Star Afternoon. Star
I love the Oscars, always have. Haven't seen another thread yet. Posting this for red carpet/fashion/ceremony twaddle. Hopefully some of you will join me later Wine
First show without a host since the Snow White debacle. Disney sued. For those of you interested in that, articles here:
www.lamag.com/longform/snow-job/
and here:

I think Glenn Close's Oscar is long-deserved. Wouldn't mind seeing Reg win for best supporting. Think Black Panther would be worthy enough for Best Film but not sure it will, it would have got a win in the best popular film until they binned the category. Interested whether the Guardian's doc will win and who wins best short. Is it Amy Adams's year finally? no And will Anita Dobson be watching Adam Lambert and Bryan May performing Bohemian Rhapsody on stage? Wine

I've only just found a working stream. What was all the awkwardness you were all referring to? Smile

RageAgainstTheVendingMachine · 25/02/2019 01:45

bizzey I am watching the ceremony live in English but from Germany (online on pro sieben via registering for free) but I suspect you might have to live in Germany as the tv license is mandatory for all households here.

IHeartKingThistle · 25/02/2019 01:46

Why didn't he get to speak? Is that standard?

RageAgainstTheVendingMachine · 25/02/2019 01:46

One of the speeches was being badly shared/read before being musiced off.

Is it just me or is she just yelling...something isn't right about the sound feed....

BartonHollow · 25/02/2019 01:48

The AA winners make an issue of it because for years they weren't in the room or even in the film unless they were playing a servant

Heck in some states they weren't allowed in the fucking cinema

It was a white mens club in which exceptionally talented white women were occasionally allowed to join

On that basis they can stress how important this is racially as much as they bloody well like IMO

On a lighter note :

Sam Smith celebrated at the podium being the first Out Gay to win an Oscar. He wasn't
And the actually first, Dustin Black tweeted him with 'and you should know that because you try it on with my husband enough" 😂👀Grin

CoachBombay · 25/02/2019 01:51

I wasn't referring to the winner saying it, I was referring to the voice over lady announcing it out. Like "look we gave a black woman an Oscar"

Sorry must not have typed it clearly. 🙈

BartonHollow · 25/02/2019 01:55

It's ok I was thinking of this low point in Oscars history

Loew's Grand Theater on Peachtree Street in Atlanta, Georgia was selected by the studio as the site for the Friday, December 15, 1939 premiere of Gone with the Wind. Studio head David Selznick asked that McDaniel be permitted to attend, but MGM advised him not to, because of Georgia's segregation laws. Clark Gable threatened to boycott the Atlanta premiere unless McDaniel were allowed to attend, but McDaniel convinced him to attend anyway.[15]

McDaniel received a plaque-style Oscar, approximately 5.5 inches (14 cm) by 6 inches (15 cm), the type awarded to all Best Supporting Actors and Actresses at that time.[26] She and her escort were required to sit at a segregated table for two at the far wall of the room; her white agent, William Meiklejohn, sat at the same table. The hotel had a strict no-blacks policy, but allowed McDaniel in as a favor.[27][28]

bizzey · 25/02/2019 01:56

@Rage thank you ..not in Germany ....will just follow this thread ...and hope i can guess the winners !!

RageAgainstTheVendingMachine · 25/02/2019 01:59

God yes, Sam Smith was cringe. Chris Rubery (monkseal - Glitterball strictly and DOI blogger) referred to it earlier this week: Congratulations to Sam Smith for being the first openly gay man ever to perform at the Brits. Grin

OP posts:
BartonHollow · 25/02/2019 02:00

Yes when I was still on Twitter used to tweet with Chris

CoachBombay · 25/02/2019 02:01

The USA and irta history and present day to do with race is fucked up. They are just backwards by about 50yeara still!!

Nice to see Bohemian Rhapsody won for sound. In the cinema it was a fantastic film to be immersed in the audio.

BartonHollow · 25/02/2019 02:02

I'm surprised to see it win though

First Man had it hands down I thought

Bo Rhap doing surprisingly well

GarethSouthgatesWaistcoat · 25/02/2019 02:03

Just pm'd you bizzey

RageAgainstTheVendingMachine · 25/02/2019 02:06

Aw sorry bizzey will Pro 7 not let you on? The guardian live blog is quite good.

I like Angela's dress

OP posts:
CoachBombay · 25/02/2019 02:06

Does that mean Roma is out for best picture you think??

RageAgainstTheVendingMachine · 25/02/2019 02:07

Well, it had to be Roma, didn't it?

OP posts:
BartonHollow · 25/02/2019 02:08

Not necessarily

It's believed that it could win both

I don't want it to so I'll be sad
And if Spike doesn't get Director I will fume

RageAgainstTheVendingMachine · 25/02/2019 02:08

Possibly coach though didn't it get baftas in both?

OP posts:
CoachBombay · 25/02/2019 02:11

Possibly then, I hope not though . I thought it was boring ,😂🙈

Mrs M's daisy nipple shields are interesting on her dress....

BartonHollow · 25/02/2019 02:13

Fucking shocking isn't it coach and people banging on making me feel like a philstine

Mind you felt the same about The Shape Of Water last year

Several far superior films esp Three Billboards

RageAgainstTheVendingMachine · 25/02/2019 02:13

I took younger DD to see Mary Poppins Returns last week. I fell asleep at Meryl Streep then woke up twenty minutes later...it was a long two hours. It reminded me of my mum who, when subjected to a musical, can ALWAYS be counted on to sigh heavily and say ''they're singing again!'' Grin
Bette Midler's voice has gone a bit now.
