When is it back? I'm sure I read somewhere that it would be back in April. Does anyone have any theories about the storyline or characters?

The AC12 triumvirate comprising Hastings, Arnott and Fleming will definitely be back.

What about Roz Huntley? and her rather drippy DH ?

Wil Nige feature? and will we find out how and why Maneet was being blackmailed by Hilton?

I can't wait, frankly.

Really? I knew a devastatingly Irish Catholic Edward.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 02/04/2019 15:55

I know a brought up Catholic (but not Irish) Edward - lapsed now though.

TheSpottedZebra · 02/04/2019 15:57

a quick google My convent education tells me that there are multiple Saint Edwards - 2 of whom were English kings - Edward the Confessor and Edward the Martyr.

Am not from NI, but Scotland. 2 of my grandparents were from NI, and 2 from ROI. But it's the Gerard that stuck out! There has never been a Catholic called Gerard. This is fact that I have just made up.

PlayingGrownUp · 02/04/2019 16:00

Edward and Gerard are both very common catholic names where I live in NI (near where Adrian Dunbar is from) so defs sounds ok to me. It’s more the Hastings that sticks out as a not likely to be Catholic name but if a Catholic woman marries a non Catholic man the church doesn’t really mind so long as the children are raised Catholic so i assumes that happened somewhere in his history.

TheSpottedZebra · 02/04/2019 16:00

... not even the fact that a very quick google informs me of Saint Gerard Majella will disuade me.
NB he is patron saint of head boys, tennis football (?), and falsely accused people. INTERESTING.

greenpop21 · 02/04/2019 16:10

I went to Catholic school with a Gerard and an Edward. Hastings is not particularly Irish.

greenpop21 · 02/04/2019 16:10

Pronounced Gerud not GerARRD.

CaptainMyCaptain · 02/04/2019 16:11

In Angela's Ashes by Frank Mcourt (?) One of his little brothers who died was called Gérard I think.

greenpop21 · 02/04/2019 16:11

"Jesus Mary and Joseph!" made me laugh, my Irish Nan used to say that.

greenpop21 · 02/04/2019 16:13

but if a Catholic woman marries a non Catholic man the church doesn’t really mind so long as the children are raised Catholic so i assumes that happened somewhere in his history.

Yep, happened to me.

NoWordForFluffy · 02/04/2019 16:14

Hmmm, I was sure it was Spanish property (and we've only just watched all 4 previous series), though it may have been RoI. Either way, it wasn't gambling debts!

And my BiL is a (non-Irish) Catholic Edward, so they definitely exist. No idea about Gerard though!

TheSpottedZebra · 02/04/2019 16:17

Tinko why was Edward devastatingly Irish? Grin

Dear God, am I going to have to admit that I was wrong, or at the very most, not actually right, re the Catholic-name-ness of Edward Gerard Hastings?

Tinkoschminko · 02/04/2019 16:19

He just carried a lot of the stereotypical catholic frills and guilt.

BitOfFun · 02/04/2019 16:21

...falsely accused- ooooh!!

SaintEyning · 02/04/2019 18:20

Gerard is a super-catholic name (Gerry Adams...) and Edward is just a sort of nice semi religious name. If you’ve read Milkman by Anna Burns you will know all about our peculiar naming rules in NI...

wowfudge · 02/04/2019 18:26

He's a Catholic and a mason and, iirc, served with the RUC back in the day.

wowfudge · 02/04/2019 18:28

Sorry, not the RUC - he served in the army

Piggywaspushed · 02/04/2019 18:42

I am always bothered by the un Catholicness of Ted's name (didn't know about the Gerard bit mind). Having grown up in very sectarian Glasgow I never met an Eddie/ Ted of either persuasion. But I always assumed that that's Mercurio's lack of knowledge- or perhaps an afterthought to complexify an already named charcter. After all, Martin Compston is Scottish but it is necessary because of a small plot point int he first series that he has an Estuary English accent.

Martin Compston definitely a Catholic,by the by!

Is Jed Mercurio really a Gerard?

TheSpottedZebra · 02/04/2019 19:04

YES Piggy - in sectarian Scotland, he'd be seen as a Prod fo sho, based on name alone.

Jed Mercurio is a Gerald. I'd presumed that Gerry Adams was too, but he is a Gerard.
I think that Martin Compston is much hotter (than Arnott) with Scottish accent and without waistcoat.

greenpop21 · 02/04/2019 20:01

Martin Compton does a fab David Beckham impression with his voice.

greenpop21 · 02/04/2019 20:03

Father Ted anyone?

Wingedharpy · 02/04/2019 20:10

What are Catholic frills Tshinkominko?
Guilt I understand Smile but not frills.

Tinkoschminko · 02/04/2019 20:14

Mostly a love of James Joyce from what I remember 😀

Tinkoschminko · 02/04/2019 20:15

Does anyone else hear Martin Compston every time they hear Quasi on Octonauts?

Mrsjayy · 02/04/2019 20:24

Friend of a Dds met a drunk Martin compston (sp) at a musicfestival apparently he is a bit Don't you know who I am knob her friend was stewarding and had to be polite to him.
