Has anyone else seen the first episode?

I watched all of season 1 again yesterday in preparation.

Merry Streep was really good and I love Reese Witherspoon.

I had predicted Celeste might be pregnant this series but apparently not.

OP posts:
Aurignacian · 08/07/2019 23:23

Yes I think that’s a possibility

AnneLovesGilbert · 08/07/2019 23:36

Ooh I like the murderous Perry idea!

Theromanempire · 09/07/2019 06:04

encyclo ooh good guess!

I don't actually know that Cory is an undercover police officer...Just speculating as he was coming out of the police station.

Madeline's affair man in the bar was more weird though Confused

AnneLovesGilbert · 09/07/2019 09:21

Could perry have killed his dad?

SapatSea · 09/07/2019 11:08

Cory came out of the police station chatting with another guy and Bonnie saw him.

Bonnie's mother said "you kill (ed?) me"

The Tori scene in the bar was very strange. At first I didn't recall who she was. Are they after some weird foursome?

I didn't realise the man with Bonnie's mother was her actual dad, I thought he was her stepdad as Bonnie seemed so hands off with him, when they arrived.

I agree with others, they need to move things along a bit faster and the Bonnie mother wieird physic stuff plot is a boring distraction.

Nicole Kidman did go full on Aussie.

This season seems style over substance

mikado1 · 09/07/2019 13:12

Is it just 6 episodes?! Lots to sort if so. I must have missed the bit about Perry's brother? The only bit I remember was that Ziggy is like him. Do we know he's dead?

Encyclo · 09/07/2019 14:13

Perry’s Dad left and started a new family afte the brother died. I think there’s something sinister there.
I mean why refer to it if there isn’t?

AzraiL · 09/07/2019 16:02

What did Bonnie need protection from as a child???

AnneLovesGilbert · 09/07/2019 17:16

Her mother I assumed. Or another family member?

mikado1 · 09/07/2019 18:14

Her mother? I thought she told the mother and she protected her buy the dad didn't. .she kissed her mother's hand as she recalled it..

LoafofSellotape · 09/07/2019 19:06

Her mother was abusive.

mikado1 · 09/07/2019 20:20

Oh god.. that's depressing. I thought the mum was mad after hearing the disclosure :(

Clawdy · 09/07/2019 22:39

Her mother was the abuser. And the father tried to protect her, but seemed to fear the mother too.

lovelychops · 09/07/2019 23:10

For those saying style over substance - and I think I do agree, I think it's because of the new director. Andrea Arnold. I like her work but thought it was a very surprising choice that she was picked to do it.
I feel it is quite strangely paced. Some bits move really fast, eg the montage of Ziggy and the twins all having dinner together (a few episodes ago), then the stuff at the couples retreat seemed over so quickly. It was funny, but it seems like some major parts are dragging yet important subplots are too quickly over with.
I agree that the whole thing with Bonnie's mother is too distracting. I also assumed he was a step father as she was so distant to him.
I just don't get how Bonnie and Nathan would be together either.
Having said all that i do love it ! I think its brilliant. I definitely think this season feels different in tone or something to the first one, which was fantastic.

mikado1 · 09/07/2019 23:24

Ok. Sorry I was so slow on that. I must have looked away. Husband now says was Bonnie going to the police because she killed the mother?! She's crying walking down the hospital corridor.. yes, I just rewatched. Did you all get that already?

mikado1 · 09/07/2019 23:27

Absolutely lovelychops they're the strangest couple.

alltoomuchrightnow · 10/07/2019 03:24

I just came on here to say she went full aussie, but was beaten to it!

Oblomov19 · 10/07/2019 08:49

I too agree that there's some revelation to come out about Perry's brother dying at aged 5.

Celeste seems naive: there is already enough evidence for her to lose both boys.

Oblomov19 · 10/07/2019 09:19

Celeste's oldest son called her a bitch! Shock

But the youngest? Is he max? Was the one that bullied Renata's daughter. And everyone blamed Ziggy.

But we never saw Max being questioned about that? Counselling?

Where is the school and the authorities and the American equivalent of social services in all of this? re-the bullying and the fact their father died. counselling for everybody? there seems to be none of this!!

Apart from Renata, when her ring was taken by the Judge, claimed she had some medical bills? For counselling?

All really wierd.

DarlingNikita · 10/07/2019 09:59

So Cory is an undercover police officer is he?? I don't know. He was already working at the aquarium when Jane started, no? So when would they have planted him? I wonder if there's something else weird going on with him, and we're just being led to believe he's undercover. Bonnie's guilt is making her jittery and I think she's leaping to conclusions about everything, like when she saw the detective at the hospital. I think it's possible Cory is working for the police in relation to Mary Louise – someone this episode said she seemed to be getting info on Celeste that only the police know.

And why was the theatre director in the bar watching his wife crack on to Ed?? I think the two of them were out for a drink and when she saw Ed she came on to him to wind up her husband.

What’s the logic btw of shared care for the twins? If MS genuinely thinks they’re not safe in Celeste’s care why would she settle for weekends? She doesn't genuinely think they’re not safe in Celeste’s care. She just wants them and is using that as an excuse. Maybe she thinks that once she's got shared care it'll be easy to build a case for her to have them full-time –continuing to undermine Celeste and winning the boys over so they want to stay with her.

I don't think Bonnie has killed her mother. Her mother did ask her to kill her, presumably because she hates being trapped in her post-stroke body.

I don't mind Celeste's accent. We don't know where she's meant to be from and there's been conversations about her leaving her family and friends to move to be with Perry. I think it's quite feasible that she's meant to be Australian and her accent is a mix.

mikado1 · 10/07/2019 10:03

I also wonder about the different behaviours of the twins, the one that was bullying Annabella is much quieter about the situation, I wonder if he's going to say something.

Don't know if she was winding up her husband, he was calmly looking on as if they were in on it together. Two episodes to go I think.

DarlingNikita · 10/07/2019 10:04

I didn't think Joseph was calmly looking on. He looked shocked and upset to me.

mikado1 · 10/07/2019 10:32

Ok, I may need to rewatch again!!

AnneLovesGilbert · 10/07/2019 13:07

Apart from Renata, when her ring was taken by the Judge, claimed she had some medical bills? For counselling?

I assumed plastic surgery but seem to have got most things wrong so far Grin

historysock · 10/07/2019 14:50

There was a lot in that episode!

Did Bonnie kill her Mum?
Is Corey an undercover copper? (I hope not)
What was that weirdness with the woman in the bar and her husband at the end?

Is there actual evidence that Celeste is addicted to drugs and alcohol? Wouldn't it just be one word against another? She did go full on oz there didn't she?

That's a great theory about Perry maybe killing his brother!
