And assaulting the family at regular intervals.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 03/06/2019 21:12

The family were terrified of him, he beat them all and beat his wife. He turned up drunk to work and insulted Anne. She was going to speak to him about his tenancy, so potential for losing their home.

He gave him a chance to change, but didn’t seem able to change and tried to kill the son, so he slit his throat.

Bluerussian · 03/06/2019 23:21

I wonder how that will pan out, presumably the pigs mutilated the man so no-one will know he was murdered but, still, his son will be haunted by it, horrible though his father was.

I don't see 'Gentleman Jack' in any way as a 'romp', it has too much else going for it.

MyOtherProfile · 03/06/2019 23:23

I don't think there would have been anything left of him. I lived on a farm for a while and there was sometimes talk of how pigs eat everything so you could use them for the perfect murder.

Thanks for mentioning the Maxine Peake drama. I think I might have seen it as I recognise some of the story lines in Gentleman Jack.

I realised watching this episode that I think I have been unduly influence by pre series media hype and references to Anne Lister being predatory and the asides to camera sort of enforcing that.

Though it would seem that Ann Walker, an apparent innocent to any sort of intimacy let alone with another women, was more than aware of what might be possible.

I wonder if I would see her as being predatory without the current day comments about her ie based on their interpretation of her diaries.

Maybe she kept them, not as a sexual predator, but as part of her pursuit of knowledge. Its not as thought she could pop down to the local library for a guide to lesbianism, or google a youtube instruction video!

And I do NOT like how she treats her sister who seems to not only put up with Anne's arrogance but do all the tedious work around the house so that Anne can stride around in her long black coat.

And now Marian has gone off in a huff so no one will challenge Anne's firmly held belief in her own superiority!

Thanks to all for the answer! I hope the lad gets away with it, although it has put me off bacon for a while.

LoafofSellotape · 04/06/2019 07:23

The pigs will finish him off completely, there'll be nothing left.

Pebble21uk · 04/06/2019 08:51

I'm really enjoying this - and I think it's style, including comedy and removal of 4th wall etc all work to enhance it. I'm not usually a fan of Suranne Jones but she's perfect in this.

As a gay woman of a certain age it's so bloody refreshing to see a lesbian 'romp' that is unapologetic, on prime time TV and isn't about angst and the emotional toll of realisation and coming out. Her status as a lesbian is already a given and the story has many more facets to it.

Needless to say I have watched my fair number of lesbian dramas. I remember so looking forward to the adapatation of Tipping The Velvet, having read the book... but it was such a disappointment. That was really miscast. I really rate Keeley Hawes in most of her roles but she was totally wrong for that.

Very pleased to hear that a second series has already been commissioned.

legolimb · 04/06/2019 12:53

I am enjoying this so far.

I'm quite local too so it's interesting to watch some of the scenes.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 04/06/2019 13:10

It the pigs won’t eat bones will they?? So glad I’m vegetarian.

LoafofSellotape · 04/06/2019 13:18

Pigs eat everything.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 04/06/2019 13:20

Even bones?

LoafofSellotape · 04/06/2019 13:41

They eat eveeything if they're hungry.

LoafofSellotape · 04/06/2019 13:42

**Everything

MorrisZapp · 04/06/2019 15:08

Omg wash your mouth! Tipping the Velvet was absolutely superb! Lifetime top ten. Loved every single moment (and the inevitable pisstakes too, Dawn French doing the deep voice thing was hilare)

unique1986 · 04/06/2019 15:15

Haha I loved Tipping The Velvet.
Shame this isnt quite so gritty..

Apologies to the Tipping fans!! I think my problem with Sarah Waters' adaptations is that I have read the books first and the TV dramas never seem to match them somehow, or perhaps my idea of her characters.

I haven't read the Diaries of Anne Lister, so I'm not drawing any comparisons this time. I do think it's far more watchable and entertaining than the Maxine Peake version (another actor I normally rate very highly)... but I guess that's just me... again! Grin Whereas normally I can totally take or leave Suranne's work (mostly leave!)

DobbyTheHouseElk · 04/06/2019 16:24

Ok, that’s me never eating pork again.

howwudufeel · 04/06/2019 17:25

I don’t think pigs eat abusive fathers much these days Dobbie Smile

DobbyTheHouseElk · 04/06/2019 18:00

I’m vegetarian, so don’t plan on eating pork any day, but I’m extra glad.

Chilledout11 · 04/06/2019 18:30

Great to hear there is another series. Just loving the drama. Felt a bit sick at the murder scene and pigs but he was a horrible brute and times were different then.

LoafofSellotape · 04/06/2019 19:14

Is TTV worth watching then? I missed it when it was on.

desperatehousewife21 · 04/06/2019 19:20

I like tipping the velvet purely because the first opening scenes are set in my hometown Smile

BitOfFun · 04/06/2019 19:45

Absolutely worth watching, yes. I have quite a crush on Keeley Hawes.
