GoT is actually disgusting, isn't it?

In what way can it be described as 'entertainment'?

I seriously, don't understand why people happily sit down to watch the carnage, the immolation, the screaming children.

What is wrong with people?

Soft porn for teens. Ffs do people actually listen to themselves 🙄

Bellatrix14 · 13/05/2019 22:44

There’s generally lots of screaming, burning people actually, not just children. While we’re being hysterical we should also be factually accurate and not give fictitious children all the credit for being fictitious dragon bbq.

Also, the sexual violence is not supposed to be entertaining? It’s included within the narrative of an adult programme which is set in a faux medieval world in which violence is common, as is sexual violence? If you want to only watch programmes which avoid violence, sexual violence and bad things happening to under 18s then fine, but you’ve got a lot more to avoid than GoT.

MenstruatorExtraordinaire · 13/05/2019 22:47

I always felt a bit grubby after watching it.

Gave up at season 5. CBA to plough through any more.

Each to their own.

strawberrypenguin · 13/05/2019 22:49

Well you must have watched it to know that OP. There are plenty of violent programs on TV, many more realistic than the fantasy world this is set in.

Zurisee · 13/05/2019 22:50

I actually agree with OP to some extent and it’s something I’ve been thinking about for a long time now.

It’s interesting that many of these responses in defence of shows like GOT have said they like it for the other aspects of the show - the storytelling and the characters etc. So what does the gratuitous violence actually bring? Does it enrich the storytelling? Or do people just enjoy watching violent scenes?

These are philosophical questions, there isn’t a right or wrong answer. I don’t think it’s fair to jump on OP in a bullying manner because she insulted a TV show you like, it’s actually an interesting discussion and I wish we could debate this stuff without the petty comments.

Personally I do feel uneasy about how much us humans seem to enjoy watching other people suffering, even if it’s not real. I know that people like horror. I just don’t think there is anything good about watching a realistic depiction of a woman being raped, a person being tortured horrifically, a baby being murdered, etc. It does feel wrong to me.

I do have an open mind so I’m genuinely interested to hear a defence of it though: how can a morally good person enjoy watching morally deplorable acts and extreme suffering? Why do people like going to torture museums? Why do people love reading about serial killers? Why are we so drawn to violence and tragedy? Should we not, as modern civilised people, turn away from this form of entertainment, stop desensiting ourselves to violence? I don’t know all the right answers but I find it fascinating.

I also find that after having had children I have a decreased tolerance for violent and horrific imagery and I am drawn toward preserving innocence - my own as well as my children.

Karwomannghia · 13/05/2019 22:51

I meant magic comma tits but surely there have been some magic tits?

MenstruatorExtraordinaire · 13/05/2019 22:52

Zurisee spot on. Great post.

LoafofSellotape · 13/05/2019 22:55

I just think it's beyond boring, I persevered until season 3 and it was liberating giving up and going off to do something else while dh was glued to it!

Rachie1973 · 13/05/2019 22:56

Lol. I am amused.

I’m not a fan but I’m curious as to what is acceptable viewing.

hellenbackagen · 13/05/2019 22:56

I will never agree with censorship In film, music, Tv or anything.

We are adults. We can decide what we see, hear , it's a personal prerogative.

No one should be able to dictate what another adult can hear or watch.

hellenbackagen · 13/05/2019 22:57

Makes me laugh....get big brother watch on this one eh?

Miljah · 13/05/2019 22:58

I said I'd gone. I sort of have, but waiting on the shower after DH! Sitting in bed.

Thank you, Zurisee for their eloquence. It's pretty much what I have, apparently, seeing my replies, failed to say.

And I quote : "how can a morally good person enjoy watching morally deplorable acts and extreme suffering? Why do people like going to torture museums? Why do people love reading about serial killers? Why are we so drawn to violence and tragedy? Should we not, as modern civilised people, turn away from this form of entertainment, stop desensiting ourselves to violence?"

I would like to see the response from the 'OP, she a Troll!' brigade.

There is no accounting for taste but I cannot believe that pp have compared game of thrones to Shakespeare. Shakespeare! Personally I think it's shite.

Karwomannghia · 13/05/2019 22:58

Well apart from film of real rape, murder, child abuse etc. I presume? People aren’t so great at managing their own viewing it seems.

SpeedyBojangles · 13/05/2019 22:59

You don't like it OP. We get it. And understand.

What I don't understand is why you feel the need to demonise people who do like it (and there are a fair few of us). People like different things. I am not at all phased by gore and violence. And, perhaps surprisingly to you, I've never felt the need to jump atop my dragon and burn a city to the ground Hmm

Karwomannghia · 13/05/2019 23:00

I sent a complaint to the BBC about the themes and violence on Eastenders so I’m really into censorship I guess. You don’t know who is watching something that is not appropriate for them.

SoupDragon · 13/05/2019 23:01

So what does the gratuitous violence actually bring?

This is what I wondered when reading the first book. There was no need to go into quite so much detail when alluding to it would have sufficed. I would love to have read the whole saga as the story seemed my sort of thing but the violence was far too much for me to want to continue reading

ShakeTheDisease · 13/05/2019 23:03

Ah, you're one of those HCPs, who think that medical knowledge means they know about everything else too and have the expertise to talk about all of it in a patronising way. You're not actually here to discuss anything because you already know you're right.

derxa · 13/05/2019 23:04

Genuinely thinking this is a troll - surely nobody actually thinks like this?! No I genuinely think like this. It's vile. It taps into the Roman bloodsports thinking.

Miljah · 13/05/2019 23:06

hellen- with respect, you're wrong.

No teenage girl expected to do anal with her boyfriend in 1980.

Lack of barring and/or censorship means that now, they need to 'consider it'.

A civilised society needs to have the ability to put some sort of censorship on what it easily view-able.

Believe me, if 'Big Brother' makes, for example, seeing endless pornhub anal not available to my teens, I'm OK with that.

Censorship is, and will ever be, a moving goal post. As it should be. But I am prepared to be a goal keeper for what I find 'acceptable'. Like the ability to freely watch gratuitous sexual and graphic violence to 'drive' a plot, on GoT. But.. the narrative !! etc.

No.

I couldn't care less for GoT but this thread is hysterical.

Miljah · 13/05/2019 23:09

hellen- um- this is about GoT.

OP posts:
pazwaz70 · 13/05/2019 23:09
