I've thought that for a few weeks!! Duffy had 3 sons didn't she? Where have they been whilst Charlie's been running himself ragged?
It was very sad tonight, I really wish they'd let Charlie and Duffy be happy and in love and maybe go off into the sunset together. Sad

Squigean · 01/02/2020 23:09

Is Charlie supposed to be the same age? If Duffy worked for the NHS for 40 years (even though she didn't) the Charlie has been in longer.

Derek Thompson has been pushed to the brink with his acting skills recently.

Defenbaker · 01/02/2020 23:21

I had no idea the actor who plays Charlie is 71 - no wonder he's showing his age a bit.

Dementia is a growing problem for our elderly population and is even worse when it strikes younger people - the emotional and financial toll on the affected families is often devastating. It's easy to find plot holes in a long running drama series such as Casualty. Perhaps current writers aren't aware of every piece of back story to each character and details get overlooked, but I thought this storyline was handled quite sensitively and they certainly got the make up spot on with Duffy in the final scenes, when her complexion was so grey and she had a real deathly palour about her. Charlie did the right thing by her, in the end, when he accepted that further intervention was pointless and he let her go, even though he wasn't ready.

Optimist1 · 02/02/2020 00:20

Any idea why when Duffy was at the bus stop she was wearing black tights and the white cuffs on her dress, but when Charlie found her she had no tights/flesh coloured tights and no cuffs to be seen?

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 02/02/2020 00:21

I snivelled - even though Duffy and Charlie have been vaguely (more than vaguely, if I am honest) irritating for some time now. I did feel sorry for Robyn, though, and I thought the staff lining the corridor was a nice touch.

MaxPaddyandHarry · 02/02/2020 06:33

I don't watch Casualty, but saw the trailer several times (and have that song as an irritating earworm in my head). I heard that Derek Thompson is very highly paid, so why does he have such a limited range of gestures and facial expressions? I used to watch about 25 years ago and the trailer showed that he's nothing if not consistent.

I think at the bus stop, we saw Duffy how she thought she looked, in her head: perfectly turned out in her original nurse uniform, hair neatly put up, and so on. Then we see the scene where it flicks between her finding a young woman in the snow (her imagination) and her actually being in the snow herself, and we realise that she's actually not properly dressed at all; she's still in her slippers, and her hair is down.

Squigean · 02/02/2020 08:30

Yes that was my take on it too TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross, there was the blurry edge to these scenes to indicate this. Did the same as last week.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 02/02/2020 09:44

I was not expecting Duffy to die so was a bit shocked by last night's episode denouement. Very moving.

Optimist1 · 02/02/2020 09:52

Thanks, TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross - I'm obviously too literal to pick up on such subtleties, but your explanation makes perfect sense.

Susiesoap7 · 02/02/2020 11:04

Loved Charlie n Duffy! Casualty won't be the same without them but I have been watching it for a 100 years

I read on Wikipedia that Derek Thompson is Northern Irish! I wonder if he has an NI accent in real life? I've never seen him in anything other than Casualty or as himself.

Doggodogington · 02/02/2020 18:04

Now, how to get rid of Charlie...!
I was surprised though, thought they’d drag this in for a few more months. Glad they haven’t. Maybe he can disappear into the background for a bit so we don’t have to see his awful attempt at mourning.

Runkle · 02/02/2020 18:06

Charlie's acting was painful.

Optimist1 · 02/02/2020 18:30

Here's an idea, Doggogogington - when Charlie returns to work after taking compassionate leave, he addresses his colleagues to thank them for their support and speaks in an impassioned way about dementia and its effects. Little does he know, the CEO of a dementia charity is in Bay 1 being treated (for super-acute hearing?) and he recruits Charlie to join them and permanently tour the country to champion the cause?

MissEliza · 02/02/2020 22:16

I remember Duffy being a lovely character back in the old days and there being great chemistry between her and Charlie. Last night's episode actually made me mourn the Casualty of the good old days, with great storylines and characters.

polkadotpj · 02/02/2020 22:17

My husband's just said "Panto beckons Kathy"

Mumdiva99 · 02/02/2020 22:24

I've just finished watching. Well I cried. It's an end of an era. Although I also wondered where her kids were, and picked up on the point she hadn't worked for 40 years solid in the NHS. (I don't even think it could be 40 years.... I'm 45 and have been watching on and off since the beginning.... surely she would have been retired by now if it was 40 years.)

purpleme12 · 02/02/2020 22:37

I've been watching it for about 20 years (I think?) It'd be interesting to see the older episodes again.

GlitteryGracie · 03/02/2020 12:46

Perhaps current writers aren't aware of every piece of back story to each character and details get overlooked

If we can remember them then surely the actors that played them can???

Also, a quick read of the wiki page would sort it.
