GoT is actually disgusting, isn't it?

In what way can it be described as 'entertainment'?

I seriously, don't understand why people happily sit down to watch the carnage, the immolation, the screaming children.

What is wrong with people?

OP posts:
Italiangreyhound · 14/05/2019 00:00

Lockheart Greek tragedies did not show the violence on stage, I believe. (Not that I waa alive then!)

M3lon · 14/05/2019 00:01

People who enjoy watching GOT either can't empathise with the characters (in which case why watch the fucking shite), or are desensitised to violence against characters they do empathise with.

Either way they aren't people I really want to be around.

Allhailthesun · 14/05/2019 00:02

BertrandRussell Agree

And to everyone that says ‘ it’s not real” Yep, some twatty bloke has have burned people, tortured children and all the rest in this world. So for them....it’s not entertaining.

Lockheart · 14/05/2019 00:02

Not shown on stage, @italiangreyhound but there are some pretty vivid descriptions in the literature.

M3lon · 14/05/2019 00:03

lock how do I know who is evil? Well people who enjoy watching evil being done (even in a simulated reality) is one of the first places I'd be looking.

Italiangreyhound · 14/05/2019 00:05

Lockheart I think hearing it described (read about) and watching it be acted out are quite different.

Lockheart · 14/05/2019 00:06

@M3lon are you suggesting that someone who enjoys reading things like the Greek tragedies (and all the accompanying gore, rape, incest, and murder) is evil? If not, why not?

CrinolineQueen · 14/05/2019 00:07

So people who watch GoT are evil.

Gosh, the hysteria from you and the remarkably similarly toned OP is quite something.

Lockheart · 14/05/2019 00:07

@italiangreyhound why though? What's the difference between watching on a screen and watching in your imagination?

M3lon · 14/05/2019 00:07

I'm not sure what the point of arguing that enjoying violence, the watching of violence and the watching of simulated violence has aways been a part of human culture actually is?

Rape of women has also always been a part of human culture..but I'm kinda hoping we will eventually grow out of it.

M3lon · 14/05/2019 00:08

And yes, Lock, anyone wanking off over incest and rape in a greek tragedy is every bit as disturbed.

HPLikecraft · 14/05/2019 00:10

Yes, Characters. Characters are not real people. They’re imaginary. That’s why their deaths are not such a huge deal.
Real people dying horribly? Not the same thing at all. That is a huge deal.

That said, I’ll be sobbing if Tyrion dies, assuming he didn’t last episode... haven’t seen it yet!

TheGoalIsToStayOutOfTheHole · 14/05/2019 00:11

But... I really havnt enjoyed this season of GOT. I loved the politics, the sneaky plays, the backstabbing, the history of a fantasy world. I was hoping we'd get back to more of that once the night king was gone, but it's just been gore and violence with no substance.

I agree with this. I have been so disappointed with this series after looking forwards to it for so long. I think it really shows that its no longer GRRMs writing, asthe main thing I liked in earlier seasons was how..even main characters could be offed for bad decisions. How unpredictable it was. This series has been such a letdown for me, such lazy writing. I refuse to believe this is the ending GRRM saw for it all. If he ever finishes the book, we will find out..books are much better than the series for me, but thats generally the case I think as you can put in so much more detail

M3lon · 14/05/2019 00:11

Not necessarily evil...but not exactly empathetic either.

Rachie1973 · 14/05/2019 00:13

Lol my DH loves the show. Is he evil? Only his farts.

We’ve fostered. Someone call SS!

Lockheart · 14/05/2019 00:13

Because @M3lon, as I have explained, these sorts of gory horrible stories are a cornerstone of our cultural history. Indeed they're probably the vast bulk of it. Consider what our primary religions are based on, for example.

Now, if we take your premise that people who enjoy those stories are evil, that means one of two things: either we should censor one hell of a lot of our culture and history (and I'd argue that's impossible and irresponsible), or the human race is inherently evil (which would be an interesting debate, but perhaps not one for 12:10 at night).

Personally I think neither of those are true. I think it's very possible to appreciate something like GoT / Saving Private Ryan / Saw and not be an evil person, even if they're not my cup of tea.

Lockheart · 14/05/2019 00:14

@M3lon you're being ridiculous now. Who said anything about wanking off over anything?

Annoyedbythemickeymousedebate · 14/05/2019 00:16

A civilised society needs to have the ability to putsomesort of censorship on what it easily view-able.

OP, you know embarrassingly little about the media. Heard of Ofcom? Plenty of people, including me, have pointed out that you don't understand what public access television is, and haven't worked out that viewers need to be paying subscribers to watch the show. So stop going on about things like 'desensitisation' as if you have any idea what you're talking about. You don't.

M3lon · 14/05/2019 00:17

HPL nah - I still don't get it. If you don't care about the characters then why watch it?

If you do then, you are at least in part buying into the story, in which case why are you happy to see people being burned alive?

You know this happened to me watching the first series of Spooks. It was all good fun and vaguely thrilling...then a character you've watched most of the series gets her head shoved in a deep fat frier. I honestly nearly vomited on the spot. I felt deeply shocked and horrified - and more than a little betrayed by the script writers. Needless to say I didn't watch any more Spooks.

You are supposed to care...but then it isn't supposed to be fun watching people die - you can't have it both ways.

Rachie1973 · 14/05/2019 00:19

That’s the only episode of Spooks I’ve ever seen. I’m not a watcher but every time it came on my TV it was the same damned episode.

AuntieMarys · 14/05/2019 00:20

Well I love it. I am 59 and think it is great.

OkPedro · 14/05/2019 00:21

op isn’t the only piss taker on this thread
Sexual violence isn’t the main theme on GOT..The throne is the main theme.. the clue is in the title.
I’ve never watched it for the gore, violence or sex. I love the story as do most people who have watched it from the beginning.

M3lon · 14/05/2019 00:22

lock I didn't say everyone who enjoys GOT is evil. Of course they aren't. What I said is that if I were to go looking for evil in the world I'd start with those who really seem to enjoy watching gratuitous violence. Or possibly those who so heavily defend the fact that its definitely OKAY to really enjoy watching gratuitous violence.

Most people who get off on watching simulated rapes won't actual rape. But almost all those who do rape very much enjoy watching simulated rape.

So anyone running around yelling about how its definitely 100% okay to really enjoy watching a great deal of very violent simulated rape and it doesn't mean anything at all, is going to be at least a little suspicious in my book.

whatwouldbigfatfannydo · 14/05/2019 00:23

So glad we have been enlightened!! Thankfully OP has helped me understand that anyone who watches violent fantasy programmes are the scum of the earth and belong to the 7th circle of hell along side the sodomites (circa 1980 onwards)!!

OP, where would be be without you and your italicized, virtue signalling, pearl clutching, pro-censorship wisdom of the HCP kind???

Forever indebted Grin

P.S. Using your logic, does this mean that everyone who watches a film they know will make them cry is a horrible and irredeemable masochist??

M3lon · 14/05/2019 00:26

rachie I've not had that experience at least! I really loved all the spy stuff - I've no idea why they felt the need to add such an episode of utter horror to the mix. It really didn't need it.
