is for Ann Walker.

Did anyone notice Marian give a little look to the camera in last nights episode?

Very subtle, but definitely meant for the viewers Grin

stumbledin · 24/06/2019 15:43

Yes! Poor Marian having to put up with and tidy up after Anne.

Why is Anne so horrible to her?

Hepzibar · 24/06/2019 20:01

Hey @JaneJeffer cheeky. I've seen it on Netflix

It's still Groundhog week

I am enjoy it and it was funny to see Katherine Kelly in i the last night, two ex wives of Steve MacDonald ! And all we need is Lesley Sharp to appear and we will have Scott And Bailey!

eddielizzard · 24/06/2019 20:46

I'm really enjoying! I also liked Marian's exasperated look at the camera. I think it's all very well acted. I don't think it's groundhog day. I did try to wade through the diaries a couple of years ago but it was rather tedious. This interpretation is good.

JaneJeffer · 24/06/2019 20:56

Oh so you're a youngster then Hepzibar Grin

JaneJeffer · 24/06/2019 20:58

My overriding memory of the book is of lots of descriptions of what they had for dinner. They seemed to have about seven courses every day.

Hepzibar · 24/06/2019 21:44

I wish JaneJeffer ** I lied, I remember when it was released.

(I work in a Groundhog company - we have the same meetings every year, make the same decisions and get the same result)

I'm loving this series! I am not finding it boring at all and I think the portrayal of the struggle against the 'norm' and societies expectations of them as women is wonderfully handled.
I really like Suranne Jones in it

MyOtherProfile · 25/06/2019 20:26

I'm kind of mixed on it. I like that it's a fairly gentle Sunday evening drama, which is what TV is supposed to show on a Sunday evening IMHO. Not a fan of SJ. She suits the role though. Highlight is the theme song at the end.

MrsMoastyToasty · 26/06/2019 00:01

Does anyone watch it and think Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders would do a brilliant piss take of it?

BitOfFun · 26/06/2019 00:02

I absolutely love it.

mybrilliantmind · 26/06/2019 00:06

I'm thoroughly enjoying the series and can absolutely see French and Saunders sending it up!

MazDazzle · 26/06/2019 00:10

No. I plodded through the first couple of episodes then gave up!

I had high hopes as I’m a fan of Suranne Jones and Sarah Waters’ novels.

RubberTreePlant · 26/06/2019 00:28

No. Gave up.--Even though SIL worked on it-

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 26/06/2019 01:18

Oh yes, Toasty! Yes Yes Yes!!

French and Saunders absolutely must do a send up of GJ GrinGrin

FagashJackie · 26/06/2019 01:27

How funny would that be to see a French and Saunders, with Joanna Lumley playing the pissed off sister.

I'm ok watching it, kind of like it, but don't feel it's the best thing I've watched.

LauderSyme · 26/06/2019 01:41

I'm hooked on it. All the actors are good and SJ is such a charismatic screen presence. I'm loving all the period detail too. Plus the pieces of music during the opening and closing credits are fab!

GotToGoMyOwnWay · 26/06/2019 07:17

I’m enjoying parts of it. I’d be interested to know how much is factual & how much embellished though. Don’t particularly rate Suranne Jones though. Would like her sister to find happiness but not with the current twat she’s with!

bellinisurge · 26/06/2019 08:31

It's based on someone's diary not a story with finely crafted narrative arcs.
It is fascinating and Suranne Jones is great.

caperplips · 26/06/2019 14:15

I would imagine given the fact that Anne Lister kept such prolific diaries throughout her life that the story-line must be fairly true to facts?
I just find it incredibly interesting that this actual woman lived a such a brave, uncompromising life in those days...she is inspiring. It was very moving in the last episode when she revealed her inner struggle to remain true to her own character in the face of gossip and ridicule and violence. Brave woman

StVincent · 26/06/2019 14:50

Ok watched this week’s now, lots happened! She had a full scale mental health crisis. Love the variety of excellent female characters - the new cousin woman was so much more sensible and bright than the last “babysitter”.

StayAChild · 26/06/2019 15:45

I'm really enjoying it. Not many programmes can keep me in one place for an hour. I've been looking at Shibden Hall - it's open to the public. I want to visit.
I think we saw a more human side of Anne Lister this week. She genuinely does care for Ann Walker.

Someone mentioned Kathy Kelly; there was a third Coronation Street actor in the last episode, the girl who was going to work for a seamstress in Halifax. Can't remember who she played in Corrie.

I wondered about all the food too, every meal is a spread, with jelly moulds and pies. They would be enormous if they ate so much all the time.
