I thought I'd start a thread for discussing series 3 episode one of The Handmaid's Tale to be shown on Channel 4 at 9pm on 9th June 2019.

Please NO SPOILERS for those who have already watched it.

That was an amazing first episode. Tense as ever. I worry for anyone in contact with Waterford, kept worrying he was going to beat Serena up and what he would say to Nick. Agree it seems ironic that Canada is being portrayed as a feminist utopia.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 09/06/2019 22:28

Yes, I think Nick knows far too much about him, right back to driving him to Jezebels.

ILoveMaxiBondi · 09/06/2019 22:30

Yes he needs to protect himself and his reputation so can’t punish nick. Good point. He has to pretend his staff are all loyal.

HUZZAH212 · 09/06/2019 22:30

I think Waterford realised Nick is an 'eye' and they have even the commanders scared they'll be reported on and punished.

BettysLeftTentacle · 09/06/2019 22:32

Good episode but I loved the opening to season 2 so much, I was expecting an equally iconic start. So, a bit disappointed. Looking forward to next week though!

minou123 · 09/06/2019 22:34

Do you think Serena is going to pretend she is a 'proper' wife, but is going to be part of the resistance?

ILoveMaxiBondi · 09/06/2019 22:37

I think Serena has to play the “proper wife” part or she’s fucked. There is no other option for Serena, any sign of dissent and she’s a goner.

CurbsideProphet · 09/06/2019 22:39

I love watching a TV prog that has women and their issues right at the heart of it. I've found it v interesting that in Handmaid's Tale world Canada is a safe utopia for women; bit of a dig, considering recent events with self ID etc?

In the book Canada didn't allow all refugees to stay and sent them back at the border. In series 2 it looked the like the Canadian public weren't overly interested until the letters were published online (the letters were hidden by June and taken into Canada by Nick). I wonder if we're heading towards Canadian action against Gilead?

Bringonspring · 09/06/2019 22:39

This is why I love you ladies. I totally missed the point that all the doctors were female in Canada

HUZZAH212 · 09/06/2019 22:45

I think Serena gives zero fucks now. She's lost everything including her identity, education, following a plan she genuinely believed would make the world better. All she had left was the desperation to have a child. I doubt she cares if she hangs so long as Fred doesn't get a happy ever after.

Fantastic episode. How are we going to wait a week for each one without being able to binge

Does anyone know how many episodes are there in total? How far ahead is Hulu? And can we watch Hulu in the UK?!

7Days · 09/06/2019 22:58

Commander Lawrence is a total dick. Hes on a power trip

CurbsideProphet · 09/06/2019 23:02

We're only 4 days behind @AnotherEmma!

Kitsandkids · 09/06/2019 23:05

I told myself if that baby died in the river I was never watching again! Thankfully she didn’t 😊

AnotherEmma · 09/06/2019 23:06

Curbside
I've found an article which says that there are 13 episodes and the first 3 are available on Hulu, then the next 10 will be released weekly. So we're 2 weeks and 4 days behind. Not much point binging though as we'll still have to wait a week for each episode after the third one.

CurbsideProphet · 09/06/2019 23:11

Ah I didn't realise they had done it that way. Definitely best to stick to one a week!

colouringinpro · 09/06/2019 23:13

LOVED it.

AnotherEmma · 09/06/2019 23:14

I have worked out that I could gradually catch up with Hulu by watching one episode every 5.5 days But I don't think the extra 1.5 day will be worth it Grin

RyanStartedTheFire · 09/06/2019 23:28

Did all three cars go in opposite directions at the end? Serena heading in a different direction to Fred?

BrienneofTarthILoveYou · 09/06/2019 23:35

Amazing episode - loved it. Burn Motherfucker burn!

SavageBeauty73 · 09/06/2019 23:43

Bloody hell my heart is pounding. I shouldn't watch so late!

AllGoodDogs · 09/06/2019 23:48

Isn't nick still an eye? So I assume he gets a free pass for his "digressions"

RightOnTheEdge · 10/06/2019 00:06

That was a brilliant start. I loved it!

I wonder if Nick is still an eye. Didn't the Commander he was reporting to get killed in the suicide bombing?

Maybe Commander Waterford can't get rid of him because it would endanger them all as he's too involved/knows too much? Or he's a bit afraid of him.

I was wondering whether to watch this series as I didn't know if I wanted to go through all the harrowing stuff again but now I'm hooked again and can't wait for next week!

UrsulaPandress · 10/06/2019 00:09

Recorded it and just watched. Surprised myself with ugly sobbing when Emily made it to Canada. Then scared the dog when Emily was being applauded.

Had concerns about a third series but I'm captivated once again.

ittooshallpass · 10/06/2019 07:22

Why was Nick so hostile to June? Was he angry that June had potentially killed their baby? Or that she had risked both their lives by coming back?
