Aunt Lydia sure is hard to understand. One minute she expresses concern about what Commander Lawrence did to Emily and the next she's being a bitch to June.

She's such a bitch. It does explain to an extent the people on the last thread saying Gilead had gone soft - obviously it was just the one individual as AL would have had her in the wall!

So good to see that Emily caused her some damage, here's hoping it's permanent!

I thought Emily had done for Aunt Lydia, good to see the old bat back though, she is such a good hate object! Clearly falling down stairs has done nothing for her charm and temper.

Hated the word shredder for the poor little baby. Was a bit surprised at the callousness of it.

But how did they organise a pass for her at no notice?

Aunt Lydia was right though - no way in hell would June have got another 'posting' after everything she'd done. I know it's neccessary to keep the story going, but it's entirely implausible.

I imagine Martha's have fake passes ready?

In the book children born with disabilities were referred to as shredders and I assume 'disposed' of as they didn't match the ideal.
