Starts Tues 5th.

Looks like it’s set in the 1990s this time.

Thanks Feck - didn’t know that about soup kitchens.

... I am on a perpetual hunt for a good NI traybake recipe book - probably need to raid a Presbyterian library!

Loved it! I also survived many cross community retreats. We even had catholic NI school/Protestant NI school/Catholic RoI school/Protestant RoI school one. That was madness - we had two trips which increased the hype/potential for issues nicely. I remember a lot of weed being smoked...

Did anyone else go to Corrymeela? I went a few times 😂

isabellerossignol · 08/03/2019 21:47

I went to Corrymeela!

I loved that wee underground room, The Croi. (Is that spelt right?). It was a very calming sort of place.

Although I do have memories of enforced signing of 'Michael row the boat ashore, Hallelujah' in that room.

You can't beat a good Catholic sandwich.

Sugar sandwich anyone? Grin

AlecOrAlonzo · 09/03/2019 07:22

The big bowl thing was hilarious.

Michelle's ma is terrifying looking. I wouldn't be messing with her big bowl!

oldowlgirl · 09/03/2019 09:03

I don't get the big bowl thing - what's that about?

MrsJayy · 09/03/2019 10:27

Being told to keep something like the big bowl isn't the done thing and met with suspision (sp) like Mary it is a bit of a working class quirk and highly offensive as if mary couldn't afford her own big bowl OR is there something wrong with the big bowl. My mum is exactly the same

oldowlgirl · 09/03/2019 11:54

Thanks @MrsJayy , so not actually a catholic thing but more a working class, can't afford it type thing? (I'm Protestant working class though but maybe my mum just didn't borrow anything Grin)

MrsJayy · 09/03/2019 11:59

I think Michelles mum gave food in the big bowl and that is how the turmoil started Grin

lagerthaslovelyhair · 09/03/2019 12:01

I always thought that protestant was spelt with a 'd.'

ILoveMaxiBondi · 09/03/2019 12:17

I’ve been wracking my brain over what could be wrong with the big bowl! Grin

SrSteveOskowski · 10/03/2019 23:02

I'm (very lapsed) Catholic and my mother always kept the toaster in the press. Mind you, she's a bit anal. She'd put the kettle in there too if she could get away with it.

My toaster's on the worktop by the way.

SrSteveOskowski · 10/03/2019 23:03

Oh and a press is a cupboard by the way!

miaCara · 10/03/2019 23:18

I have NI roots and something thats always confused me is bread. My aunts would offer me a jammy piece ( bread with jam spread on it) . The bread was alway plain bread - baked with a thick crust top and bottom and sort of flaky on the sides .Sorry thats the best I can do to describe it as you cant get it in England.
Anyway. I was offered a jammy piece and than had to decide between a catholic side or a protestant side.I never actually got to the bottom of that as different aunts gave me different ends of the bread.

Derry girls is so funny. I bingewatched the first series in preparation for the 2nd series and laughed out loud several times. Love the Jo and Gerry interchanges. Jo sounds so like my Granda.

Cleebope2 · 12/03/2019 22:27

Sweet Jaysus, as an English teacher I think that’s my all time favourite episode. Ms de Brun, classic. Will be quoting lines from it fòr months to come. Thank you Lisa McGee!

RuggerHug · 13/03/2019 08:01

James in eyeliner!! And the Christmas cupboard.

Scary stuff when Sr Michael said you think you're my equal...that brought serious nun flashbacks!!

Absofruitly · 13/03/2019 10:46

Another great episode last night! Loved all the film references – 'Dead Poets' Society' and 'Usual Suspects' being the most obvious I guess. Takes me right back to my 90s teenager-hood. With this and 'Captain Marvel' in the cinema, I feel like all the 90s nostalgia, great tunes from the era and strong female leads are being written just for me - bravo, pop culture, I thank ye kindly!

mogtheexcellent · 13/03/2019 21:42

I'm confused by the lack of baby this series. Appreciate it didn't add much to the story but I like a bit of continuity.

MrsJayy · 13/03/2019 22:00

Watched it tonight the "deads poet society" photoGrin baby was in it last week Im unsure who the baby belongs too is it Mary or Orlas mums?

RuggerHug · 13/03/2019 22:40

Anna was in last week, she's Erins sister. I did wonder who was babysitting for Gerry and Mary's 'date night' since all the adults turned up with them😂

IsabelleSE19 · 13/03/2019 22:42

Maybe Erin was babysitting? Shock

MrsJayy · 13/03/2019 22:42

I think the kids were meant to be babysitting

oldowlgirl · 13/03/2019 22:51

I assumed Erin was babysitting but agree that I like continuity so good to see her / have her referenced Grin

RuggerHug · 13/03/2019 23:30

Yeah we half thought that since they were all over doing the poetry homework. Is it wrong that I'm in a WhatsApp group about this an we worked out the time based on Anna's age-ish in the high chair in episode one...😳

cushioncovers · 14/03/2019 08:11

Thought the cinema date night was fab Grin
