How good does the trailer look!

So excited for 31 May Grin

I'm torn between rereading the book before or waiting until after

And the ‘Just William’ books the bookshop at the end was a fab touch.

So many Easter eggs really, I need to watch it all many times over.

Pascha · 04/06/2019 12:03

If anyone wants to download the book it's half price on amazon now.

SisyphusDad · 04/06/2019 12:35

Agree that missing out the Elvis line in the transport caff was a big disappointment.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 04/06/2019 14:22

I binge-watched it twice and loved it.

Look near the advert for Witchfinders, and game Death is playing in the greasy spoon and the notice on the bookshop door (hope these don't count as spoilers)

My favourite line was "Don't talk to me about the greater good - I'm the Archangel fucking Gabriel"

My favourite scene involved the gavotte . . .

First time round I thought there wasn't a single weak performance. Second time round I was disappointed by Shadwell's accent (not as bad as Dick van Dyke in Mary Poppins, though)

Absolutely loved Aziraphale, Crowley, Duke Hastur and Gabriel (who has violet eyes! ). And the interactions between angels and demons, demons and demons and angels and angels are brilliant.

I can see why they streamlined the novel, and why they've changed some things to make is more accessible/palatable to an America audience.

On the whole - excellent - and I hope that if they make another series it will be true to this one.

(Also, I loved the hellhound post-transformation - was it not a broken-coated Jack Russel?)

Look what I've got!!

Does anyone know what this prediction by Agnes Nutter; "Invest thy money in Master Jobbes's machine and good fortune will tend thy days." was in reference to please? I can't for the life of me figure it out.

Steve Jobs-Apple?

SpamChaudFroid · 04/06/2019 19:39

Aah, thank you!

Just been reminded of my favourite quote, something along the lines of, "Most books will tell you that witches practice their magic whilst naked. This is because most of these books are written by men". Grin

SchadenfreudePersonified · 04/06/2019 21:52

Nico

I only have two copies of this book. I obviously need a third!

bookworm14 · 04/06/2019 22:14

Shadwell’s accent is supposed to be dodgy - the book says that it basically roams around the uk.

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 04/06/2019 22:16

We are up to Episode 4. DS1 (12) and DS2 (10) are hooked and now worrying that it will all go wrong.

Just perfect so far. I re-read earlier this year and will re-read again after I have watched Episode 6.

GreasedPiglet · 04/06/2019 22:28

I know someone who speaks exactly like Shadwell 😂. He's Scottish, but I'm not sure which part of Scotland he's from.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 04/06/2019 22:49

Then I stand corrected Piglet and bookworm

It's just in the TV Series, as a young man he had a definite and pronounced Scottish accent, then by the time he was recruiting young Newt, it had "wandered" and I found it weird.

I still enjoyed the character though, and thought the actor was very good.

Great series.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 04/06/2019 23:10

I struggled to stop seeing him as Chuck McGill from Better Call Saul!

MsMarvellous · 05/06/2019 06:11

Finished it last night. Haven't read the book in a couple of years and purposely didn't before watching. I loved it. And now I'm going to read again then watch again 😂

SchadenfreudePersonified · 05/06/2019 14:55

Same here MsMarvellous

SchadenfreudePersonified · 05/06/2019 14:59

Also - the one thing I would have changed about the script (minor spoiler).

In the book, IIRC, when Madame Tracey proposes to Shadwell, he asks "How many . . . ?

And she hazards an answer without even being sure of the question "Er . . Two . . . ?"

It is the right answer.

In the series Shadwell openly asks "How many nipples?"

I think this takes away a great moment of humour. They should have left it the way it was - but never mind.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 05/06/2019 15:00

I wonder if David Tennant's demonic contact lenses were uncomfortable to wear?

MsMarvellous · 05/06/2019 15:53

@SchadenfreudePersonified probably. But I bet he was more than adequately compensated for his trouble

YogaDrone · 05/06/2019 16:42

I enjoyed the first three episodes but was less impressed with the last three.

They cut some of my favourite bits - Death and the other bikers of the Apocalypse on the trivia machine. Death in this adaptation wasn't the Death I imagined - he was too small (not just height but personality and presence) and appeared to have had a sense of humour bypass (apart from the "leaving early to avoid the rush" line all of his good one liners were cut). One of the best things about TP's death is his dry sense of humour so, as a result, I found him disappointing. Cutting the other four bikers was a sham too - I love them and their alternative apocalyptic names Grin

I thought Shadwell was pretty mild compared to the novel. TV Shadwell was laconic and logical whereas the one in the book was manic and, despite his horrible character traits, likeable.

I love Miranda Richardson and thought that her playing Madam Tracy was great casting but inept Shadwell meant that her part was diminished. I did enjoy the séance scene though Smile

I don't understand why NG spent 20 minutes on the "origin story" of the understanding between A and C. That could have been tied up in a couple of sentences. Crowley was really needy and I didn't see that David Tennant needed to do a Bill Nighy impression. Frankly a laconic David Tennant would have been better.

BUT, I loved Gabriel - he was a fab addition and my favourite line was also "Don't talk to me about the greater good - I'm the Archangel fucking Gabriel" Grin

I've watched it twice now - mainly because it was 15 rated and I wanted to watch before I let DS (11yo) watch it with me. Plus it was a good excuse to watch it twice! DS is going to read the book now - although he says he pretty much knows it word for word from me quoting it at him for the last decade!

I'd be interested in a sequel, particularly if it's centring Gabriel.

YogaDrone · 05/06/2019 16:45

I'm looking forward to Catch 22 now. All my Christmases have come at one with two of my all time favourite books being adapted for TV in the same year Grin

SmarmyMrMime · 05/06/2019 19:57

I loved it! I've realised it must be a couple of years since I read it as parts were hazy in my memory.

I've long since learned that film/ TV adaptations are disappointing compared to the power of the imagination and authors word, but this was realisticly about as good as they come. Fabulous casting.

I love the book anyway, but my copy is particularly special as I got it in a bookshop in China and actually took it through Tibet with me, so the Tibetan references have always been amusingly ironic to me Grin

SchadenfreudePersonified · 05/06/2019 20:38

I loved Duke Hastur as a character, too - like some filthy wino who'd slept in his urine-soaked clothes in a skip for months - and his putting his hand up to ask a question at Crowley's presentation - "What's a computer?"

(Also very taken with that little fat puppet thing voiced by Andy Hamilton - the scene where it was hauled into the bath . . . )

Not keen on Beelzebub - too cartoony for me.

But I did like that the Angels were just as self-serving and bullying as the Demons.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 05/06/2019 20:39

Death in this adaptation wasn't the Death I imagined

I also wanted a Terry Pratchett DEATH.

longwayoff · 05/06/2019 20:54

COMING FOR EACH OF US ONE DAY, schadenfreude. Hope there's kittensSmile
