Has anyone else seen the first episode?

I watched all of season 1 again yesterday in preparation.

Merry Streep was really good and I love Reese Witherspoon.

I had predicted Celeste might be pregnant this series but apparently not.

Just watched episode 4 as woke up ridiculously early and couldn't get back to sleep. It's going painfully sloooowwww. Wish it would just get going!

LoafofSellotape · 01/07/2019 10:21

Episode 4 was slightly better imo, just a bit.

Kidman is really spoiling it for me.

I'm getting bored of the psychic mother.

They shouldn't have made series 2,there really was no need, the book and first series was fantastic.

Bellasblankexpression · 01/07/2019 12:15

Hii...found you! Couldn't understand why there wasn't a thread then realised I had just missed it.

I loved season 1 but am struggling with this a bit. I hate what they'd done to Madeleine and Ed, find Bonnie's mum really tedious, also they seemed to drop Bonnie suffering severely with PTSD and guilt since last episode? She's suddenly okay now - unless I missed something, just found it a bit jolting.

I do like the Renata bankruptcy storyline and Jane's struggles to connect with her new guy (although he looks so young??).

One thing I do like is the continuation of appearances - everyone trying to carry on portraying these great lives outwardly, while the cracks are showing and things are falling apart. I'm glad the women are confiding in each other now though...

AnneLovesGilbert · 01/07/2019 13:58

I’m really enjoying it, don’t mind it being slow. Not sure where it’s going but keeping faith in Liane having co-written it and having a plan!

Madeleine is being awful to lovely Ed. What a heartless cow. Nathan is pathetic isn’t it? Acting like a bratty teenager riding waves of competitive testosterone.

MS in this gives me the absolute creeps.

I like Renata more in this than s1. She’s very relatable in a way.

Incredibly relieved my friends never have fancy dress parties, looks like a load of bloody faff and effort...

Worried about jane and the new guy. Wtf has he already met ziggy? She’s so fragile, I want to wrap her up and protect her from the world not watch her with some rando who she probably shouldn’t trust.

Bonnie certainly seems perkier, maybe having her mum around has helped even though it doesn’t seem an easy relationship. I find her mum very annoying but if it works for them.

I finished Nine Perfect Lives. Likeable and great characters but not as memorable or interesting as all the others. Shame.

Bellasblankexpression · 01/07/2019 14:31

I think it's because I love the book and I love Madeleine and Ed in the book so it makes me sad to see them like this. Maybe I need to read the book again to soothe me :) I don't understand why Madeleine doesn't understand why Ed is being like he is.

Agree about Renata @annielovesgilbert I've really warmed to her this series. And YY Nathan is the worst.

I am curious to see where it's going - I wonder if it will be slow slow then suddenly ramp it up in the last couple of episodes - are there 6 or 8 this series, can't remember...

Oblomov19 · 02/07/2019 06:54

Says 7 last season. 7 this season.

Morgan12 · 02/07/2019 07:55

God I nearly fell asleep during that episode. It's too slow. Way too slow. If the next episode doesn't pick up I could honestly stop watching and not be bothered at this point.

Theromanempire · 02/07/2019 09:28

God Meryl Streep is just sinister isnt she? The custody thing, moving into Jane's building and then the comment to Celeste after she slapped her - what do you call that? Foreplay? I would have punched her I think!

Loopytiles · 02/07/2019 11:37

Yes, MS is MiL from hell!

I’m still enjoying it.

Think Ed is going to walk when he finds out what happened to Perry, about the cover up and not being in on it. In the book, when bonnie confessed, he was angry that madeline hadn’t told him and thought she’d prioritised protecting bonnie and thereby nathan, her ex.

Bravelurker · 02/07/2019 15:32

I'm loving this as much as the first one. I have laughed out loud at Renata's outbursts and the scene with Ed, Nathan and the wig, omg absolutely inspired.

shinynewapple · 02/07/2019 15:35

Has anybody who's watching this series read the book and is it very different? Is it just based loosely around the book? Although TBF I read the book ages ago, and although I really enjoyed it I can't remember the plot!

AliceRR · 02/07/2019 15:36

Haven’t read the recent comments yet as I haven’t seen this week’s episode but bt man is working on it now and I should have Internet shortly 🤞

LoafofSellotape · 02/07/2019 15:40

This series isn't based on the book at all,the last one was shinynewapple

DarlingNikita · 02/07/2019 19:16

LoafofSellotape, I thought as much. They seem to be struggling to find plots and drama this series. So how does the book go? Does it end with the revelation of how Perry died?

AnneLovesGilbert · 02/07/2019 23:26

Hope it’s back up soon @AliceRR and you like the latest episode. Thanks for starting this thread Smile

EachandEveryone · 02/07/2019 23:54

Please tell me there wont be a season three? Too many big names in this its style over substance. Such a let down by episode four we should be gripped.

Clawdy · 03/07/2019 20:26

I liked, and was sorry, for Celeste in the first series, but I'm losing sympathy for her now.

AliceRR · 03/07/2019 20:53

@AnneLovesGilbert Is That Nine Perfect Strangers? I enjoyed it (in audiobook) but then it went a bit weird towards the end and I lost interest. Ive just started Three Wishes.

AliceRR · 03/07/2019 20:55

I like Renata more. I still love Madeleine. I find Celeste / NK strange this season. I was never keen on Jane.

I do hope there is something they are building up to. It was more clear with S1 as I think the series started with images of the quiz night and police questioning but this season there isn’t a clear focus. Maybe there will be some big revelation like maybe Perry didn’t rape Jane or something... Bonnie might confess... Renata seems to be playing a bigger part this series

OP posts:
Clawdy · 03/07/2019 22:16

I don't see how they could have a storyline where Perry didn't rape Jane - they showed a disturbing post-rape scene in the last series as I remember.

Bellasblankexpression · 03/07/2019 22:45

i think there might end up being a twist with ML - to do with Perry's brother/his upbringing.
I also think Bonnie might be a red herring and Madeleine might be the one pushed to the edge

Or perhaps it's just going to keep moving through the consequences of their decision and how it's affecting them all, but I think when the first season was so set up with a mystery, it's ingrained in the viewer to look for one. So I don't know how satisfying that would be!

AliceRR · 03/07/2019 22:53

they showed a disturbing post-rape scene in the last series as I remember

They did but they were Jane’s recollection of what happened I think 🤔

I think there will be some kind of twist but they have a job matching up to series 1

AnneLovesGilbert · 03/07/2019 23:19

It was indeed @AliceRR Grin Got it wrong.

I liked the sisters one you’re on. Hope she continues to write more.

I’ve got hair envy this series, apart from Jane whose fringe is awful.

DarlingNikita · 04/07/2019 16:07

Does anyone know if the books should be read in any particular order, or do they all stand alone? Thinking of treating myself to one or two for my hols.

AliceRR · 04/07/2019 17:04

I don’t think there’s an order @DarlingNikig You could read them in the order they were written if you like but I think they’re all just stand alone.
