I thought I'd start a thread for discussing series 3 episode one of The Handmaid's Tale to be shown on Channel 4 at 9pm on 9th June 2019.

Please NO SPOILERS for those who have already watched it.

A few times in the episode there was a silhouetted or blurred Aunt who looked as if she could have been Aunt Lydia. I couldn’t be sure if that was on purpose.

Chinks123 · 15/06/2019 10:20

Technically Emily is already a murderer for running over that guard. I’m not sure about aunt Lydia..no one’s dead until you’ve seen the body on tv usually.

BrienneofTarthILoveYou · 15/06/2019 10:57

Emily also killed the wife in the colonies (Marisa Tomei played the part) although don't think Serena knows that, but she's definitely a killer regardless.

@AGnu I hadn't noticed that about the cap, so thanks as you're right, it's very symbolic when you realise!

Tinkhasflown · 15/06/2019 11:07

Very true. I'd like to see Aunt Lydia back, she has been such an interesting character, so much that could be explored further with her.

CruCru · 15/06/2019 12:25

I think when Luke was shouting down the phone, he was actually yelling at his ex wife’s answerphone.

Luke wasn’t really someone to warm to in the book. He wasn’t hugely bothered when his wife got fired or had her account frozen.

I’ve just watched the episode again & I’m wondering how June got caught so fast at the McKenzies.

The Eyes arrived almost as soon as she got to Hannah’s room so it can’t have been that the Martha alerted them. The only one who knew she was going there was Cmdr Lawrence & she was with him in the car so he wouldn’t have had a chance to call them either.

All I can think of was that they homed in on her ear tracker?

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 15/06/2019 14:02

I wondered how they got there so fast too. I suspected commander Lawrence. But I’m also wondering if they went there as soon as they realised June was missing cause they suspected she would try and take Hannah aswell as Nicole.

Chinks123 · 15/06/2019 14:03

She cut the tag out of her ear though didn’t she, when she first escaped? I also wondered how they found her so fast, there were flashing lights as soon as she got outside Hannah’s bedroom.

endofthelinefinally · 15/06/2019 14:08

They put another tracker on her when they captured her during the first escape attempt.

Chinks123 · 15/06/2019 14:11

Ah ok. It’s been awhile since I binge watched it, it all blurs into one big episode.

Deadringer · 15/06/2019 14:32

Re the clapping at the hospital, apart from the fact that Emily is a refugee having escaped Gilead, she had managed to also save a baby girl from the regime and babies are in very short supply globally I think? So it's plausible that they see her as a hero for that?

SPOILER ALERT!

Of all places... the Bluddy Radio Times has a massive spoiler for episode 2. I am SO hacked off!! Don't read it Angry

Yecartmannew · 15/06/2019 22:44

Does anyone know of a good podcast for season 1? I've listened to the first episode of Eyes on Gilead for season 2 and is reminding me of some things I had forgotten . Just wondering if there is anything similar for season 1.

TheLoneWolfDies · 15/06/2019 23:29

I don't think Canada has an agenda, they are rescuing anyone who escapes are they not? I mean they helped Luke? And anyway rrmember when Serena was talking to the man in the bar when she and Fred went to Canada? He said something about it being a problem with the men and not the women?

ittooshallpass · 15/06/2019 23:30

Sorry I posted that twice. I didn't think it had posted and wanted to make sure the message got out!

Yes it’s a very good point. Aside from Gilead there is an overall shortage of babies/huge fertility problem. It would be interesting to see how Canada/elsewhere were dealing with that.

EmpressLesbianInChair · 16/06/2019 05:13

Thanks, ittooshallpass!

I often go on RT so thanks for the warning...

Just in case anyone remembers that I somehow missed several incidents from episode 1, mystery solved. We went to watch episode 2 the other night and saw that we could "resume watching" episode 1. So we then realised we'd assumed it was the end when "I don't like Mondays" came on, and switched the telly off. Nitwits, eh?

Grin
OriginofSpecies · 21/06/2019 22:38

Grin That's brilliant! I must admit I thought it was the end of the programme then too (but I kept the telly on 😁)
