So, now we battle for King's Landing and the Throne.

The penultimate episode of this most epic of tales. Can Cersei survive? Will Euron catch on and wonder how Tyrion could have known of the pregnancy? Will Arya and the Hound beat Jaime in the race south?

As ever, no leaks or spoilers please until we watch the episode live together. Our Watch begins....

I enjoyed that episode. There wasn’t much dialogue but I think that leans to the total annihilation of the city. I doubt you really have time to chat when the whole place is going down.

I think Jon was ‘wtf’ the entire time.

I love LH I really felt her emotion when she and Jaimie found each other. Her ‘I’m just going to leave’ moment was the moment that she wasn’t the queen any more just a bog standard bystander in a complete cluster fuck

The hounds ‘fucking die!’

I’m trying to stay away from these threads as I’ve spent ten years watching this show and going to try and enjoy the rest!

I think Danny’s character change has been a little speedy but I think she was enraged after all that she has done and happened and she knew she still would never be the true leader of these people.

The preview of next weeks is such a contrast to Danny walking out in to the sunshine with her beloved armies in front of her always has such a positive vibe where as next weeks walk out to her army looks dark and despot.
I hope Lara doesn’t take the throne. I don’t think she has done enough.

Deep down im sceptical of the ending so trying to put my ride tinted specs on for the last one!

JasperRising · 13/05/2019 18:09

I am another one who whilst not anti mad queen Dany per se (family madness, single goal from childhood being replaced by realisation she is not adored in westeros, isolation at the banquet last week. Even Oleanna in season 7 reminding her she is a dragon and should behave like one) I am unconvinced by the speed of her change. Up until this season she has been concerned to avoid innocent death if she can, in episode 2 of this season she was making her speech to Jaimie about how she had been brought up to hate the Lannisters for their behaviour at the sack of Kings Landing and now she has behaved in the same way. It just feels too fast.

JasperRising · 13/05/2019 18:10

I like to think they are going to leave who is on the iron throne in the end as the biggest loose end and just not tell us! It would be infuriating but underline the pointlessness of all the violence and plotting...

fancynancyclancy · 13/05/2019 18:12

I think Dany was angry with the people of Westeros for not denouncing Cersai & I agree with the poster who said every time she follows the advice of others she loses.

SweetSummerchild · 13/05/2019 18:17

“A cloth dragon swayed on poles amidst a cheering crowd“ A Clash of Kings, Daenerys IV

I can foresee a scenario where Daenerys burns KL due to their support and love for fAegon in the books.

fancynancyclancy · 13/05/2019 18:19

I also think the rush is because the actors are in demand & likely want to do other projects, the widow is small.

Figgygal · 13/05/2019 18:21

I've been thinking most about Cersei not because I was being for her blood and wanted to see her die horribly but they'd taking her character too far to in the last few minutes try to humanise her and have you feel sorry for her
she would've been looking for a way to get out of there and then been furious that she couldn't not whimpering into Jaimes shoulder

Figgygal · 13/05/2019 18:21

Baying for her blood even

BrienneofTarthILoveYou · 13/05/2019 18:35

I loved that with Cersei actually @Figgygal - the relief she felt when she saw Jaime was tangible & given the shit going on all around her, she knew she was no longer Queen & it seemed fitting that she was grateful to see a friendly, loving face. I totally believed that of her.

Great comment on the Guardian blog that we should save our sympathy for the real victims: all the innocent girl babies who’ve been christened Khaleesi in the last eight years.

Grin

Have there been many Khaleesis in the UK I wonder?

itswinetime · 13/05/2019 19:12

The poor children Grin I guess we should also spare a thought for the charity shops about to be overwhelmed with mother of dragons clothing 😂

Andylion · 13/05/2019 19:12

I have been a half-hearted GoT watcher, just bingeing the last two seasons before this one, so my forgive my questions as there is so much I don't know, despite reading these threads on MN. They have been invaluable.

  1. If Jon was brought back from the dead for a purpose, why could that purpose not be to sit on the throne?
  1. He doesn't want to be king, but he might feel obligated to as he supported Dany, and look what she did? There would be a great *irony if, despite all the people who wanted the throne, the one who sits on it is a reluctant ruler.
  • no pun intended Grin
itswinetime · 13/05/2019 19:16

Jon could be inline for the throne but I think if he kills the queen who he supported in doing all that damage and loved he is mostly to either die while doing it or run of a indulge in heavy self loathing it's more in keeping with his character that way but that doesn't mean that's how it will happen.

BelfastBloke · 13/05/2019 19:16

That was the worst episode of the entire TV programme.

It's likely that this is GRRM's ultimate conclusion to the story; but there's no way he will handle it so ineptly in the books. Any of that could happen, fine, but it needs to handle characters, prophecies, history, with much more respect than last night's travesty.

I'm not saying the tv show is right it's definitely handled things very rushed and badly at times but I do wonder, GRRM is stuck he can't get his characters to where they end up in any kind of way let alone respecting history and prophecy. This his his story his imagination if he can't do it we are expecting quiet a lot for others to be able to.

His solution seems to be that if he can't end it the right way he just won't end it. And I can respect that. But I don't think the show runners had that choice they had to finish it, the network the public No way it was going to be left unfinished. They have to mirror as much as the know/can from GRRM's ending and do it in a set time frame and fixed budgets.

I wish certain things had been handled better/with more thought but I do think it's a bit of an impossible job!

MaddieElla · 13/05/2019 19:32

Loved it. Totally and utterly what game of thrones is all about and it delivered the wow moment I wanted. Dany heard those bells ring and got angry. She was going inflict justice on the lot of them for her dragons and for Missandei. Burn them all.

Cersei and Jamie. Wanted him to kill her but saw her face when she met him and immediately knew they'd die together.

Cottonwoolmouth · 13/05/2019 19:37

Get off this thread. Leave.

Oo sweet, I could see that being a possibility...!

I loved that moment, love Lena.

BlackCatSleeping · 13/05/2019 19:41

I disagree with a lot that has been said here.

I saw an interview with D&D and they said they knew that if they were to do everything they wanted to do in the final season, they would only be able to make 6 episodes. It definitely isn't down to being lazy and not being bothered. Quite the opposite. They are essentially making 6 movies rather than a TV show. That's huge! The production in this last season has been immense. They've been making ground-breaking TV.

Bran had a vision of a dragon shadow over KL and Dany had a vision of the destroyed throne room, so the destruction of KL has definitely been in the pipeline for a long time.

Every interview I have seen with the cast they have been overwhelmingly positive about the final season.

Of course the final episode will wrap up most of the characters storylines. I'm pretty sure we will hear from Sansa, Robin, Brienne, Tormund, Bronn, Yara and Ghost. I think Varys letters were to all of them to rally and fight for Jon.

I liked Jaime and Cersei's ending, I thought it was appropriate that they came into the world together and left together.

The actor who played Euron had such fun with his character. Jaime lost his sword hand. That's why Euron could defeat him. Bronn said that Jaime was easy to beat now.

I loved Arya's storyline this episode. She went from being the bad-ass who killed the NK to be almost killed with the common people. I can't wait to see what she does next. I agree she could be the one to kill the final dragon with her special weapon, but I have no idea. She's there to do something!

The whole theme of this season (the eire show) has been that you cannot rule through fear. Dany has always been an excellent conquerer, but not such an excellent ruler. She never managed to rule Mereen properly and was always on the outs there. Jon has always been able to lead. Tormund said that Jon could made an ally of his enemies and there is a lot of truth in that. Jon's power is in his ability to bring people together. Dany has never been able to do that.

I don't think Tyrion would make a good king. He was terrible when he was Hand to Joffrey. The people hated him. He hasn't been so great as Dany's Hand either. He is a perfect example of someone who is book smart, but he's not a popular person.

Anyway, I am ridiculously excited about the last episode next week, but also sad that it has to end.

Also, I don't think HBO has anything to worry about. I'm really excited about "His Dark Materials" and "Catherine the Great" coming this year. Plus there are GoT spin-offs in the works.

yumyumpoppycat · 13/05/2019 19:43

I think that was my least favourite episode of this series, but I can see how Dany had to totally destroy the city so there is no question that she is mad and that she needs to be stopped by Jon - I also suspect he will realise he needs to rule even though he doesn't want to, although I would prefer it if sansa ends up ruling if someone has to - possibly a democracy is the ending that is needed. I was irritated that varys said men have to rule or something on those lines. I think I secretly wanted the Disney ending with good queen Dany Blush

Arya and the hound ending was nice but could have been done a bit better I think, arya just kind of agreed very quickly then skipped off! Agree that they made sandor more visually attractive and heroic, not quite sure why! I knew someone would throw himself and his sibling off a tower - I just picked the wrong family Wink

I mostly liked the Lannister scenes and they were main highlights for me. I agree that the moment when cersei sees Jamie was brilliant and perfect, but possibly she should have been trying harder to escape the crypt. I liked the way Jamie said nothing matters but us - think it was a throwback to the first series? I quite like how cersei was gradually more alone like Dany - the army gave up on her quicker than she would have expected, but I feel that cersei has been wasted in this series though.

I am fine with Jamie trying to rescue Cersei etc and also with him feeling love for Brienne - my problem was that he was staying with Brienne until it seemed like Cersei was going to win and at that point he went back to her. It would have made a lot more sense to me if Jamie had left before he found out that cersei was in a strong position - it makes me feel really unclear what his motives were.

In a similar way I liked the Jamie and Tyrion scene but I don't know why Tyrion was so sure that cersei was going to be defeated.

Honeyroar · 13/05/2019 19:48

I think because Tyrion still absolutely believed in Danerys at that point.

MsMarvellous · 13/05/2019 19:51

I enjoyed that. Well maybe not enjoyed given the death of virtually everyone and many thousands of innocents.

I see how Dany ended up where she did. It's easy to stay calm when you're surrounded by people claiming there love for you. She came to a country where no one cares about her, already divided, entering winter and with no reason understanding. She had power in her dragons and no love. Jon won't do what she says, Tyrion and Varys have independent minds, and at the Battle of Winterfell she lost Jorah. Cersei killed her best friend. All she is left with is dragons, rage and tons of emotion. I am not surprised she snapped. Plus it's been foreshadowed for honks with all the talk of Targaryen madness and the mad king.

After all his faith I can see Tyrion sacrificing himself to allow Jon or Arya to take out Dany.

Maybe there will no iron throne and the kingdom will be ruled from winter fell by Sanasa and Jon will head north to be with Ghost and Tormund

Cersei dying with Jamie both being crushed under the weight of their seat of power I personally found fitting.

I cried for Sandor. Facing the fire to take out his brother after all of his history.

GarnierBBCream · 13/05/2019 19:52

Tyrion had the makings of a good lord in the books, but definitely not a king.
