I thought I'd start a thread for discussing series 3 episode one of The Handmaid's Tale to be shown on Channel 4 at 9pm on 9th June 2019.

Please NO SPOILERS for those who have already watched it.

OP posts:

He must of asked for her, wonder what his explanation for where Emily went is? Surely she is being looked for?

hopeishere · 09/06/2019 22:06

I think Aunt Lydia is alive but badly injured.

Destinysdaughter · 09/06/2019 22:06

Yes first episode was brilliant and has set up a lot of new and exciting trajectories for the rest of the series!

Nelumbo · 09/06/2019 22:07

Yes Aunt Lydia is alive as she was in the trailer

ZigZagIntoTheBlue · 09/06/2019 22:07

Wasnt it commander Lawrence?

Stripyhoglets · 09/06/2019 22:07

Just watching on C4 plus one as i missed first 5 mins. Its commander lawrence

hopeishere · 09/06/2019 22:07

I think Aunt Lydia is alive but badly injured. he's called Commander Lawrence.

MadgeMak · 09/06/2019 22:08

I think the powers that be probably know Emily has made it to Canada, when she walked into the hospital you could see the microchip thing still on her ear.

FrankiesKnuckle · 09/06/2019 22:09

What a fantastic watch - I was sat on the floor crossed legged like a child as close as I could be to the tv.

Just so captivating.

MoobaaMoobaa · 09/06/2019 22:10

after the first 2 series, I really thought they weren't going to make it across the river.

QueenBlueberries · 09/06/2019 22:10

Destiny’s daughter I am not sure what your point is, it honey look at what the US is doing with abortion rights, access to healthcare, issues with racism, their appalling g attitude to refugees, and compare the lot with what Canada has on offer. I think you will actually struggle to make the USA look better than Canada. Pussy grabbing anyone?

ILoveMaxiBondi · 09/06/2019 22:10

Thanks for those reminders.

He doesn’t need to explain where Emily went as the “official” story was that Emily attacked Aunt Lydia and then went and kidnapped Nicole and fled for Canada. So he is “legitimately” without a handmaid.

One thing I am confused about, the new aunt at the centre said the mckenzies might forgive but god needs penance. So it’s obviously known that June went to the mckenzies, how come with all June’s past, and then this, she isn’t being shipped to the colonies? Why would they keep giving her postings? She’s a huge risk!

Also, I reckon Aunt Lydia is alive!

Crinkle77 · 09/06/2019 22:11

prinstress it's commander lawrence. Love him!

CaptainMyCaptain · 09/06/2019 22:13

I think they keep June because she has proven herself to be fertile.

Crinkle77 · 09/06/2019 22:13

It was an amazing first episode. I found season 2 a bit disappointing but this was amazing.

CanILeavenowplease · 09/06/2019 22:14

I assume the fact she’s given birth twice now is what is saving her from the colonies. She’s a good bet for a baby which is the purpose of the handmaidens?

Destinysdaughter · 09/06/2019 22:16

My point is the irony that Canada is being portrayed as this utopia for women, but in real life, the self is law has been passed and there are lots of nasty individuals trying to use that law to roll back rights for actual women.

Of course what’s happyin the US with anti abortion laws is abhorrent but Canada has its own issues too.

Destinysdaughter · 09/06/2019 22:17

Self id not self is!!

InglouriousBasterd · 09/06/2019 22:18

I proper howled when they made it to Canada, and Emily’s face at seeing all the female clinicians at the hospital. Fab opener.

ILoveMaxiBondi · 09/06/2019 22:18

Oh yes she is a precious uterus, that’s true.

Invisimamma · 09/06/2019 22:18

Yes! Commander Lawrence!

It's a wonder that nick isn't on the wall yet.

minou123 · 09/06/2019 22:18

ILoveMaxiBondi - I think they won't ship her to the colonies because they dont have enough handmaidens.

Last season there was the hand maiden who blew herself up at the opening of the new centre and lots of the women died.so they brought lots of the handmaidens back like offred.

HUZZAH212 · 09/06/2019 22:20

@ILoveMaxiBondi I know! It's a bit like would you really hang on to her? But the number of proven fertile women is pretty miniscule. Plus the handmaids who died at the red centre bombing means there's even less women now. It was madness that they shipped back in the ones who'd been exposed to radioactive waste really. I think their choices are pretty limited and they can always fall back on locking her up if she falls pregnant again. I never understood why Eden was murdered unless they'd tested her fertility beforehand.

ILoveMaxiBondi · 09/06/2019 22:20

I worry for nick. How can he remain with C Waterford? Surely Waterford knows, now, that Nick was involved in the baby escape? He’ll want him punished?

CanILeavenowplease · 09/06/2019 22:27

Waterford is himself in a precarious position. His wife showed him up in front of all the other Commanders, her had to sanction his wife losing her finger (I think?), his ex handmaiden has run off with his/not his baby and it could all easily be misconstrued as he helped a handmaiden and her child escape. I do ‘t think he can punish Nick without drawing attention even further to what has been going on in his house?
