Given we are only a week away from the final season, I thought we should have a shiny new thread to discuss the episodes as they are broadcast.

Anyone else going to be starting their watch at 2 am on Monday 15th?

I've watched the trailers and teasers dozens of times, and I am READY!

I have a theory that the Battle for Winterfell in Ep 3 will be lost, and they will have to move south, re assemble at Dragonstone or Kings Landing. After all, here are three episodes to fill after that!

Just watched it-great opening episode but where is Brienne?

She was standing with Sansa and the others at Winterfell when Jon and Dany arrive.

iamH · 16/04/2019 00:07

If I'm honest, I thought it was a little "MEH"
For only 6 episodes this series.
I just expected more

Notrusthere · 16/04/2019 08:10

I think there's more to the look that Drogon gives John than "stop groping my mum"

John now knows he's the true heir.
He's finding out things about Dany that he doesn't like - she killed Sam's family, she's making veiled threats to his "sister" Sansa. There's going to be more.

My money is on John killing Dany or trying to kill her and being killed by Drogon.

Also think it will be interesting to see who Arya sides with when it comes out that John is not her brother, because Sansa isn't going to like that shit. She will want to be queen in the North and John bending the knee means nothing anymore.

I think Arya will be torn but will side with Sansa....the lone wolf dies but the pack survives.

Lweji · 16/04/2019 08:20

I didn't think it was a threatening look. Just intense.

There's an imbalance here. There's the White King and there's Cersei.
Surely they won't do the battle with the White King first.
They'll either have to half loose a battle and go south for help, but it feels odd because there's something in Winterfell, or the White King will go straight south and it will be Cersei having to flee. I'd bet on the second.

SimonJT · 16/04/2019 08:29

I think it was Bran looking at Jon through Drogon.

agirlhasnonameX · 16/04/2019 08:59

Surely they won't do the battle with the White King first.
I think they will. Probably start next episode and the main battle will be episode 3. The last three episodes will be who takes the throne- if they don't need to go south to run from the walkers.

All they need to do is kill the Night King and the whole army is defeated, which seems like a bit of a cop out option to go down so hope the battle is immense.

I hoped the walkers would get to winterfell in the first episode, since there is only six was hoping it would all be action packed, but guess the reunions where important too.

This word his is definitely male, and it said the valonqar will wrap his hands.

In some languages possession is expressed as a gender neutral ending of the object. So instead of saying his hands, you would say hands that belong to the subject of this sentence.
Devil's advocate here Wink

agirlhasnonameX · 16/04/2019 09:01

So just younger sibling, rather than little brother. Wasn't that what Missandei said about high Valyrian being "sexless"...?
The word for 'prince' was sexless in the azor ahai prophecy.

Springiscomingsoon · 16/04/2019 09:01

I was a bit disappointed with the first episode. Maybe looking forward to it too much! I thought Sam telling John who he really is could have been done better. Maybe with Ayra or Dany listening in the shadows? Great setting for it though.
It was all very predictable. Basically getting ready for battle.
I love the theory above that the knight king is going to Kings Landing first!

SweetSummerchild · 16/04/2019 09:05

If I'm honest, I thought it was a little "MEH"

It’s not a phrase I use very often, but that’s exactly what I said to my husband after I got up at 6:30 to watch it. There were so many events in the episode which just failed to deliver in my opinion.

As with season 7, the dialogue is really terrible. It’s pretty telling that the very first spoken lines of a season we have waited almost two years for were about Varys having no balls. It pretty much sums up what the script writers can do with Tyrion these days.

Ever since R+L=J became a thing about 20 YEARS ago, fans have been eagerly awaiting the moment when Jon embraced his inner Targ and rode a dragon. What was the amazing dialogue to accompany this? “Where do I hold on?”, “anywhere you can”. Great.

The reunions fell flat for the same reason. The Hound called Arya a bitch, Jon and Arya compared swords and Arya asked one of the most talented smiths in Westeros if he could make a spear! Honestly, this is the type of dialogue I would expect from a GCSE drama student.

I don’t think the actors are quite good enough to be able to overcome the awful scripts. Lena Headey does an admirable job, but Kit and Emilia just aren’t up to it.

I’m not just being a book snob here. There is plenty of show-only dialogue from earlier seasons which is leagues above this tripe - Theon’s conversation with Luwin about being a ward springs to mind.

Considering the gap between season 7 and 8, they could have done so much better.

agirlhasnonameX · 16/04/2019 09:05

I thought Sam telling John who he really is could have been done better.
I actually loved this bit. The last time Jon saw Ned he told him he would tell him about his mother next time they seen each other. And when Jon next sees Ned it's his grave in the crypts and he's standing in front of it when he finds out who his mother is Sad

TimeIhadaNameChange · 16/04/2019 09:40

I was a bit 'meh' on the whole. I loved it at the time, mostly, just because it was GoT, but thinking about it it could have been so much better.

Loved the nods to S1E1:

Lord Umber = Bran - we should have known he was in trouble from the opening scene of him running through the crowds. Bran ended up unable to move, so did he (attached to wall). Could the NK be a Lannister from this? (Don't really think so, but it's a thought).

King's arrival = Queen's arrival

And then to S1:
Bran with the girls referring to all the sex scenes. Especially Joff from later series - does the fact of how nice he was to them in comparison to J suggest he won't murder the brothers?

Ned was going to tell JS about his parentage - he finds out near Ned's statue

I do think it was too rushed, and too busy. I think they could have left the King's Landing scenes to the next episode, and kept all the action in the North. It was too box ticking - let's take the register, as it were. Brienne could have been mentioned, not seen, for example, and then brought back properly next time. I thought some things were rushed through, yet, despite that, it seemed very slow.

I didn't like the dragon-riding scene at all, though thinking about it it had a reason for being there. It showed JS Targ side, and I thought the look from the dragon was 'oh, look, another Targ' as much as jealousy / protectiveness.

I love the idea of another dragon. We have the four sigil's in the credits - maybe the heads of the four houses could ride them together: JS (on the ice one - he is dead, and a northman to boot), Gendry, Jaime and Sansa. I know only the Targs can ride them, but maybe that's just not true but no-one has tested out the theory?

Oblomov19 · 16/04/2019 09:48

Yeah. I thought it was all a bit disappointing. Afterwards, I thought: "Is That IT"?

Notmyrealname855 · 16/04/2019 10:36

Oh my god, I was so bored by the show I paused it to do errands, forgot about the pause and resumed a few hours later Blush

SweetSummerchild is so spot on, the dialogue is like the producers left the intern to have a go at it. I basically missed one big scene - the Arya and Jon reunion - because it was so dull. How?! How did they make that so boring and emotionless?

Another big scene - Jon and Sam in the crypts - just so blah. This was supposed to be the reveal of the whole thing, and it was fine I guess? Rushed, not notable for anything in particular.

It’s strange, feels as if the episode has been rushed to fit lots in and yet nothing feels particularly worthwhile. Even the dragon cgi stuff is meh - honestly I’d be happy to not watch the rest and just read about the ending! Grin

QueenOfTheAndals · 16/04/2019 12:53

I don't think that was Lord Umber @TimeIhadaNameChange, just a random child.

The dragon ride felt a bit like a Quidditch game at Hogwarts and the dialogue that followed was risible. "Warm your Queen" is up there with "hold me like you did by the lake on Naboo" from the Star Wars prequels.

Lweji · 16/04/2019 12:57

They did say it was the Umber boy, didn't they?

Lweji · 16/04/2019 12:58

ah, you mean at the start? Can't tell.

BentCoppersOnly · 16/04/2019 13:02

I enjoyed it and I am hoping that whilst it was a bit of a slow episode, it gets the necessary reunions out the way and establishes action for the next few episodes. The white walkers can’t be far away from winterfell now, and Jon will have to wrestle with the knowledge of his true heritage. He’s too honest a man not to say something, so I expect things will kick off fairly quickly.

Well at least I hope!

blancheduboiss · 16/04/2019 14:52

Agree on most part, really disappointing that GRRM still hasn’t managed to finish ‘The Winds Of Winter’ nearly 8 years on so the writers have some more dialogue to play with, but hey ho. Episode 3 will more than definitely be the long night battle - the death of Ned Umber shows the walkers are in the North now so seems likely. Expecting episode 5 to be the battle against the South. Daenerys is starting to become a hinderance and I am almost rooting for Jon to kill her (or Sansa Grin )

Springiscomingsoon · 16/04/2019 14:57

@agirlhasnonameX I did say it was a great setting to tell Jon - just think it could have been done better.
I agree with the dialogue comments.
Also on thronecast they confirmed the boy who died at the end was Ned Umber.

LunaMay · 16/04/2019 15:12

I love how this show has taken characters i hated and made me like them over the last few seasons, I want good endings for Jamie and Theon (haha yeah not likely) and Sansa has really grown on me.

I've never liked Dany and feel that's just going to get worse, i hope Sansa takes her out with Tyrions help.

I dont know what i was expecting from the reunion with Arya and the Hound but i was a bit dissapointed.

Am i the only one who thought Theon looked quite hot? Yes? Thought so.

Also i'm hoping Bronn doesn't follow through

Lweji · 16/04/2019 15:15

I was happy with the telling Jon part.
I was afraid that it would take forever or be interrupted or something. No need for lengthy complicated dialogue there, IMO.

But the dragon ride was taken too lightly and more romantic than significant. She should have been astounded that he was able to ride the dragon. And so should him and many other people.

blancheduboiss · 16/04/2019 15:21

I also agree Dany should have been shocked. Tyrion is the only one to have gotten remotely close to them, let alone bloody ride them. I’d have hoped he’d have rode Rhaegel during the battle and after he knew about his heritage.

SweetSummerchild · 16/04/2019 15:22

I think they’ve tried to write the Daenerys’ conversations with Jon in the manner of Ygritte’s - full of sarcasm, sass and a great deal of sexual tension. With Jon and Ygritte it just worked, but withe Jon and Deadpan Dany it just doesn’t.

Considering Jon/Dany is supposed to be the romance of the series it has just failed. If they decided to go their separate ways now and I don’t think a single viewer would feel disappointed.

Flaverings · 16/04/2019 15:48

I know that we're not supposed to have any happy endings or predictable story arcs, but I most regret...

  • Sansa not becoming a brilliantly astute leader at the Eyrie. Taught by the best manipulator Baelish but with the values of her parents.
  • Arya not becoming a deadly, skilled assassin, making her a valuable asset for whichever siblings survive.
  • Rickon not becoming a leader of the barbarians on whatever barbarian island he was supposed to be on
  • The direwolves not being far more significant players.
