I wonder if the ex is back in Steve's life as nothing more sinister than a plot device to illustrate his impotence?

Possibly, but as I said, they rarely feature characters' personal lives unless it's relevant to the plot. Plus, Sam's attempt to rekindle her romance with Steve was flagged up in the 'last episode' bit at the start of two episodes, so I've a feeling it may be significant.

Finally read through the threads!

I work with a former ACC. He absolutely loves the show. Every police officer I know is glued to it, and it’s made me realise how many police friends I have - but clearly it’s good enough that they can ignore what procedural nonsense it all is.

I’ve watched the whole thing again in the last couple of weeks and can therefore confidently say that I have no idea at all who H is. My only thoughts are:

  1. how really weird it is that the other names on Danny’s list appear to have been totally ignored. Why?
  2. this series has been much harder work than the others. I’m not good at ‘action’ stuff - I can’t keep track of who is meant to be who in darkly-lit car park scenes full of men. And frankly they bore me. I’ve had to use recaps to find out what’s actually happened in most episodes. I miss the plotting and procedural work from the earlier series. This is starting to feel like the later series of 24, when it was just one constant twist after another for the sake of it. Having said that, I’m sticking with it.
  3. Loved AMM. I want her to stay.
  4. Thanks for the theories, guys! Lots of food for thought.

Isit, that reminded me of this piece from yesterday's Guardian www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2019/may/03/it-keeps-us-hooked-police-have-their-say-on-line-of-duty

BoreOfWhabylon · 05/05/2019 14:07

I have a doom- feeling re Steve.

He's going to end up completely paralysed... or worse!

DarlingNikita · 05/05/2019 14:48

I have a similar feeling re Kate. For a while we were given vignettes of her newly picture-perfect home life, which in itself in LoD-land is a honking great foreshadowing; and then last week the cracks between her and her husband were starting to show...

GeorgeTheBleeder · 05/05/2019 14:55

I’m more inclined to think the domestic interludes do actually have plot significance. As a pp said - what had Kate been doing on the night she arrived home very late to a pissed off husband? Won’t it have been something crucial and revelatory regarding police business, not personal stuff? I’m really hoping we’ll find out from the wrapping-up flashbacks.

Isitmybathtimeyet · 05/05/2019 15:16

Wasn’t she just at work? Didn’t we see what she was up to at the time?

DarlingNikita · 05/05/2019 15:19

George, yes, I'm with Isit –wasn't it when she and Steve had been at the scene where they found Corbett/McLaverty?

GeorgeTheBleeder · 05/05/2019 15:35

Okay ... but there’s an element of tautology in showing the same fact twice, surely? Alternatively, perhaps the will to avoid another angry husband scene might prompt her to rush or skip some bit of procedure that proves crucial - or (given how little time is left) causes her to change a habit / take a shortcut on the route to work / whatever - that means she sees/discovers something terrifically important.

Isitmybathtimeyet · 05/05/2019 15:39

But as you say it’s not the same fact twice. Fact one, she’s at work doing something we find interesting to watch. Fact two, her husband is fed up with her late hours whereas a few episodes back they were all loved up. I assume the tensions in her marriage will be relevant at some point but I don’t think the drama in that scene was where she’d been.

pineapplebryanbrown · 05/05/2019 16:11

There is a small part of me that wants to get arrested just so i can bark "state your grounds!"

GeorgiaTrotmansParachute · 05/05/2019 16:19

No I don't think Kate's home life is particularly significant. Is just that it's been a running theme in each series to have a check-in with the state of Kate family life - her sacrifice on Ted's anti-corruption altar.

I did think that her latest house is a bit posh for a recently promoted DI and much swankier than the houses previously shown. But I suppose her DH could have money...

Hels20 · 05/05/2019 16:28

I agree GTParachute - I thought the same. Her house looks posh and quite expensive - considering she was living in a car in series 3....

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 05/05/2019 16:29

Just under 5 hours to go!

Gingefringe · 05/05/2019 16:56

Dam - my DH wants me to go to the cinema to see some Marvel film with him because he doesn't want to go on his own. I hate Marvel and I'll have to record LOD!

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 05/05/2019 17:10

Bury him under the patio, we won't tell.

HumptyNumptyNooNoo · 05/05/2019 17:13

I personally think H is actually Kate's husband.

CraicMammy · 05/05/2019 17:13

LTB

DarlingNikita · 05/05/2019 17:22

George, I don't think I buy your first point, but I agree with the second, that perhaps she'll have turned out to have rushed home/skipped a crucial bit of procedure/taken a different route.

IcedPurple · 05/05/2019 17:26

@ HumptyNumptyNooNoo

I think that would be pushing it, even by LOD standards. Do we even know Kate's husband's name or what his job is? I could see 'H' being a relatively minor character, but not someone we don't know at all.

I still think Sam is suspect, not as 'H' - surely she's too young? - but she's up to something dodgy I reckon.

Bookworm4 · 05/05/2019 17:28

Kate's DH is Mark Fleming
I don't think we will get a big reveal regards H, I think it'll be a death.

IcedPurple · 05/05/2019 17:39

@Bookworm4

Possibly true. We've gone 5 seasons without the death of a major character (other than a 'baddie') which is quite unusual for a series like this. If not that, given that at least one more series has been commissioned, it's possible the whole 'H' question might not be resolved tonight.

storminabuttercup · 05/05/2019 17:44

I think tonight will be about proving ted isn’t h.
Btw do we know what happened to Ryan? Did he get arrested last episode?

IcedPurple · 05/05/2019 17:45

Ryan did not get arrested. We heard him talking to Lisa about how he'd recently passed some exams. How much do we bet he's going to join the police force and become the next Caddy?

NowWeAreSuckingDiesel · 05/05/2019 17:46

If it's a flipping cliff game, so help me God
