It was a good ending, and the right one. He was too vulnerable to happily give up his life for love. How is any man for her going to live up to the memory and perfect moments they had though?

Perhaps he could have become a vicar instead. Some priests do marry but I think they have to be married first.

I think it could easily go on to a third series, despite what the actor who played Claire said.

HotPriest · 08/04/2019 12:24

Just going to watch it for a second time with subtitles turned on looking for bits I didn't spot first time around.

I haven't seen it yet as I'm at work all day. I don't know if I can bring myself to watch it. What has happened to me? I've never cared about two people getting a fictional happy ever after before.

ninja · 08/04/2019 12:30

Lots of tears here too.

Martin's speech was genius and I was almost sucked in to feeling sorry for him - but he told her how she felt which just confirmed what a dick he was (it's happened to me).

It was the right ending but does that mean HP's speech was about God rather than FB

I'm wondering (and have before) whether what her dad said about her Mum is implying her mum was a difficult character?

No Boo, so we have to assume her memories really are what happened.

Definitely a more human side to her Godmother,

LucheroTena · 08/04/2019 12:31

It was a bit Thorn Birds wasn’t it? Although I think Ralph De Bricassart’s struggles were more with his overwhelming ambition to move high up in the Catholic Church. HPs was with giving up intimate relationships and the loneliness. I can’t see him staying a priest. I hope he’d in time leave, become a vicar, marry FB. The end.

howmanyleftfeet · 08/04/2019 12:34

Nah - she's after his money! She couldn't even remember his name FFS!

howmanyleftfeet · 08/04/2019 12:35

How is any man for her going to live up to the memory and perfect moments they had though?

If there was a third series, she'd struggle with that for years- then meet someone and fate would bring the priest back into her life.

Ilooklikeapencil · 08/04/2019 12:36

Oh. Gulp. Watched twice already, tears both times. Just so perfect, in every way. So many wonderful bits, where do I start?

The80sweregreat · 08/04/2019 12:42

I wondered what the deaf man was 'saying' as well!

It was good that she didnt use the fourth wall at the end to speak.

Very poignant but the right outcome really, he would never have been happy giving up God for her as much as he may have wanted to.
He had to make a choice. still sad though.

hopefullybettersoon · 08/04/2019 12:43

The tears running down his face when he said 'I love you too' at the end 😭😭😭

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 08/04/2019 12:43

Lovely.
I'm not sure what I was expecting but this was perfect.
The shaking of her head at the end.... "NO, there's definitely not going to be a third series"

I hope Claire and Klare live happily ever after. Though I couldn't understand why Claire kept asking Martin to leave her - why couldn't she leave HIM?

carrie74 · 08/04/2019 12:43

Oh that was just wonderful. What an amazing talent PWB is.

maeb · 08/04/2019 12:43

But HP was so happy and giddy (and their pre-wedding kiss!). Why would he leave that?

The80sweregreat · 08/04/2019 12:46

Claire may just feel better about being the jilted one? would make it okay then to chase after the other man? i am sad she did go on her knees, but maybe it was the only way to stop everything? to make him realise she was serious about breaking up and wont take him back again?
Dont know really - she is a complex character!

YippieKayakOtherBuckets · 08/04/2019 12:47

all I can say is the ending was predictable

I couldn’t disagree more.

I have spent WAY too much time this week reading theories and predictions. I thought I’d ruined it for myself when I accidentally read a tweet by someone who confidently claimed as a spoiler rather than a prediction that FB was going to be killed by Martin in a drunken rage.

I didn’t see a single prediction which got it entirely right. The one thing that everyone was expecting was massive drama and it was so beautifully underplayed instead.

The80sweregreat · 08/04/2019 12:50

It was underplayed, even evil step mum didnt want a fight this time around. Claire was outspoken for a change instead of FB.
The statue at the end made me cry though - plus the bus being cancelled. Sending the fox his way was funny though - she still has the upper hand and will get through her heartache! she has learnt a lot about herself and thats always a good thing.

RuffleCrow · 08/04/2019 12:51

Phoebe Waller Bridge, you've just broken my fucking heart SadGinWine

The80sweregreat · 08/04/2019 12:53

ruffle, i know what you mean! still, she will be okay ,. honestly!
Not sure about him, but she will move on and meet someone worthy of that smile.

Vertigoo · 08/04/2019 13:00

OMG, my heart is aching! 😭

I think FB has a deep-rooted need to chase and chase love due to her father essentially rejecting her. He says she’s very much like her mum and it’s no coincidence that he chooses FB to walk him down the aisle, clinging onto her/she symbolises his last minute resistance to letting go of his past life.

The passion, rawness, and insanity of FB comes from her mum, as her dad pointed out in the attic scene. Also, when he made the joke about liking Claire - just not FB, her face crumpled. He doesn’t seem to understand that those little comments to FB presumably throughout her life will have left a profound message that she doesn’t meet his approval.

I am WAY too invested in analysing FB! Grin

Vertigoo · 08/04/2019 13:03

I hope Claire and Klare live happily ever after. Though I couldn't understand why Claire kept asking Martin to leave her - why couldn't she leave HIM?

I think it’s because it takes two to end a relationship. She had already left and was begging him to leave too otherwise she’d having a fucking miserable rest of her life with Martin not letting her go.

RuffleCrow · 08/04/2019 13:04

I know the80s. She doesn't need us any more. That's a good sign. She's learned that she can love and be loved (as her heartless dad pointed out).

hopefullybettersoon · 08/04/2019 13:17

Did the foxes symbolise anything? What do people think?

Vertigoo · 08/04/2019 13:20

I think the fox is a vixen and HP is scared of them like he’s scared of passionate women like FB...

RuffleCrow · 08/04/2019 13:30

In Eurpoean mythology foxes can symbolise intelligence, trickery or transformation (thank you Wikipedia!)

I'm going with that last one personally. I think they've both had a glimpse into another world and although it was painful it will probably change them both for the better. They're both still relatively young and have a lot of life ahead of them.

ADarkandStormyKnight · 08/04/2019 13:59

Perfect.

FB was in control and while she felt every moment of the day she came out on top. Her Dad and sister both facilitated by her to move on in their lives, past difficulties acknowledged and owned.

The priest - well a relationship would have made them both miserable but she was able to get there herself without being told what to do, and without loss of face.

Interesting parallel between FB being told to kneel by HP and Claire being told to kneel by Martin.
