Yewande is being held to a different standard.

Yes. Spilling into violence....lol.

Be interesting to see tonight's show compared to the fixed set up of the other nightly programmes.

SlipperOrchid · 22/06/2019 13:01

And I'm also annoyed with 3 episodes just of D A and Y mainly.

But this is and always has been the LI formula.

First Curtis and Amy.
Then MM and Tommy.
Interrupted by Mayra.
Then Maura and Tommy.
Interrupted by MM.
Then Lucie and Joe.
Then Yewande and Danny.
Interrupted by Arabella.

HighsandLows77 · 22/06/2019 13:01

Sigh... no one said much when Maura was fuming raging (her words) at Elma for saying she might want to talk to Tom.

HighsandLows77 · 22/06/2019 13:02

Sorry “fucking raging” at Elma.

Proteinshakesandtears · 22/06/2019 13:04

The fucking raging got loads of comments on here.

On all social media.

All sorts of names and far more personal.

Hftgl · 22/06/2019 13:07

I really don’t like Arabella, she’s really quite nasty and covers it with a big smile. She got a dig in at MM when she said she wouldn’t trust tommy. There was no need to be so gloating when she spoke to Yewande. Arabella is a beautiful woman but there is ugliness inside of her. Yewande needs to go, this isn’t the right place for her, she hasn’t handled it well but I do feel some sympathy for her.
Maura is the BEST person in there, I would love to be her friend.
I quite like MM and Amber, I used to like Lucie but I’m not feeling it now. Anna is ok, Amy seems very needy.

rockingchaircandle · 22/06/2019 13:11

Some are taking the points about perception of Yewande's aggressiveness very personally. I don't think anyone is saying that everyone who criticised Yewande is a racist, but that there are marked differences in some attitudes to/ language used about her.

Regardless of the extent to which is happening here, it's definitely a harmful thing that does a lot of damage in 'real life'. Serena Williams treatment in the media is an interesting example that might show it better, removed from this situation. If you feel defensive, or patronised, it might be because confronting deep rooted prejudice like this is uncomfortable. But you don't need to defend your own comments, just think of it's possible there is an element of this double standards happening overall.

And yes, other things affect how people are perceived, including attractiveness. It would be interesting to see how Arabella and Yewande's chat would have been perceived last night if the roles had been reversed. If you're attractive, white and well spoken, what comes across as relaxed and reasonable might be taken as mean, aggressive or bitchy in someone else.

Jimjamjooney · 22/06/2019 13:11

I apologise for lumping posters together, that's not on. Proteinshakesandtears you're right, I don't know individual posters and whether bias is forming part of their opinion or not. I guess i like to challenge certain viewpoints as there are still a lot of racial issues occurring (in general i mean).

BrienneofTarthILoveYou you suggested a good point actually about beauty coming into it. We'll just have to see what happens next!

I forgot Yewande is 21, I thought she was older for some reason even though she is acting very immaturely. Danny isnt handling this well and I really liked arabella at the start but think I think she's really bitchy now.

In more trivial news, has anyone seen the backlash against Montana for calling Anton ugly and not manly when she's very preachy about being kind? Blush

Sagradafamiliar · 22/06/2019 13:24

Really protein? Maura is pretty much universally liked on here and called comedy gold. She was defended quite a lot against comments to do with her looks as well

Proteinshakesandtears · 22/06/2019 13:27

rockingchaircandle yet the poster after you realises posters were all lumped together.

As I have said, I gave an opinion. It's been said people giving this opinion are doing so because of racial bias. And if they say its not racial bias, they are wrong. They just dont recognise it

As a person who holds the opinion discussed I will explain from my point of view. Its not taking it personally. Its putting forward my personal point of view.

That doesnt mean I think the bias doesnt exist. Simply that doesnt mean anyone who doesnt like Yewande or think she is aggressive, is doing so because of racial bias. It could be for some not for others.

MoominMantra · 22/06/2019 13:27

In Yewande's case it's obvious that she's socially awkward which may cause her to appear aggressive when in reality she doesn't have those tendencies at all.

Maura says a lot with comedic effect so you don't believe she'd ever erupt.

Proteinshakesandtears · 22/06/2019 13:34

Sagradafamiliar no she hasnt been universally liked.

Most people have been through several cycles of hating and loving her. And while people may say she is TV gold, that doesnt mean they dont like her.

When she came in I liked her, especially after balcony gate. Then I didnt like her, then I felt a bit sorry for her.

Then over the Elma thing I think she was a completely twat and a hypocrite. I didnt like the way she spoke to Elma at all.

In recent days, I have like Maura more not she has calmed down her argessiness and seems to be really nice.

Theres every chance, that while I am not Yewande fan at the moment, that could all change.

I was definitely on Danny's side. Until he laid in bed snogging her, without making it clear he still wanted to get to know Arabella. He really should have been upfront.Theres every chance in a few days, I will think he is a complete dick. Depending in how he handles this.

Sagradafamiliar · 22/06/2019 13:39

Nah, I've been on the thread the whole time and she has been universally liked or found amusing even when she's 'misbehaving'. I was referring to you saying she had a bad reception here, not your own personal opinion of her. No point saying she's had a similar ride on here to Yewande as it just isn't true.

SlipperOrchid · 22/06/2019 13:40

Personally I don’t understand the comments saying people are being racist about Yewande. Are people allegedly racist because she is black or is it because she is Irish?

unique1986 · 22/06/2019 13:41

Arabella has only been on the show for a couple of days.
So I won't judge yet..
And it's all been about her getting Danny.

Sagradafamiliar · 22/06/2019 13:42

Because she's black. Don't want to bring up past threads but people were quite open about things they disliked about her features. The aggressive black stereotype/prejudice can't be explained by her being Irish.

Jimjamjooney · 22/06/2019 13:44

Because she's black. Racism isn't just about the overt calling someone the N word. There's also unconscious bias and other forms. www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2018/dec/02/unconscious-bias-what-is-it-and-can-it-be-eliminated

The first few paragraphs explain the gist.

unique1986 · 22/06/2019 13:44

In a way it would be better if there were two black girls in there.
I bet she feels an outsider.

Proteinshakesandtears · 22/06/2019 13:45

Sagradafamiliar I dint know what threads you read. But Maura hasnt been given an easy ride at all.

Plenty of us have been up and down. Deny it all you want, but it happened.

unique1986 · 22/06/2019 13:45

Diversity in there is so bad.

Proteinshakesandtears · 22/06/2019 13:49

Diversity in there is so bad.

Yes, it really is.

Sagradafamiliar · 22/06/2019 13:51

But protein, you specifically said she had been called out on her aggressiveness: the fucking raging got loads of comments on here. Al sorts of names and for personal
So yeah I will deny that. She was called hypocritical at worst because she expected girl code when she supposedly hadn't stuck to it herself.
People really do need to just own what they say.

Sagradafamiliar · 22/06/2019 13:52

Far more personal*

Proteinshakesandtears · 22/06/2019 13:58

Sagradafamiliar honestly, I cant be arsed. You keep trying to take over the threads with claim that anyone who doesnt like Yewande must be racist.

If you want to discuss just that. Start a bloddy thread. Stop trying to take ove these ones and stop insulting people

Maura was called out in her behaviour, about how she spoke to Elma. I stand by what I said.

Munhu · 22/06/2019 13:59

Regardless of the extent to which is happening here, it's definitely a harmful thing that does a lot of damage in 'real life'.

Yep, and it's also thought to be part of the reason why black children in the UK are excluded and expelled from school at such disproportionate rates. You've seen it on here, the white women's rage being described as childlike and harmless whereas yewande is 'intimidating' and is about to start getting violent and may get kicked out (even though the preview for the next episode showed her having a pretty calm sit down conversation with Danny and not ranting at him in the way that MM did when she was in the same situation).

This study is from the US but is very relevant here I think.

www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/world/2016/oct/04/black-students-teachers-implicit-racial-bias-preschool-study

'While the teachers were asked to detect “challenging behavior”, no such behavior existed in any of the videos. Yet when asked which children required the most attention, 42% of the teachers identified the black boy.'
